Big ol' happy birthday wishes go out to [livejournal.com profile] lyonesse!

It occurred to me that I need to contact Dr. Marshall to ask her how soon after the surgery I need to see her again, just to make sure I go on thyroid meds at the proper time. Last time around I still had half a thyroid left, but this time I won't have ANY, and I don't know how long it'd take my system to chug through all the thyroid hormone left over once the thyroid is removed. I've called in to ask about that, though I had to leave voice mail. Whee.

Episode 2 of Battlestar Galactica's second season tonight; looking forward to that, as well as to [livejournal.com profile] mamishka's coming over to watch the episodes of The Dead Zone that have been stacking up on our Tivo. (Even though I do not approve of the new theme song for the show for this season.)

Most of their data comes from "The Atlas of Middle Earth," a book put out by someone else who did all the research. I've got the book, so if you want me to calculate some other distances that aren't on the list on the Eowyn site, I can.

Said book rules. It's got all sorts of stuff for every geographic feature mentioned by Tolkien ever, including all the Silmarillion stuff.

The pharmacist told me once (when I called up spazzing out because I'd forgotten to bring the kid's meds on an overnight trip) that thyroid hormone has a pretty long half-life in the body. I'm presuming that works the same for the stuff your own body makes.

I dunno... chugging a week's worth at once sounds like you'd be begging for hyperthyroid symptoms once they hit the bloodstream. Unless they're selling a time-release variety, which I doubt.

The T4 (Synthroid) stuff is fairly slow-acting; it takes three or four weeks to purge the stuff. T3 (Cytomel) wears off completely in a week or so. Although from my experience they'll give you your first dose of Synthroid the day after your surgery, and you'll go home with a 'scrip for a full replacement dose (as opposed to what you'd been taking, which may have been a partial). It'll probably take a couple of months and a couple of blood tests to get you leveled out. Then you'll need to re-check whenever you get a status change: Major weight change, if your metabolism changes significantly between winter and summer (I know someone that does that), etc. etc.
