In which our heroine succeeds in the Wizard Quest, only to discover thereafter that this game has a Fort Ludios after all; and in which the new moon doesn't really slow her down in the slightest.

Here's a quick snapshot of where I was at the beginning of tonight's game:

Shenneret the Enchantress  St:18 Dx:18 Co:16 In:20 Wi:20 Ch:10  Chaotic
Dlvl:15 $:105 HP:108(108) Pw:197(197) AC:-24 Xp:14/80682 T:30907 Burdened

These stats, I note with satisfaction, were the result of several potions of gain ability out of the ghost loot from level 23. I have a profound appreciation now for the value of high INT on a spellcaster. I note also that 30,907 moves so far is a good chunk of the previous ascension I've had, which was only about 50K--if Shenneret becomes a serious contender for an ascension, she's going to take a lot longer at it than my Valkyrie did.

Anyway, just before ducking into the Quest I dropped a bit of stuff in the store on 15 and took off the ring of slow digestion just to see if I could make an impact on the food. Just because I feel weird leaving food lying around. *^_^*;; Also, having the teleport control and free action rings is awfully useful.

Iskierka, I discovered, had vanished onto the Quest level! Unfortunately, though, I'd been separated long enough from her that she'd gone hostile--and I learned that no, throwing food at a winter wolf that used to be your pet does not re-tame it. Had to put her down. Sniff. Also soon lost Australia to a vampire bat; I'm just doomed to not have a pet in this game, apparently!

Quest highlights include:

  • Found my first wraith corpse before I got to the Quest leader, which bumped me up to level 15;
  • Nazgul on the way out of chatting with Neferet the Green, which amused me greatly as I've just recently re-watched the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy and I kept thinking "I AM NO MAN"; also, Neferet the Green must clearly be a missing member of Gandalf's order, hee;
  • Found a scroll of identify and verified old gloves were GoP; dropped 'em as they're not really useful to me as a wizard;
  • Another wraith corpse on level 2 got me up to level 16, and a scroll of enchant armor got me down to AC -25;
  • Found another magic lamp!
  • First dragon kill on level 3, a white dragon, which finally got me cold resistance; also found a spellbook of detect unseen; took me a bit to find the doors to work my way into the stairs, but otherwise a no-brainer;
  • Round about level 4 I realized I really needed poison resistance, and started snacking on vampire bats since I have a unicorn horn--only to learn from the wiki that oh okay, duh, those don't confer poison resistance; also decided to go ahead and blow an enchant weapon scroll on Magicbane;
  • Level 5 got me another another scroll of genocide, blessed! GOODBYE rust monsters and disenchanters. Also, yet another wraith corpse, and experience level 17. Ooh, instrinsic teleport control. Which just verifies I can swap that ring off;

Once I got to the final level, I verified that yeah... the Dark One is a pushover. And I surely can't be the only person who keeps flashing back to that old MST3K skit about the "Dog One"? "See if you can mock me in the Room of Questions!" Well okay, maybe it is just me. ;)

Once out of the Quest, I decided to give Ludios one last serious search run. Went back up to level 10 to start working my way down, and converted the altar on 12 on my way up.

A black naga in the Big Room on 11 finally got me poison resistance. And, having learned about this useful trick, I killed my first troll--and tinned it to keep it from coming back. Tinning kits, where have you been all my life?

(I'm probably the only one flashing on the little can with the red sneaker monster from Warner Brothers when I think of doing this, too.)

Back down on 16, I wiped out the Treasure Zoo there and killed my first ettin. But I had to pray my way out of cockatrice stoning, because I was dumb and left my lizard corpses in one of the BoHs. I fixed this at my earliest opportunity.

There was a vault on 19 that I'd missed, I found. But the Ludios portal wasn't there. It was one more level down, on 20! I got a little suspicious when I bumped into both a captain and a soldier wandering around that level--and it didn't take me long to finally find the vault and the portal therein.

Ludios highlights:

  • Dragon tally: two greens, one silver, one blue;
  • God-DAMN, magic missile and fireball spells make wiping out the entire Ludios regiment a lot easier;
  • At one point, a sergeant quaffed a cursed potion of invisibility and I saw "You feel aggravated at the invisible sergeant." Actually, I thought at the time, I was pretty sure that Shenneret the Enchantress felt aggravated at every last one of those boys;
  • Shortly thereafter, a lieutenant played a bugle and a lot of the troops threw off messages about being "ready for battle". Tad late there, guys, after I've been flinging fireballs at you;
  • Had just enough wands of cold to ice up the water around the back door, and was able to fling spells across the drawbridge to take out most of the monsters. Three trolls were downed and tinned, and Croesus wasn't difficult;
  • Nothing off the throne in the throne room after three tries, but it ain't like I'm hurting for wishes or genocides in this game!

Final gold tally (counting other gold I found on the way in): 62,318. YOWZA!

Victorious, I #invoked the Eye to plunk myself up to Sokoban, in an effort to try to rearrange all my loot and shuck anything I didn't really want. Found a new spellbook: create monster.

My housemate [livejournal.com profile] risu, who has beaten the game three times--once as a Wizard, in fact--advised me to blow my spare wish on a spellbook of identify. I took her up on this and got some other extraneous crap ID'd and dropped.

And, finally, made my way back into the Mines to buy as much more protection as I could manage. Hit the 9 mark but actually managed to squeeze one extra point out of the priest of Thoth. Dropped a lot of stuff in the store in Minetown, including most of my wands. However: also found water walking boots.

Did a bit more cleanup of crap potions and scrolls by way of preparing for my next magic marker, parked at the altar on level 3 in the main dungeon, and saved.

Tomorrow night: preparing for Medusa. I'm dubious about the water walking boots--even if that'll get me across the water, won't that still leave me vulnerable to drowning? I may have to go with the Plan B of dig down and come back blindfolded up the stairs to take Medusa out.
