annathepiper: (Nethack Lolcat Eated It)

One of the side effects of userinfospazzkat playing all this Skyrim here at the Murk: I’ve totally gotten back onto a Nethack kick.

I had a great game going, and fired up the save file from yesterday’s run tonight. I was in Sokoban and died horribly, like ya do, ’cause, well, Nethack. I proceeded to have the following conversation with userinfokisanthe:

userinfoannathepiper: I’m in the middle of Serious Nethack May Be Serious
userinfoannathepiper: Level 11 character currently in Sokoban
userinfokisanthe: Ooh! Hope it’s the Bag of Holding Sokoban.
userinfoannathepiper: SHIT DEAD
userinfoannathepiper: Hallucinating and burdened and surrounded and then a damn incubus started taking my armor off!
userinfoannathepiper: Also, it was the amulet of reflection sokoban!
userinfokisanthe: …okay, that’s not funny, but it is funny.
userinfoannathepiper: It was, really ;)
userinfoannathepiper: I was cheerfully sneaking through the final treasure room killing monsters one at a time and then a damn black light went off
userinfoannathepiper: And then suddenly HELLO EVERYBODY AWAKE!
userinfokisanthe: You’d think a *black* light wouldn’t wake everybody up!
userinfoannathepiper: So I backed into a corner and started shooting everything in sight, until the incubus showed up!
userinfokisanthe: So, assuming the black light affected the critters it woke up too… you died naked in a big murderous hallucinatory orgy?
userinfoannathepiper: Yeah pretty much XD
userinfokisanthe: Best way to go! ;)

And now in my current game, I was hungry, so I whipped out a tin and discovered it contained pickled dwarf. There I am nomming it, and the next monster I see? A dwarf. And all I can think is AWK-WARD!

It has amused me for a while now that in the vast repertoire of tunes available to Irish musicians, several of them have vaguely SF/F-nal names, like “King of the Fairies”, “Queen of the Fairies”, and “The Elven Cloak”.

That last one in particular, though, got me thinking of Nethack thanks to my propensity for playing Elf characters. Which, of course, led me to wonder about other hypothetical Nethack-themed Irish tune names! Such as:

  • The Surly Shopkeeper
  • Farewell to My Pet Cat
  • Gold in the Bag of Holding
  • The Cursed Loadstone Lament
  • The Polymorph Trap Jig (this one would definitely change keys AND time signatures between the A part, the B part, and the C part)
  • Yet Another Stupid Death Reel
  • The Elven Boots
  • The Infravision Jig
  • Izchak’s Magic Lamp (That I Stole in Minetown)
  • The Vibrating Square
  • The Lich That Cursed My Broadsword
  • Road to Gehennom
  • Drowsy Maggie Needs Sleep Resistance
  • A Luckstone to Banish Misfortune
  • The Succubus Washerwoman

Anybody got any others?

In which our heroine does get the Amulet–but doesn’t even make it out of Gehennom once she has it. AUGH. Farewell, Natil the Elf Ranger, and may your passage into the West be smooth sailing!

In which our heroine really hasn’t played Nethack in a long time, because she forgot an easy way around her whole Crap I Don’t Have a Means of Levitation problem–and in which she finally clears not only Fort Ludios, but also the Castle and Medusa as well.

This being last night’s Nethack adventures!

It’s been quite a while since I’ve played Nethack–and I’m kind of surprised that on a day that ISN’T a full moon, I’ve got a serious Ascension candidate!

Short form: Natil the Elf Ranger has completed the Quest and is now seeking a ring of levitation so that she can finish Fort Ludios. She’s currently at Exp. level 16, HP 114, and AC -38! Thanks to early wands of wishing as well as other lucky finds she is armored for bear, with gray dragon scale mail, speed boots, gauntlets of dex, and a shield of reflection. She’s armed with her original elven dagger as well as the Longbow of Diana.

Wish her luck, folks. Details for the Nethack geeks behind the fold!

1. Standing by the doors of stores with tripe in your hand in the hope that your randomly wandering cat within will just happen to grab something off the shelves and bring it to you will get you some very, very unwelcome attention from the management. Also, they'll probably impound your cat.

2. You do not in fact have an increased shot of running into nastier monsters if you go down stairs.

3. People cannot teleport or dig their way into bank vaults, claim to be Croesus, and dig their way right back out with all your money because the vault guard fell for it.

