annathepiper: Han Says NO (Han Says NO)

We’re being all yo-yo-y over here with the power going up and down and up and down and back up again. But now at least, we are again back.

For those of you who didn’t see my angelahighland.info post earlier, we got some rain in this afternoon. Things were fine until we heard a loud pop somewhere near our house, at which point our power went down. I got onto the PSE app on my phone and reported the outage.

Not long after that, a PSE truck showed up in our driveway with a couple of crew investigating. They told us a branch had come down on the lines near our house, which tripped the circuit, and they just needed to get a truck in that could reach it.

So we went ctrl-alt-fuckit and went out for dinner. Fortunately, while we were out, the power came back. Let’s see if we stay back up this time!

So it turned out that the predicted storm on Saturday was way, way less intense than the forecasters were saying. Enough that KOMO’s weather guy and Cliff Mass both posted embarrassed commentary along the lines of “yep, we pooched this one big time, sorry about that!”

From news articles I saw go up on Sunday, a lot of people took to Twitter to complain about this, particularly in re: how they got emergency supplies for nothing. To some degree I sympathize with that. It is annoying to be told by local officials “OH SHIT BIG STORM COMING IN EVERYBODY GET READY”, only to have that not actually happen.

But on the other hand, I also feel that this is actually the far preferable scenario. If the forecasters are going to fuck up a forecast, I would much rather have it be “far better than expected” rather than the other way around. Mr. Mass and his compatriots are getting shit for screwing this up, sure, but they’d be getting a lot more shit if they’d been all “okay, garden-variety storm coming in” and it turns out to be “OH SHIT WORST STORM IN 54 YEARS”.

And honestly, it ain’t like we aren’t going to have more storms. Those emergency supplies everybody went out and got? We’ll be using them sooner or later. Probably sooner, for those of us in Kenmore. The 2016 storm season has only just started and I am positive Kenmore will lose power at least once more before the end of the year. My house did in fact go out for about 11 hours, from Friday afternoon to just before 1am Saturday morning, even if we held steady on Saturday night. Other locations in Kenmore did go out during Saturday’s bluster, too, as I saw on the PSE Outage Map.

Mr. Mass’s last post did include some chagrined acknowledgement that while he did try to communicate that there was uncertainty in how the storm would play out, and that any little deviation in its track could dramatically change the impact on Seattle, he clearly didn’t communicate that well enough. So here’s hoping that he and his local weather colleagues can come up with a good game plan to make that happen next time we have a potential severe weather situation.

Because it never hurts to be aware of the worst case scenario, even if that worst case scenario never materializes. Better data about how probable that scenario will be, though, will help us all make the proper judgment calls on how we plan our responses.

So hang in there, Puget Sound area weather people! Many sympathies for the difficulties of your job! And hopefully this is the worst that the 2016 storm season will throw us.

Those of you who follow me on social media, or who saw the posts that went up on angelahighland.wordpress.com, LJ, and Dreamwidth last night, know we lost power around 2:30 yesterday afternoon. We were down all evening, but at least as of right now, we’re back.

How Are You?

How Are You?

Yesterday evening, we amused ourselves with playing around with instruments and with listening to one of the Big Finish audio adventures off my phone, piped through a Bluetooth speaker. The Cloisters of Terror turned out to be a delightful thing to listen to during a power outage! In no small part because Mr. Baker was in fine form in that story.

Here are the sorts of conversations we have in our house when the power is out!

Dara (while trying to figure out the chord progression for a song): OMG this chart doesn’t HAVE an A flat! They just skipped it!

Me (nodding sagely): ‘What damn fool would want to play an A flat chord on a bouzouki?’

And also:

Me: Okay good chiro has power. So I will go out tomorrow and bring back any necessary things. Be thinking about necessary things I can bring back.

Dara: Electricity! 4 buckets of electricity!

Paul: I think the fridge is going to need more than 4 buckets.

Dara: Okay, 6 buckets! Go to Costco.

