Thursday night, as we've done for all the Pirates of the Caribbean flicks so far, a big herd of us went to go see At World's End at the Cinerama downtown. It was great to see [livejournal.com profile] mamishka and [livejournal.com profile] tiggymalvern and quite a few others there; the crowd was, as expected, huge. Many of them were in pirate garb.

It was a bit of a shame that the movie was actually a bit of a mess. Don't get me wrong--I did actually enjoy watching it, and there are really cool things that need to be seen on the big screen in order to do them justice--but there are also some big honking plot holes. Also, and I suppose I may get keelhauled for this, but there was a bit too much overplaying of the whole Jack Sparrow schtick. Sorry, Jack fangirls. ;) Anyway, go in expecting more or less big stupid fun, and it'll be a decent way to blow some movie monex.

Yesterday was a surprise day off! My boss gave it to me by way of a thank you for working so hard on the Project From Hell, which was incredibly nice of her. So I slept in and then went off to chiro, and unexpectedly bumped into [livejournal.com profile] kathrynt and little Lillian, so we went to Caffe Ladro afterwards and ate and drank tasty things and hung out. And we yakked about le bebeh, and Kathryn made hopeful commentary about the interesting things going on with Lament, and she also told me all about this particular type of yarn called Sea Silk. This stuff is apparently about the right consistency for making socks, she tells me, only now the makers of it have a heavier version that's more the right weight for making oh, say, sweaters. As the company that makes this yarn is in Newfoundland, it will probably surprise none of you that they call the heavier version of this yarn Great Big Sea Silk.

This, of course, made me laugh and laugh and laugh. Q says that as soon as she has brain enough and time enough for knitting again, she's going to get a hold of some of this yarn and make me something out of it. Which really makes a girl feel loved. *^_^*

Meanwhile, I made obligatory admiring noises at the baby, who was cheerful and amiable and alert and paying sharp attention to all the tasty things we were consuming. Especially my fruity drink with whipped cream on top. She kept giving it this look like "HEY that looks way cooler than my smooshed pears. Gimme some!" And when I picked her up, she promptly kept sticking her hand in my mouth and grabbing hold of my upper lip, as if convinced that if she just got a finger or two in there, she could find where I put the Cool Food. Either that, or she was trying to figure out how the heck I was making Talky Noises. It's official. That baby's cute. Several random bystanders agreed!

This weekend will be more writing, and Folklife! Yay, Folklife and a four-day weekend!

Avast, me hearties! Set sail here for a glimpse of the Dread Pirate Captain [livejournal.com profile] mamishka and her bloodthirsty crew of piratical scalawags as they pillage and plunder the Woodinville Red Robin and theater!

(My very first LJ Scrapbook Gallery, go me! Kudos go out to [livejournal.com profile] tiggymalvern for the shots--I've resized 'em for web viewing and upload to the LJ Scrapbook system. ^_^)

PIRATES!

Okay folks, I promised a post of great piratical YARR-itude after last night's adventure into Woodinville, so here we go! Big kudos go out to [livejournal.com profile] mamishka for organizing it all, for lo, we had quite the large herd both at Red Robin and at the Woodinville Cinema, where we gathered to pillage, plunder, and drink tasty drinks full of rum. The hands on deck included of course the Meems (a.k.a. the Dread Pirate Captain Maggie Wiles), [livejournal.com profile] solarbird, [livejournal.com profile] spazzkat, [livejournal.com profile] darthhellokitty, [livejournal.com profile] kingchiron, [livejournal.com profile] lyricae, [livejournal.com profile] tinlail, [livejournal.com profile] tiggymalvern, and many more. [livejournal.com profile] lyricae and [livejournal.com profile] tiggymalvern both took pictures, and their shots should hopefully be showing up on their journals as well as Meems' soon! But they've also sent pics around, so I'll include in this post this photo of an attempt to shanghai an Asian pirate wench! )

We knew we were in for an amusing time when we closed in on the restaurant and saw Meems out in the parking lot with her pirate flag hoisted high. That gave us a fabulous point around which to rally, both outside as well as in the theater later. Meems brought all sorts of extra pirate props to hand out, which worked well for several of us--including me! I'd managed to actually put a vaguely pirate-looking outfit together, complete with brown feathers in my hair, and even fairly color-coordinated as well (despite the fact that you could argue that pirates do not care for fashion). But Meems' gold and yellow scarf really topped me off well. For [livejournal.com profile] kingchiron, she provided a large stuffed alligator. We told her after dinner that it really needed to have a clock stuck in it so it could tick.

It was quite, quite giggle-inducing to see one little girl in the restaurant come up to us with her jaw visibly dropped. Two young teenage-looking girls came up to us and begged for pictures as well. Lots and lots of people asked if we'd seen the movie yet, and we kept calling out that we were about to go see it after dinner. Our favorite responses to this question were "Movie? What movie?" and "Arrrrr! We're here to see Cars!" ;) And over in the theater, we discovered we weren't the only ones in costume either, as we spied a fellow in a fine Captain Jack Sparrow costume. We all yelled "YARR!" at him with great enthusiasm. :D

And as for the movie, suffice to say that it was a breathless, giddy, fabulous summer flick, perfect for popcorn consumption, and the only reason I had no popcorn was because of filling me pirate belly with too much shrimp and rum over at the restaurant. ;) [livejournal.com profile] casirafics has observed quite rightly that if you stop to think about it rationally, you can find several criticisms to make about it--part of me for example found it a bit incoherent at the beginning, and once or twice it felt too long--but who wants to think about this flick rationally? It's too much fun to just go along for the ride!

