First up: the new Superman Returns trailer. After a look-see, I must say Kevin Spacey does look promising as Lex Luthor, nicely reminiscent of Gene Hackman. The new kid playing Supes--well, he does seem to make a pleasantly doofy-looking Clark, somewhere between the Dean Cain Clark and the Christopher Reeve Clark, and closer to the latter, but not all the way there. Which I like. I'm more dubious about this idea of giving Lois Lane a kid, though. I get the whole concept of showing that she's Moved On(TM), but on the other hand, a Cute, Smart Kid as part of the plot is all too often a danger signal that the movie is going to suck (cases in point: The Legend of Zorro, The Mummy Returns). Here's hoping that in this instance, I'm wrong! I do want this movie to be good. :)

Next: shiny new trailer for Pirates of the Carribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest, and hee, yeah, that does look like fun. And Captain Jack gets all the good lines: "Elizabeth, those clothes do not flatter you at all, it should be a dress or nothing. I happen to have no dress in my cabin!"

Third: trailer for the new Bond flick, Casino Royale. Yeah, that looks like a Bond flick all right. Not sure yet what I think of the new guy, or whether I'll go see this at all, but we'll see what happens.

And in related news, I saw a promo poster for X3 on a bus this morning on my way into work. YES!

Saw a snippet of a trailer for the new X3 movie while at work. I stopped in mid-stride just to see what's up. Looks to be a rather interesting film.

The Superman Returns trailer (and the earlier teaser trailer) make it seem like it's quite well done. I do worry a little about the kid cringe factor element, but certainly not enough to keep me away from the film.

Looks like we're in for a good summer as far as nice, flashy action flicks are concerned. And Pirates II doesn't look half bad (though the first thing I thought when I was 'Davey Jones' was "Cthulhu!").

Add 'funny member of [sexual/national/cultural/etc.] [minority/community] who always do stupid things' to the list of suck signals, as you mentioned 'cute, smart kid'... I could recall only one movie, where such character is present, but movie is nice: 'Star Wars' (original trilogy).

'Pirares...' looks cool.

No, I meant C3PO... Lando (for my opinion) is not front-line character, he flicks two or three times (yes, doing stupid things sometimes), while C3PO is real 'member of hero's band'. You see, if we'll look for second- and third- line stupids we'll find a lot of them in nearly any movie. But stupid front-liner is a signal. E.g. in first 'Pirates...' Jack is somehow going to fit into frontliner-stupid role and several pirates of opposing side (along with governor) are secondliners. But here we have different situation: the main hero is smart, but mad. I speak mostly of situations where main hero is nearly ideal and has a friend (borther-in-arms, etc.) who always makes idiotic remarks, falling in trashcans and etc.

I'm glad we've understood each other. It's OK, that you anwered only now - I know precisely how it happens when other things demand more and more attention. ;-)

it's high-order sacrilege.

David Niven doing bizarro Scots dances and Woody Allen as Jimmy Bond? You cannot remake that.

I still say the best Superman was Kirk Alyn.

Nope. Well before my time. I only got in on the tail end of the George Reeves TV version, and even that in reruns, later. The only Superman when I grew up was in comics and animated on Saturday mornings.
