I just found out from solarbird, spazzkat, and risu that someone has broken into the carriage house at MurkSouth. They apparently made off with all the keys to the main house, and now Dara's having to get a locksmith to come and change all the locks pretty much ASAP.

This is irritating beyond words, not only for the 'we can't really afford to spend several hundred bucks right now' factor, but also for the whole thing with SOMEBODY BROKE INTO OUR PROPERTY AND PUT ALL OUR TENANTS AT RISK.

GODDAMMIT!

Don't know yet; Dara's at MurkSouth right now dealing with locksmith stuff. I'll ask her tonight if the expense of replacing the locks can be covered by insurance.

Yeah... not as bad as it could have been, thankfully, since Dara discovered this pretty quickly and the main house hasn't been broken into. But it's just one more thing that makes me growl about the U-district. >:|

Well, Dara's just had a locksmith come out and do emergency changes of all the locks. But this won't stop the bastards from coming back to check, regardless. Grr.

Which we don't have, and which we can't afford to buy anyway. Getting a locksmith there TONIGHT was the only option. Dara did not have the luxury of going out and buying locks herself--that would have left the house unwatched. So she had to call someone to come there.

How about fake spy cameras from computer stuff sitting around and red LEDs? Keith suggests this is often enough to make them decide "easier target next door" even though it's cheap....

Dara did thankfully discover the problem before the bastards actually came back to break in--so she had a locksmith come by this evening and do emergency changes of all the locks. She's there now waiting to hand off new keys to mamishka.

OUCH!!! that sucks... but why were the keys there? (sorry, doesnt seem logical)... also, it would be loads cheaper to change the locks yourselves...

The lockbox containing the keys was kept out in the carriage house because we needed to keep the keys somewhere Dara could easily access them. We had kept them in the main house before while we were living there, but well, we don't live there anymore, so we had to take them out of that space.

I was wondering the same thing, since the carriage house isn't terribly secure. Perhaps in the future you should keep the keys in my apartment or the other half of Point 8? Those doors at least have real locks on them, so that way the box can be accessible to you and not to baddies.

Well, Dara's wound up moving the keys up here--which will seem to do us for now. But thanks for the suggestion! :)

Yes,having a break-in sucks big green ones..but at least nothing was damaged. The expense of lock replacement(I've done this...twice so far)is a pain,but at least no one was hurt,or anything like that. Years ago,while living in a duplex,my neighbor broke in to an attached shed and got my big-ass 60 amp battery charger(I had stencilled the words "Big Ass Battery Charger" on the side,and covered it in stickers. Very recognizable) and some of my tools..what made it bad was I had helped the bastard jump-start his car with it..that's how he knew I had it..Reporting such is virtually a waste of time,as I found out. The good news is they evicted(none too delicately) the waste-of-oxygen out three days later..
Even worse is to have to replace locks because your own family has the habit of "borrowing" things-without asking,and when you're not at home(never found out how they got a key to the place...).Scott

Yeah, we're grateful that Dara noticed what happened when she did. Nothing else was taken or damaged that Dara saw.

Sorry to hear your family seems to be annoying on a number of levels, though.
