alg posted this excellent link to a gentleman's blog entry about fanfic and the issues of copyright involved therein. The comments are especially good reading, involving some nice, rational discussion about the matter at large. Check it out!
Nobody mentioned _my_ reason for starting to write fanfic, though, which was that I was reading a book that had a fantastic universe, really cool characters, and abysmal writing, and thought "dude, I can do this better."
Bit big-headed of me at the time and I'm a lot more realistic about my writing ability now, but there it is ;)
*snicker* There is, I must admit, some level of "geez, I can do better than that" motivating my own desire to write. ;) I've read some godawful things that have managed to make print, after all!
And I can't say this didn't motivate me to some degree in the last few years I was still writing Pern fanfic. I certainly decided that the version of Pern our club was writing about was a lot more interesting than the Pern in the actual novels.
