On celebrity crushes
Feb. 12th, 2005 12:57 pmSince this meme amuses me, here are mine, both 'cartoon' and 'flesh-and-blood characters', in no particular order. Yes, this list is way longer than five. This is what I get for having led a pretty solitary childhood and adolescence. :) Note also that the vast majority of these, at least in the cases of the flesh-and-blood characters, were focused on the characters rather than on the actual actors.
1) Practically any character played by Elvis in any of his movies that I watched as a kid, as well as Elvis himself, and never mind his being deceased.
2) Speed Racer.
3) Mark, leader of G-Force, on Battle of the Planets.
4) Lion-O on Thundercats.
5) Zor in the Second Robotech War, and also the main male lead character in the Third Robotech War, whose name unfortunately eludes me; it's been a while since I looked at any Robotech. I list them both on this item because same cartoon. ;)
6) Apollo, played by Richard Hatch, the original Battlestar Galactica.
7) Captain Crane, played by David Hedison, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.
8) Major Don West, played by Mark Goddard, Lost in Space.
9) MacGyver, played by Richard Dean Anderson.
10) Remington Steele, played by Pierce Brosnan.
11) B.J. McKay, played by Greg Evigan, on B.J. and the Bear.
12) Automan, played by damned if I remember who, on the short-lived series of the same name.
13) Bennu, played by Judson Scott, on the even more short-lived The Phoenix.
14) And okay, yeah, fine, I'll admit it, I liked Michael Knight on Knight Rider. Please be gentle with your mocking. ;)
Okay, and now let's talk current crushes. These days, I'm way more focused on actual people. One of the advantages of being a grownup, I suppose, though there are certain characters that still slay me. :)
1) Strongbow in Elfquest.
2) Elvis, who endures despite being deceased, because, well, ELVIS.
3) Russell Crowe in general, and his portrayals of Cort in The Quick and the Dead, Jack Aubrey in Master and Commander, and SID in Virtuosity in particular.
4) Harrison Ford in general, and Han Solo and Indiana Jones in particular.
5) Pierce Brosnan, though Remington Steele remains far and away my favorite character of his.
6) Great Big Sea, who are, granted, a group rather than individuals, but collective ability to slay Anna with fabulous music counts. ;) Also, Alan Doyle in particular for unbelievable charisma and his voice, Séan McCann for his voice, and Bob Hallett for ability to play practically every instrument in the world, which is automatic swoon points by itself.
In conclusion, yeah, I'm pretty much a swoonish fangirl to this day. ;)

2) Spike, played by James Marsters, same.
3) Malcolm Reynolds, played by Nathan Fillion, Firefly.
4) Jack Aubrey in the novels by Patrick O'Brian, who gets special mention even aside from his having been played by Russell Crowe, because I knew I was going to like this guy from the first paragraph of Master and Commander.
5) Captain James T. Kirk, played by William Shatner. Which technically counts as both an adolescent and a current crush, because he was the first character who taught me that hazel eyes can in fact be swoonable. ;)

4) Lion-O on Thundercats.
I forgot Cheetara on my list... (figured it would be too weird... and also, to an extent, Lion-O -::snarf snaaaaaaaarffffff::)
While I'm at it, might as well throw Shee-Ra and Teela (from the HeMan series) in the bag)
13) Bennu, played by Judson Scott, on the even more short-lived The Phoenix.
He also played Joachim (aide to Khan Noonian Singh) in Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084726/).
::major droolage:: I'd do him if he were real... ::looks around innocently::