George, bless his little kitty heart, kept wandering around mewing in a sort of “EVERYTHING IS DARK AND WEIRD AND QUIET WHY IS IT LIKE THIS AND WHY ARE YOU ALL IN THIS OTHER ROOM OH HEY THE FIRE IS ON YAY WARM”. And once we settled in to listen to the audio, George curled up in front of the fireplace to go zzzzzzzz.

I went to bed around 10:30ish and woke up just before 1am when the noise of the neighbors’ generators shut up. I sleepily realized the clock was blinking, checked the time on the phone (which I was keeping by our bed), and noted 12:54. So our power must have come back just a few minutes before that, long enough for neighbors to go YAY and turn their generators off.

Dara brought the servers back up this morning, and I scampered out to go to chiro and Safeway and the booze store (so that I could replenish the cake vodka and Baileys supply, and OH BY THE WAY YOU GUYS, I did find another bottle of Pumpkin Spice Baileys, which is an actual thing that exists and you should try it if those are words that sound like fun to you). Dara is heading out now that I’m home again, as the Norwescon concom has a meeting today, and they kinda can’t cancel it, because it’s at the hotel and they’re contractually obligated to use the rooms when they’re booked for. But she’s going to scamper back here ASAP when the meeting is done.

As of this writing Seattle City Light has a mere 11 customers out. Puget Sound Energy has 5,125 down still. And I gotta say, cranky as I am that PSE has been so random in our power service this year, their crews were out last night working their asses off. And that we got power back in the dead of night means their crews were out there in the wet dark, working for us. So kudos to them for that.

The current High Wind Warning is supposed to kick in at 3pm this afternoon and run until 2am, with the peak winds now expected between 5pm and 10pm. Cliff Mass has his current forecast up here, and from what he’s saying, the storm is still aiming for north of us, but we’ll be on the very edge of it. Seattle proper may dodge a bullet, but chances are high that Kenmore will get hit harder. And even if damaging winds don’t smack us, chances are VERY high we will lose power again, possibly for days. Expect that angelahighland.com will go down again, in which case I will continue to post updates on angelahighland.wordpress.com as well.

And given that the wind conditions yesterday still caused quite a lot of damage (note the gallery of pics on the Seattle Times’ updates here, PARTICULARLY the snapped power pole), I’m still expecting things to be very, very messy tonight and into tomorrow.

Brace for impact, Cascadians. Charge all your devices. Do your laundry while you still have power. Songda is COMING.

annathepiper: (Dib WTF)

Last night our power came back on, just after 11pm. So then I took the time to go back through my social media history, just to find all the various times where I’ve posted alerts about our power going down. This is what I found.

August 2015

Y’all may recall that last August we had an early season windstorm. That hit on the 29th, which caused us to lose power that morning. I posted at 9:37am that we were down, and again by 10:29am the following morning that we were back.

November 2015

Another windstorm. Outage start as reported by me was 2:35pm on the 17th, and we came back around 12:59pm on the 18th.

March 2016

We went down for a short time on the 12th, from roughly 2:43pm to 3:51pm. Cause unknown. What was particularly annoying was that this was even before the windstorm hit that month, so we were up pretty much just in time to go back down again.

Because we had another windstorm roll in on the 13th. We had a lot of flickery power that afternoon and evening until we finally went down around 9:25pm. We were back around 7:12am the following morning.

June 2016

Incident on the 19th that started around 12:52pm and ended around 5:05pm. Cause unknown.

Another incident on the 30th which, for once, didn’t actually impact our house. But it did impact 1,814 customers in Kenmore, and it impacted Dara anyway because the power went out while she was at the car wash. Which made it rather difficult for her to finish washing the Raptor.

July 2016

Outage on the 5th. I was not home at the time, and Dara warned me by text at 9:24am that we were out. Dara estimates we were down about four hours. Cause unknown.

August 2016

Outage on the 31st that impacted 2,194 customers in Kenmore. Duration from 10:27am to 2:01pm. Cause unknown.