4. Worshippers are not required to drag freshly killed animals into churches in the hopes that sacrificing them will make God drop interesting items on their heads.

5. Your chances of running into a randomly wandering bunch of soldier ants are in fact quite small.

6. Absolutely no worries whatsoever about triggering a polymorph trap and turning into a blue jelly, surrounded by the shredded remains of everything you were previously wearing, on your way to work.

7. You may not have any wands of magic missile, sleep, lightning, or death in your backpack, but then again, nobody else around you does either. This is a good thing, because you'll notice you're also not carrying a shield of reflection.

8. Trust me on this: the world is a safer place without air elementals.

9. No one is obligated to carry around multiple bags' worth of mysterious items on the off chance that a handily encountered Scroll of Identify will say whether any of this crap is in fact useful.

10. Tripping down the stairs will in all likelihood not result in your landing on a cockatrice corpse.

Over on [livejournal.com profile] nethack, [livejournal.com profile] cyranojoe has pondered playing with making a Time Lord character class for Nethack. This makes me laugh and laugh and laugh with geekish glee, and the entire Murkworks promptly came up with various ideas on how to implement such a character class:

The YASD of the evening? Choking on a black pudding corpse! *headdesk* GAH! I should have known. And here I thought my YASD was going to be "swallowed by air elemental". ;)

I'd made it down to dungeon level 22. I'd cleaned out a 10x6 leprechaun hall on level 9, and had used the gold to boogie back to Minetown and buy my AC down to -18, which was pretty nifty. A few potions of gain level took me from level 12 to level 15. And I found a third ghost of mine (a previous iteration of Natil the Ranger, in fact) on level 11--the Big Room. Notable loot out of that haul was an extra set of GDSM and some more gold.

Decided to go looking for the Fort at that point, and made it down to level 22, picking up more gold out of vaults on the way. Found a couple of David's Treasure Zoos as well as some throne rooms, and had just killed my first two dragons in the throne room on level 22--a white and a silver. The silver one dropped scales. And eating the white one, don't you know, was the one that pushed me up into Too Satiated to Eat Anything Else. But was I paying attention? Nooooo! *headdesks some more*

Goodbye Natil the Ranger...

You choked in The Dungeons of Doom on dungeon level 22 with 153557 points,
and 14178 pieces of gold, after 17734 moves.
You were level 15 with a maximum of 97 hit points when you choked.

You made the top ten list!

 No Points Name Hp [max]
  1 5342682 jenna-Arc-Hum-Fem-Neu ascended to demigoddess-hood. 376 [409]
  2 4585962 jenna-Ran-Hum-Fem-Neu ascended to demigoddess-hood. 94 [369]
3 313780 jenna-Tou-Hum-Fem-Neu died in The Dungeons of Doom on
                level 27. Killed by a captain. - [153]
4 153557 Natil-Ran-Elf-Fem-Cha choked on her food in The
Dungeons of Doom on level 22. Choked on a black
                pudding corpse. 84 [97]

I see I've dropped a bones file. Muaha. If I can get another character that deep in the dungeon, that's going to be a hell of a stash to loot!

Icons!

I blame this on a conversation with [livejournal.com profile] spazzkat and [livejournal.com profile] risu on the MurkMUSH, and the fact that the world just needs more Nethack icons. And also, because Nethack and lolcats are two great tastes that go great together.

Nethack Lolcat Fudz Nethack Lolcat Eated It

And also, because [livejournal.com profile] cheesygirl continues to make wonderful Doctor Who icons, and because Ten and cats also go quite well together:

Ten and KITTY! Be Ur Companun?

The Nethack icons are mine. Feel free to swipe 'em, credit me on your userpics pages if you take 'em. The Doctor icons are [livejournal.com profile] cheesygirl's; I pulled them from here. Please to follow her wishes for icon swiping!

So last night I fired up a Nethack game. I've been in the mood to play Wizards lately, and specifically male human neutral Wizards named Harry with cats named Mister. Not that I've got any particular Wizard in mind, of course... ^_^

Anyway, in last night's game, the Nethack gods pretty much handed me a free ticket down to Gehennom. 'Cause I mean, damn, when you find an armor store on Level 2 and it has all of these things, any self-respecting Nethack player should damn well make it down to at least Gehennom:
  • +2 gauntlets of power
  • +4 dwarvish mithril
  • +1 shield of reflection
  • speed boots
  • gauntlets of dexterity (which I'm not actually using yet, till I can get a chance to enchant 'em up)
I lost my original pet fairly early, after running ahead of it a few levels to try to find enough gold to buy stuff in the shop. And while I did later pick up a dog (named Mouse, naturally), I lost the doggie after getting the luckstone out of the Gnomish Mines. Sniff.