YARR! Prepare to be boarded by SPOILERS! )

This morning I got up to discover that I had totally forgotten to take yesterday's dosage of Synthroid--a BRILLIANT thing to do on a day when I'd intended to go into the Polyclinic and have them check my levels. Fortunately, the Polyclinic tells me that this does not in fact screw things up for my lab work and I won't have to come back in for them to draw another portion of blood. I am not entirely sure why missing my dose like that won't throw off my levels enough to worry about, but I will ask my endoc about that next week.

I also posted an incorrect number for yesterday's mileage, though that isn't nearly as big an oops. The 1.8 was "Times building to Polyclinic to bus stop", and didn't account for the 1.5 on the way into work. Doh!

But at least tonight there will be PIRATES (YARR!) and tasty food consumed at Red Robin, and this weekend will hopefully be full of writing the rest of Chapter 4 of Queen of Souls and perhaps some editing of Chapter 10 of Lament. And there will be another round of Hunt the Cat over at the Burning Hand, just so's we can try to verify that Ash is in fact still in the house. And hopefully some nice weather as well for frolicking in the sunshine!

Meanwhile, as we continue with July as the Month of Babies, I report with pleasure that Alan The Doyle and his Fairest One of All are now the proud parents of little Henry Doyle, and meanwhile, Russell Crowe and his wife Danielle are the proud parents of their second youngun, Tennyson Spencer Crowe. Much, much closer to home, [livejournal.com profile] chipmunck's firstborn is on the way as well, so warmest wishes go out to her and her spouse for the trouble-free arrival of their little one!

First and foremost, welcome to another new person reading! Hiya, [livejournal.com profile] liadra! And also, big ol' happy birthday wishes go out to [livejournal.com profile] jessicac!

I mailed off Lament of the Dove's partial yesterday, which was all eep-inducing. :) I've gotten somewhat more blase in general about sending off manuscripts, which I think is going to happen to any writer if she keeps at this for a while--but there's still something about sending a book out for the very first time. Especially if it's one you've been working on for three years! And it's nice to know that there's a post office within easy walking distance of my shiny new workplace, in case I have to walk up there again any time soon to mail off a full manuscript to Bantam (fingers crossed).

[livejournal.com profile] solarbird and I went over to [livejournal.com profile] kathrynt and [livejournal.com profile] llachglin's house last night in search of their wily missing feline, but alas, Ash was not yet to be found. We think he may still be hiding in the garage, and Kathryn tells us that if he's in there, it would be totally like him to hide there until he's sure it's safe to come out, not making a peep the entire time. So we left him some new food and a freshened litter box, and tonight I'll head back over there to find out whether either shows sign of kitty attention.

Today my team took me out to lunch at one of the few places in immediate walking distance--an Indian restaurant. The food was not terribly impressive, but then, my bar is set very high thanks to Cedars and Tandoori over in the U-district. But the company was pleasant and it was nice to have another chance to get to know the folks on the team.

And I get to hoof it over to the Polyclinic after work today to stop by their lab and let 'em do the check on my thyroid levels. I need to do it today, since tomorrow night there will be a gathering of PIRATES! Gods, I hope this movie follows through on the promise of its trailer. ;D And if the review from my standard favorite local reviewer is any sign, we'll get some great popcorn movie fun out of this tomorrow night!

First up: the new Superman Returns trailer. After a look-see, I must say Kevin Spacey does look promising as Lex Luthor, nicely reminiscent of Gene Hackman. The new kid playing Supes--well, he does seem to make a pleasantly doofy-looking Clark, somewhere between the Dean Cain Clark and the Christopher Reeve Clark, and closer to the latter, but not all the way there. Which I like. I'm more dubious about this idea of giving Lois Lane a kid, though. I get the whole concept of showing that she's Moved On(TM), but on the other hand, a Cute, Smart Kid as part of the plot is all too often a danger signal that the movie is going to suck (cases in point: The Legend of Zorro, The Mummy Returns). Here's hoping that in this instance, I'm wrong! I do want this movie to be good. :)

Next: shiny new trailer for Pirates of the Carribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest, and hee, yeah, that does look like fun. And Captain Jack gets all the good lines: "Elizabeth, those clothes do not flatter you at all, it should be a dress or nothing. I happen to have no dress in my cabin!"

Third: trailer for the new Bond flick, Casino Royale. Yeah, that looks like a Bond flick all right. Not sure yet what I think of the new guy, or whether I'll go see this at all, but we'll see what happens.

And in related news, I saw a promo poster for X3 on a bus this morning on my way into work. YES!

Yarr, because the piratical tendencies o' the B'ys o' Great Big Sea be gettin' discussed as we speak over on [livejournal.com profile] greatbigsea, I bring ye now these pirate-flavored ditties:

"Yarmouth Town", for that be a fine, fine port for any rovin' pirate.

"Lukey", 'cause green be a pretty color for any pirate boat.

"French Perfume", for it actually be about a pirate even if they call 'im a smuggler. Also, his boat explodes. Yarr, explosions be fun!

"I'm a Rover", 'cause what pirate ain't?

"The Night Pat Murphy Died", for if yer mate goes to Davey Jones' locker, yarr, be singin' about it.

"Jolly Rovin' Tar", because all pirates are!

"Barque in the Harbor", if ye be wantin' some lovin' from Spanish lasses when ye sail into Spanish waters.

"Captain Kidd", even though it not be all available for the hearin', but even a bit of it sounds piratical!

And, o' course, no proper pirate should ever be without this in her grog locker: "Old Black Rum"!

Be givin' up more ditties, mateys, to sing when we set sail!