September 2016

Last but not least, the latest incident. According to this article by the Seattle Times, this outage was caused by a tree falling on a power line in Redmond. The damage this falling tree caused then impacted four, count ’em, four substations and took out power for over 18,000 people.

I also saw this tweet from KOMO News:

However, this is the only source I have that mentions a brush fire, and I couldn’t find any article on komonews.com with more details. So I don’t know what their source for the “brush fire” report was.

Final tally

That’s a total of nine, count ’em, nine separate power incidents in just over a year. Seven in 2016 alone.

The windstorm-related ones I can forgive, ’cause, y’know, severe weather and all that. The rest, I’m crankier about. Because okay, yeah, sure, I’m not a civil engineer or an electrical engineer. But it seems to me that one tree falling shouldn’t take out power for 18,000 people.

And Seattle City Light, whose area of coverage also includes a lot of trees, somehow manages to not lose power SEVEN TIMES IN ONE YEAR.

Not that I’m bitter or anything no wait yes I AM bitter. Because Dara and I are paying Puget Sound Energy to provide us power. I think it’s a reasonable expectation for them to do their damn jobs and keep the lights on.

Dara’s already sent cranky mail to our state representatives and the Kenmore city council. I will be looking into doing the same. Because this is stupid.

And the only reason we don’t have a generator yet is money. We have to budget for it, given that we’re having to pay a great deal of money for roof renovation at MurkSouth this year, so the generator has to wait a little longer. But it’s important to note here that Dara and I are actually in an income bracket that can afford a generator. PSE’s coverage area includes a lot of affluent communities where a lot of the residents can say the same. But this is not universal. And if we couldn’t afford a generator at all, now or after budgeting for it, we’d be screwed.

I have to be grateful that not only can we afford to budget for a generator, neither of us have health issues that would be impacted by repeated incidents of power loss. But there must surely be customers in PSE’s coverage area that do have such issues. And this track record out of PSE puts those customers at risk.

But yeah, we’ll be budgeting for that generator as soon as the roof’s done and dealt with. And I’m going to look into setting up a minimal mirror site for angelahighland.com up on WordPress.com. After multiple incidents of power outages happening while I’m trying to run sales on my books, I need to have reliably stable places I can actually point ads at when I’m trying to encourage sales.

If anyone reading me is also in PSE’s coverage area, I encourage you to take the time to write up how many recent outage incidents have impacted you. Communicate it to your city councilpeople and our state reps. Because this is stupid. And it needs to stop.

So as previously mentioned I was scheduled to have a followup appointment with Dr. McMillan today. Went in for that, only later than expected, since her office called us literally as we were heading out the door and asked if we could come in for a 2:30 appointment instead. That was fine, I said, since we had other errands to run anyway.

Returned all the movies I'd rented at Hollywood Video, discovered that the Rite Aid had one but not both of my prescriptions (fortunately my thyroid meds don't run out until Thursday so I can still give 'em a day or two on that), got Vitamin C, mailed tax return and mortgages, went to U-district and returned movies to Scarecrow Video and also got contact lenses, and then headed over to Kirkland for the medical appointment.

Scarecrow sadly did not have Death Bed: The Bed That Eats back in yet. [livejournal.com profile] solarbird and I were bummed. The guy at the counter remembered us though and perkily offered an alternative: a movie about evil hair extensions! I was impressed by how readily he brought that up. I'm not sure if he was saving it specifically for us or not, but! Had we had time to get it, I totally would have rented it. As it stands, we'll have to check back again tomorrow and see if Death Bed came back.

On the way over to Kirkland we ran into a long line of cars moving at approximately five inches every six years. I initially blamed this on the spattering of snowflakes we'd started seeing in the U-district--'cause let's face it folks, local drivers are like that--but what was actually going on was an accident on the shoulder just as we were getting onto 405. Once we got past that though we almost immediately had to slow down again because OH HAI SURPRISE BLIZZARD.