As of last night's save I made it all the way down to... level 19, I think it was, where I finally found the portal to Fort Ludios. I've passed the level that the Quest portal appears on, but I'm only at experience level 13, so no Quest for me yet.

I have an uncursed magic lamp, which I really need to get blessed as soon as possible so I can wish me up some silver dragon scale mail. The +4 dwarvish mithril is extremely sweet (ohhh the sweetness of the mithril, all of my past Rogues and Rangers are weeping for the sweetness of that armor), but it also means I can't cast spells worth a flying damn right now, which is the main fun of playing a Wizard in the first place.

I also have too much extraneous crap and no bag of holding yet. So I'm thinking I probably need to forgo the temptation to wade immediately into the Fort and instead boogie back up to Minetown (co-aligned altar there, woot!), get going on some holy water, and see about whether I can find a bag of holding in the meantime. And if not, to leave all of the non-essential stuff in a safe cache somewhere. Even with +2 GoP, I'm wandering around Burdened right now, and that's not acceptable when I'm about to wander into the mass melee that is the Fort.

Most importantly, I need to see if I can sacrifice my way to getting Magicbane, since I don't have that yet either.

This should be fun. I'm expecting I'm going to do something really stupid any time now and get myself killed, in which case I'll be quite irritated with myself--'cause I mean, really, the Nethack gods are pretty much screaming at me to get this character ascended.

Stay tuned for further details!

ETA 7:06pm: Well, that expected YASD did indeed occur. I'd made it back up to Minetown and was working on buying divine protection. I'd been cheerily sacrificing things on the co-aligned altar in the middle of the town and had just gotten Magicbane.

Not ten turns later, way, way too close to really make prayer a viable option, I ran into a chickatrice. Now there's a stone statue of Harry the Wizard in the middle of Minetown. I hope the watchmen remember to sweep around his feet!

annathepiper: (Tenth Doctor)
On the merry recommendations of [livejournal.com profile] casirafics and [livejournal.com profile] kieri, I have tonight purchased off the iTunes store the audio version of the Doctor Who book I just read, The Stone Rose. The main virtue of this audio version is that it is performed by the Tenth Doctor Himself, and it is extremely gigglesome to hear him switching back and forth between his natural Scottish accent and his Doctor Voice. I've only just listened to the very beginning so far, but I have hit enough to hear him do his impersonations of Rose, Jackie, and Mickey. As promised, too, his imitation of Jackie is quite, quite good. ;) I think I shall have to consider purchasing the other two books he reads, and possibly also the one read by Anthony Stewart Head as well since mmm, Voice of Giles. The only drawback with these things are that they are abridged, but eh well, I'd wish to have the printed versions as well anyway!

At the same time I also purchased a couple of albums by the Paperboys--Dilapidated Beauty and The Road to Ellenside, since both of them have finally shown up on the iTunes music store. Hurray! I've been anxious to have those for some time.

I've been back onto a Nethack kick, jumping back and forth between playing Wizards and Rangers and Healers and occasional jaunts into some of the classes I don't play very often, like Monk and Tourist. I blame it entirely upon the aforementioned Mr. Tennant that I now have a Tourist character file for Nethack, wherein the character is named "Doctor", his dog is named K-9, and his default fruit name is "jelly baby".

Meanwhile, a bit of writing news. Last night I fired off a couple of query letters to agents, hoping to use it as a prod to get myself in gear with finishing up the edits on Lament. (Queen of Souls, not yet done, is not yet queryable.) And I am arranging to be at this year's Writer's Weekend as well, so if folks on my Friends list are going to be there, sing out and let me know!

