In which I come agonizingly close to actually winning the game--but in which I die hideously on the Astral Plane!

Well, so. This last run had started out excellently enough. I came back from the save file still parked in the Wizard of Yendor's tower, so I took the opportunity to blow my last wand wish on a spellbook of finger of death. Rearranged stuff a bit to get unburdened, and, thusly prepared for Rodney to BRING IT, I headed out to find the vibrating square.

The portal in Rodney's tower took me back down to level 47. The square was down on 51, and I had no encounters with the Wizard, though I did get a couple of messages about a malignant aura surrounding Magicbane. Yet another reason why I am full of mighty love for that blade.

Went through the ritual to open the Sanctum, and a potion of gain level took me up to experience level 24. A ring of conflict helped me mow my way towards the temple, too. The ring of levitation got me over the fire traps easily enough, and a couple of spell shots took down the High Priest. I was amused that Moloch roared all pissed-off-like at me, but all he had in him apparently were a couple of lightning strikes. Me: "Dude, is that all you've got?"

Nonetheless, once the Amulet was in my possession, the next item on the agenda was to RUN AWAY!

Another potion of gain level on 42 got me to level 25, and the mysterious force actually let me off fairly lightly--I did get teleported three times on the way out of Gehennom, but each time was only to some other point on the same level. Not nearly as annoying as it could have been. I kept getting those malignant aura messages, and Magicbane kept flinging them off. I did my best not to engage any more monsters than absolutely necessary, and that especially included the green slime I saw on level 41.

A magic trap in the Valley of the Dead bumped my charisma up to 12. Har.

Finally had to cross Medusa's level next, and happened to bump into my third artifact of the game when I killed an excavator wielding Demonbane. My housemate remarked that Demonbane was not her first choice of tool when conducting excavations. ;)

On the way up from Medusa's level, I was startled to see the "sad feeling" message since as far as I'd known, I was out of pets. Then I realized that my charisma had gone up again to 13; I must have triggered another magic trap and tamed a gremlin or something.

Ran into an Angel on level 13; bit of a surprise, that. It teleported away before I could kill it, and I didn't want to waste time tracking it down.

When I finally made it back to Sokoban, the Wizard finally caught up with me--and tried to take the Amulet, of course. Finger of Death took care of that problem.

I decided to drop everything that wasn't absolutely vital, and, as per [livejournal.com profile] risu's recommendation, blew the last magic lamp on a blessed magic marker so I could whip up a scroll of genocide to take out sea monsters--planning ahead for the Plane of Water. Left Sokoban at last when I was unburdened, picked up a crystal ball I'd previously seen lying around on the Oracle level on 8, and hightailed it up for the Plane of Earth.

The Plane of Earth was trivial. Rodney showed up again, and I was quite amused that "So thou thought thou couldst kill me, foo!" had a lot less impact when one could smack the guy upside the head with a Finger of Death spell. Me: "Are you done? I got more!"

Air was difficult, though less difficult than I actually expected. Rodney showed up again here, and the wand of death I was carrying around took him out as well as a few air elementals that might otherwise have given me serious pause.

Fire was very fast. The outgoing portal turned out to be very near the incoming one.

On Water, I learned that you couldn't cast the fireball spell there! Who knew? Not me! Fortunately, the utter lack of sea monsters, plus me having levitation, made Water fairly trivial too.

Astral... whoo boy. Got the expected tame guardian angel, and headed left to try for that altar. However, that altar turned out to be guarded by Pestilence, and that's what did me in. He made me burn through my only amulet of life saving, and the third time I killed him, I totally forgot to cure myself with the unicorn horn. To wit: ARGH!

So, yeah. Tantalizingly close, close enough that I even had [livejournal.com profile] solarbird watching my efforts and keeping tabs on my hit points. Still, though, a good game. A very good game indeed.

So I gotta dumb question: What were you doing carrying around all those cursed food rats?

Actually, it's not. One of the dirty little secrets is that Famine is a complete joke - Famine's big attack is making you starve to death very, very slowly. If you are Satiated when you meet Famine (and why wouldn't you be?), you have at least 1,000 nutrition units between you and Fainting; Famine drains a princely 40-79 units per hit, can only hit you with hunger once per move, and moves at normal speed. Each K-rat you can chow down (taking one of your moves, and you should be Fast or Very Fast at this point) restores 400 units. To starve to Famine takes real work, especially given that an endgame player can slice and dice Famine's hitpoints away in 2-3 moves.

Curse you! I've downloaded it to play at work (afternoon breaks), or at least I would if (1) I could see those tiny little sprites (tiles?) and (2) if I could figure out how to get outside the first two rooms! Argh! Two open doors, one led down a dead-end tunnel, the other says it's open but I can't get through it.

Any help sites you could recommend for newbies?