It was stunning. Visibility dropped swiftly and Dara completely ran out of landmarks trying to find her way off of the highway to get to my surgeon's office. We made it okay, but still, snowflakes the size of quarters were amazing to look at.

The actual appointment was fine. Surgeon says I look fine and I told her I had been having fairly minimal and manageable pain, and that I'd even had a shower the night before. I've got a note to allow me to come back to work on Thursday and I'm supposed to come back in for another followup in two weeks. Meanwhile, I also now have a card with the ID number of the implant they've put in me. Apparently they have to track them. There's a number on the card, too, which raises all sorts of dubious questions about what exactly one would have to call in about re: matters of tech support.

(But in general even given that I'm still in recovery mode I'm already a lot more comfortable than I was with the saline balloon in. Overall I count this entire reconstruction process a win.)

And in other weather news, we have barely seen any further flakes in Kenmore and what little we did get this morning has melted. But today's winter weather advisory has been extended until 9pm so we'll see if we get anything else.
annathepiper: (Dib WTF)
So as y'all will have seen, I live-Tweeted Longest Night. I just got up a little while ago from the six hours or so I was able to sleep, and am feeling surprisingly alert.

And generally surprised. It's snowing. Again. The current Winter Storm Warning that just got issued says to expect an additional three to six inches.

This makes the third serious snow we've had so far in the barrage. The article the Times has up here says that Seattle got freezing rain early this morning, too, and they are telling people to say off the roads unless absolutely necessary due to the roads being in a state technically known as "fucked". Definitely the worst snow we've had since the Big Snow about ten years ago, the one that dumped 17 inches at MurkSouth and had people skiing in Ravenna Park.

I am very, very grateful I don't actually have to be anywhere; this is an excellent time to be on vacation. Also very grateful that [livejournal.com profile] spazzkat made it to Virginia and [livejournal.com profile] mamishka made it east as well before all this hit.
annathepiper: (Dib WTF)
Folks, yesterday's High Wind Watch is now upgraded to a High Wind Warning. Do what you need to to get ready for this today if at all possible.

The Times has an article up on the incoming mess here. The PI has an article here.

ETA 3:36pm: The wind warning seems to be focused on areas to the east of Seattle proper, so if you're in the Seattle metropolitan area, you'll probably miss most of the wind fun.

On the other hand? The Seattle metro area does have a Winter Storm Warning up.

They're also mentioning a potential ice storm for Tacoma and areas south, as this winter storm may turn to snow mixed with freezing rain in that area.

So basically, there'll be all sorts of suck going on with the weather this weekend, and what particular brand of suck you get is going to depend on where you are. I'd say, be prepared for just general unpleasantness.
annathepiper: (Dib WTF)
Oh geez, now we're also going to have high winds to deal with this weekend, too?

This is a High Wind Watch, people, talking about 50-70mph sustained winds and gusts up to 70-90mph. I strongly recommend keeping an eye on this. If it actually happens this sounds like it's going to be one of the most severe windstorms we've experienced for a while.

It doesn't look like Kenmore's going to be in the direct line of fire for this but we will probably be on the edges. And that'll be plenty annoying. This is going to be one of those times I hope that the weather forecasters are actually wrong.

ETA 5:35pm: There's a Special Weather Statement up now too that references another likely snowstorm coming in, along with the "wind event". So assuming that this does actually happen, this weekend is shaping up to be full of Suck.
annathepiper: (Default)
[livejournal.com profile] solarbird and I got up this morning to hear on the radio, to our mutual bemusement, that Seattle schools had been closed. This was confusing on the grounds that there had been no new snow in the general Seattle metropolitan area overnight, including in Kenmore.

But, as the Times has observed today, Seattle gets pretty pitiful at even the threat of snow.