Rather behind on posting anything interesting for the past few days, but then, I haven't had anything terribly interesting to post about, so that's all good. The last few days have been busy at work, and I have found that while none of the various things I do at work are particularly difficult or challenging, there's a good deal of it to do, and so I'm happy to be kept reasonably busy. I was also pleased to be informed along with a coworker that we were "amazing" by our boss, so go us. ^_^

I trust most of you all on my Friends list have seen the Star Trek Inspirational Posters site by now. My favorites are definitely this one and this one, but I have to just make sure whether [livejournal.com profile] sarekofvulcan has seen this one, 'cause Garrett, it totally reminded me of you. ;)

Housemate [livejournal.com profile] risu has recently ascended a Ranger in Nethack, which has totally gotten me back onto a Nethack kick. For giggles and grins, I tried playing a Tourist character named Zim (with of course a dog named Gir), and remarked to my beloved [livejournal.com profile] solarbird that it was very odd wandering around a Nethack game with a character named Zim. She said, "I didn't know Nethack had an Idiot class!" I said, "It does, it's called Tourist!"

I totally need a Nethack icon now.

Looking forward to a quiet writing-type weekend--especially since next weekend, Dara, [livejournal.com profile] spazzkat and I will be preparing to head off to our Worldcon/Disneyland vacation down in L.A. Y'all consider this your advance warning of the Impending Anna Shortage. Any of y'all going to actually be at Worldcon too, sing out!

Last night, Paul and I stopped at Barnes and Noble, so I took the opportunity to blow my $30 rebate card from Cingular for my cell phone purchase. I wound up getting a couple of books--Dies the Fire by S.M. Sterling, since [livejournal.com profile] kieri had recommended it, and a new one called Webmage by Kelly McCullough, since it sounded like some fluffy fun and had a combo of magic and computer tech. And, for extra giggles, I picked up Vol. 1 of the Season One DVDs for Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea! Ah, cheesy Irwin Allen Sixties Skiffy, I (heart) you so.

Last but not least, I appear to have been tagged on two different memes, so what the hey, let's do this. I don't tag, but if you want to play, by all means jump in.

So most of Borg is at the company meeting today, except for us contractors. I've been asked to go ahead and try to do our regular testing today, but the problem with this is that I am extremely dubious that we're going to see an actual build. Given that I was told to assume that no FTE's are going to be around, if the build process breaks at all, I will have no way to actually get anything to test. Guess we'll just have to see; I was also told that if we don't have anything to test by 2pm, scram.

I suspect I will be scramming at 2pm. And I suspect I'll be poking at Lament up until then.

The Martian Death Flu has almost blown over. I still have periodic sneezes and coughs, but they are slowly decreasing in intensity, and my ability to sleep is slowly coming back as well. I am relieved. It's good to start feeling normal again.

I am now completely caught up on season 1 of Lost, though I need to watch the season 2 premiere still; it's waiting on our Tivo. I hope to watch that, along with the Battlestar Galactica summer finale and the next episode of Bones, this weekend with [livejournal.com profile] mamishka. She's come down sick too, though, so here's hoping that she'll actually be up for that.

Latest read: the Serenity novelization. Spoiler-free mini-review: very good job for what it is, i.e., a media novelization. There are bits in it that aren't in the movie, which were interesting additions, and the author did a good job of changing points of view between various characters. He nicely captured the "voices" of the members of the crew, and once or twice got in some thoughts with a couple of them that were actively funny (especially with Jayne). I especially liked the bits from River's point of view, because I liked how he portrayed her thought processes and how her mind works.

Also, I read the last of the Serenity three-part comics, and my overall impression of them has not changed. Nice little story bits, but there's just not enough! They feel like five-or-ten-minute glimpses of what really ought to have been a much longer story. The art's nice, and the feel is right, but there's just not enough there.

I have an unexpectedly good Nethack game going on my laptop at home. Level 12 Rogue with gauntlets of power, a shield of reflection, and the potential to get gray dragon scale mail if I can just find or make another scroll of enchant armor. Made it through Sokoban and the Gnomish Mines, explored all the way down to the Medusa level (and promptly fled back upstairs from the titan by the stairs), and am now in search of Fort Ludios.

Tonight, we gather at the Burning Hand to celebrate the birthday of [livejournal.com profile] kathrynt's mother. There will be tasty smoked meats to consume and alcholic beverages and general camaraderie and fun.

Tomorrow, I go with [livejournal.com profile] mamishka to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] jessicac and [livejournal.com profile] kingchiron for a viewing of Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation. This ought to be fun. For those of you who don't know what that is, it's a pretty much frame-by-frame recreation of Raiders of the Lost Ark done by a bunch of kids, over the course of about six years. You can see the cast visibly growing up. Hee.

Still no word from Luna yet.
