So as y'all will have seen, I live-Tweeted Longest Night. I just got up a little while ago from the six hours or so I was able to sleep, and am feeling surprisingly alert.

And generally surprised. It's snowing. Again. The current Winter Storm Warning that just got issued says to expect an additional three to six inches.

This makes the third serious snow we've had so far in the barrage. The article the Times has up here says that Seattle got freezing rain early this morning, too, and they are telling people to say off the roads unless absolutely necessary due to the roads being in a state technically known as "fucked". Definitely the worst snow we've had since the Big Snow about ten years ago, the one that dumped 17 inches at MurkSouth and had people skiing in Ravenna Park.

I am very, very grateful I don't actually have to be anywhere; this is an excellent time to be on vacation. Also very grateful that [livejournal.com profile] spazzkat made it to Virginia and [livejournal.com profile] mamishka made it east as well before all this hit.

This is really strange, because we are having almost exactly the same weather here in upstate New York.

and we are yet getting similarly whammed here on the Island (Vancouver, that is...) but with the addition of high winds and drifting.

suckily, I have not yet left for Boston. am now wondering whether flying on the 24th will actually be practicable.

well, our backup plan was based on leaving lots of float time between flights, and fully expecting to sleep on the airport floor in Toronto, as often happens.

we take first flight out of Comox at oh-six-jeezus in the morning, and end up on the third-last flight into Boston, so it ought to work okay.

weather here currently shows snow, too, but Comox is a military airfield so chances are it will be up and running okay.

plan C, of course, is to move to Fiji...... ^_^

Here in Fremont it's more of the same -- we got about 6" overnight, and it's been falling steadily since about 11am. Really picked up in the last hour or so, and forecasts are all over the place in "OMG"ness.

Still voting for "Snowpocalypse" as the official name of this one, though. It's catchier than Arctic Express. :D

Husband drives for Pagliacci and AFAIK they've put out a "no drive" on all the stores tonight. He walked down to the grocery store to fetch a few essentials, but otherwise we're hunkering down and staying homebound this evening. Thank goodness the wind didn't go crazy last night - would be miserable if there was no power.

I considered sending out some work-related email calling this 'Snowpocalypse Now' but since one of my coworkers grew up in Vietnam right after the war and another is from a former British-colonized country in Africa (ie, the generan setting of Heart of Darkness, the inspiration for Apocalypse Now) it seemed crazily overpriviledgedly white-girl-in-a-well-off-American-city insensitive.

Still, it is catchy, isn't it?

"telling people to say off the roads"

Unless we are flying down them on various slippery items!

I saw a guy get stuck on a semi-OK road near my house, then another car spin out trying to avoid him, and I waved off a third car, this all before it was even dark. Fuck.

It's actually been pretty warm out here. Stay warm!

I just barely made it. If it hadn't been for Joe's mighty vehicle of heft and his fearlessness of driving in bad weather conditions I wouldn't have made it to the airport. There were lanes on the highway that vanished as the snow became too much for people to get through. As it was, the snow delayed my flight by two hours.