I made it out to the appointments just fine, with nary a flake to be seen when I got to Kirkland for this morning's saline fill (which went fine, and Dr. McMillan says the next one will be the last one) and oncologist followup (which also went fine, and Dr. Kohn wants me to come back in March for a followup mammogram and breast MRI). It was also considerably warmer than it had been on Monday when Dara and I went down to the shops. Still a bit nippy and windy, though.

So I headed over to Northgate to run a few errands, and noted a few random bits of precipitation on the windshield on the way. Noticeably windier by the time I left there. And lots of clouds blowing around on the way home along Lake City Way.

I got home before anything interesting happened, thankfully. Around 4pm we had some sleety-haily mix start up, enough to drop a lot of slush on the steps, the side yard patio, and the driveway leading down into the street. That should freeze up right good overnight. And by right good I mean wow I'm glad I don't have to go anywhere tomorrow.

As of 4:30 or so it shifted to genuine snow. So now we're finally seeing some action. It remains to be seen as to how long this'll keep up tonight.
annathepiper: (Default)
When I see a National Weather Service winter storm warning hovering over my immediate area, y'know what I expect to see show up with it?

SNOW.

No sign of new snow yet here in Kenmore. I'm informed that Kirkland is clear, too, so my medical appointments for the morning are still on. The Times says this morning that the Seattle metropolitan area apparently managed to escape snow overnight due to a "shadow effect" of the Olympics, and that practically everybody around us got snow instead. Which is why the Seattle school districts are closed. (Yeah, I don't get it either.)

Anyway, off to medical appointments and then possibly to shopping. We'll see if any snow shows up while I'm out.
annathepiper: (Winter)
Looks like they're trying the Winter Storm Warning thing again, folks.

Keep your eyes peeled on the forecast over the next few hours. Or just look out your windows. That ought to tell us at least by late tonight if we are indeed about to get hammered with snow.

This may well mean an off chance that both of my medical appointments will be canceled tomorrow. Or not. The last winter storm warning was called off, after all!

ETA 5:09pm: OH HEY, note that if you're in Seattle proper, you're still under Winter Storm Watch status. It's only us folks farther to the north that are covered by the warning.

Still, it sounds like somebody's getting snow tonight.
annathepiper: (Default)
After all the whiplash in the forecast yesterday, we're still holding steady with the expected Big Cold this weekend. And now it's finally actually snowing in Kenmore. Not a stunning amount yet, but it's heavier than a flurry. So it'll be interesting to see if this keeps up.

Have had a delightful and restful day. Went off to have a chiro appointment and a checkup with my doctor; I've had to have her prescribe me some Allegra on the grounds that I suspect I may be harboring a mild allergy to the cats. This isn't a serious allergy, mind you, but just enough itchy eyes and sneezing going on to make me wonder if something's up. And Fred and George have been the only real alteration to our environment over the last year or so.

It's weird. This is certainly not the first time I've lived with multiple cats, but it's been the first time I've lived with two that are as fluffy as the boys are. And since I like them, I'm hoping the Allegra will manage this issue.

So far this afternoon my eyes have been noticeably less itchy, so this so far seems to be a win.

And for extra bonus Win, [livejournal.com profile] mamishka came over to hang out just before she heads East for the winter. We MUSH-geeked a bit; I'm not MUSHing anymore but I still appreciate Meems telling me about her adventures on Star Wars MUSH. And we watched the pilot of Due South just because I've been highly enjoying that and Meems hadn't seen it before. She and [livejournal.com profile] spazzkat went at it in Rock Band, then.

Looking forward to a relaxing evening, too. [livejournal.com profile] solarbird should be home soon from her Norwescon concom, and there will be pizza. <3
annathepiper: (Winter)
Last night's Winter Storm Watch has graduated to Winter Storm Warning.

If you're in the convergence zone like the Murk is, people, be prepared for up to six inches of snow. But they are saying tonight, rather than today, so hopefully it'll hold off until after everybody's done commuting home this evening.

Be prepared to deal. And by deal I mean 'looking out for all the other drivers around you who will be flipping out about the snow'. ;)

ETA 10:49am: Ah, looks like the Storm Warning has been called off. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] katatomic for the heads up!
annathepiper: (Winter)
Heads up, folks, we have a winter storm watch on our hands.

The areas north of Seattle (i.e., the Murkworks, oh joy) seem to be the main target zone; Seattle proper may not see as much action. Still, everybody be prepared. Whatever's coming in seems to be aiming square at the Friday evening commute.

Times article here

PI article here

The thing to note especially is that they're saying that it's going to get the coldest it's been since December of 1990.
annathepiper: (Wet Strongbow)
I just got a phone call from [livejournal.com profile] mamishka who says that power is out at MurkSouth. Things are looking fairly windy here at MurkNorth as well as of 2:36pm local time--and as I check the weather forecast, I see we have some expected friskiness on tap for tonight:

Special Weather Statement #1

Special Weather Statement #2

Wind Advisory

Joy! So if murkworks.net drops off the face of the planet tonight, this'll be why.

ETA 3:13pm: Power's back at MurkSouth but things are still looking windy, and the afternoon is young!
annathepiper: (Er what?)
It is snowing. In the Seattle area. At the end of March, almost April. This is just nuts.

Don't get me wrong. Normally I love me some snow. Right now though my tolerance for wet, cold weather is worn down right now, thanks to the MDF. I'm also a tad concerned for what this means about [livejournal.com profile] spazzkat's and [livejournal.com profile] solarbird's chances of making it home in a safe and timely fashion from Sakuracon, downtown. We'll have to see how the weather continues through the rest of this afternoon and evening.

We're having a good solid snow here in Kenmore, and have for the last little while. The flakes were big and fat for the longest time, though now they're getting smaller--still a very steady snowfall, nonetheless. It's accumulating in the yard and on the deck and roof.
annathepiper: (Sean WTH?)
Apparently we have been upgraded from Special Weather Statement to Snow Advisory.

*headdesk*

JOY!
annathepiper: (Dib WTF)
Who the hell turned winter back on, anyway?

Special Weather Statement, full of rain and snow... )

MurkNorth, of course, is right smack in the middle of the convergence zone.
annathepiper: (Hard Day)
Guh, I'm tellin' ya, hardcore rain, flood, and wind warnings are just the thing I wanted to see in the greater Seattle metro area on the day when I need to set out for my very first day of radiation treatment. I've been working from home all day so far, so I have at least missed the joy of this morning's commute. Not so fortunate was [livejournal.com profile] spazzkat, who relayed to [livejournal.com profile] solarbird and me that it took him about an hour and 15 minutes to get from Kenmore to downtown Seattle. Lake Forest Park Town Center was a mess, with the little creek in front of the shopping center overflowing its banks.

I've been following the coverage the Times has been posting all day, and note with some trepidation that the underpass under 405 that's right on my usual route over to Evergreen has been closed due to flooding. Which means I'll need to take a slightly longer route to get there. Hopefully there won't be any wacky fun surprises on Bothell Way up to 405, or on 405 back down into Kirkland.

Also, I think I'll be leaving super-early just to take it nice and slow and easy to get there. I'll either show up ridiculously early, in which case I'll hang around and read something, or else I'll get there close to the proper time after a very cautious drive. Wish me luck, folks.
annathepiper: (Winter)
So after a brief lull this afternoon, the snow kicked in again. We're back to heavy, large flakes coming down like nobody's business out there. And while Pagliacci's is indeed delivering, I just got called by their dispatcher saying that our delivery will in fact be late because of the snow! I assured them that that is quite all right, and that we have a hefty tip waiting for whoever's coming up the hill. Our pizza bill is $34 and change tonight, but fuck it, they get $40. Because wow, I appreciate not having to go out in this. :)

Also, in honor of the Decembery weather, I've broken my old Winter icon back out again, as well as Snowy Yahoo Anna for my previous post. I think I'll be able to reinstate Christmas Yahoo Anna, too, now that I have icon slots again!