Date: 2005-02-13 07:59 pm (UTC)Yes, I know. He was in fact Khan's son, as I recall. But I wasn't actively crushing on Judson Scott--just his character Bennu. :)
David Hasselhoff
Date: 2005-02-14 08:45 pm (UTC)I mean the really funny part is that I always found him a bit annoying, and not particularly handsome actually.
But when I was a kid, my older sister Joanie had a thing for him I guess... I think he was previously on The Young & the Restless, or maybe some other soap opera.
And so when Knight Rider came out, my sister of course pressured me to watch it right from the get-go. So then I got into it, of course.
And then years later, I had occasion to watch early Baywatch episodes.
So then I had this friend who just thought I was so funny, apparently, when he found out I was familiar with Baywatch... he became fixated with my faux obsession.
And even went so far as to embellish some jokes I'd made in the course of an "interview" - you see I didn't know I was being interviewed. haha.
The details are here:
Watermelon Punch, the Blog - 17 Dec 2004 | Nostalgia Boulevard (root around in old funny junk) (http://www.watermelonpunch.com/blog/archives/002237.php)
This same old friend had once sent me a CD of David Hasselhoff... and signed it himself, as if he was David Hasselhoff cooing at me or whatnot. It was pretty funny. I still have the CD somewhere. It had this cover of Baby, Baby, Fallin' in Love on it. hehe.
Re: David Hasselhoff
Date: 2005-02-14 09:46 pm (UTC)I have had only brief fleeting exposure to his musical endeavors--just enough to know that he was pursuing music, and that he was quite popular in Europe. But I am not in a position to issue an opinion on whether or not he is a decent musician. :) (And given that I'm a raving fan of 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, which is headed up by an actor, I am absolutely NOT in a position to chastise anybody for liking David Hasselhoff's music!)
Quite funny that your friend was giving you hell about it, though. ^_^
Re: David Hasselhoff
Date: 2005-02-14 11:05 pm (UTC)At any rate, he doesn't have a bad voice, certainly.
But all his songs, and particularly the original songs, on the CD I have - are like pop synth... very bubble gum.
I think he sang a duet in a song with his wife in Knight Rider if I recall - something about a bird - on the episode that she guest starred on - think it was a 2-parter or something.
Man, how do I remember such things?
Maybe I do unconsciously have a thing for him. haha!!
NOT!
Re: David Hasselhoff
Date: 2005-02-16 03:48 am (UTC)And GAH, I think I remember something about his wife showing up on Knight Rider too, but damned if I can nail it down. This is probably for the best. ;)
Of course, I may be mixing it up in my brain with Pierce Brosnan's wife showing up on Remington Steele, which I was watching at about the same time. So.
Re: David Hasselhoff
Date: 2005-02-16 04:46 am (UTC)But before that - my first exposure to him singing was on that episode of Knight Rider. With his wife. A duet for the episode - though I can't remember why or in what context of the episode they would've been singing a duet. Maybe her character was a singer? I have a vague sense that the episode involved him falling in love with her (the characters) - but that for some reason they couldn't be together. Like maybe she was in the witness protection programme or something.
My second exposure to him singing was watching CNN when the Berlin Wall came down. He sang on a catwalk over the crumbled & destroyed Berlin Wall, from what I remember.
And then of course he sang the end theme on Baywatch... That's the song that's mentioned in that zine. (The song that plays during the credits at the end.) At least it was the case in 1991 - which is when I watched it.
I have absolutely no recollection of Pierce Brosnan's wife being on Remington Steele... Was she even an actress? For some reason I thought she wasn't. I'm talking about his late wife - the one who died fairly young. (I don't even know who he's married to now.) I'm not sure if she died before or after Remington Steele ended.
David Hasselhoff's wife was still on a soap opera when Knight Rider was on the air. But I'm not sure which soap she was on. I don't think it was the same soap that he was on... And I'm pretty sure he was on Young & the Restless, because that's the only soap opera I ever knew my sister Joanie to have watched.
I know because I was forced to watch it during the summers in the 70s & early 80s... pretty much because it was just on at lunch time every day. But I honestly don't remember David Hasselhoff being on there. Then again, I never really paid very close attention.
However, I have been creeped out from time to time, when I have in recent years happened to see a television set with Young & the Restless on (like in a hospital waiting room, etc.) - and I've actually recognized the actors and the characters names. Some of those people have been on that show for 30 years! And I've thought how very strange it must be to watch a show for 30 years with the same characters... and how it must be even more bizarre to be an actor working on the same show, as the same character, for 30 years!
Re: David Hasselhoff
Date: 2005-02-17 03:33 am (UTC)It sounds as if the Knight Rider episode you remember might be Let It Be Me. Ah, the things you can dig up with judicious searches on tvtome.com. :)
I never got into soap operas--but
Re: David Hasselhoff
Date: 2005-02-17 07:33 am (UTC)And yeah when I looked at that episode thingy you linked - I saw the name "Stevie" and instantly remembered more about the episode. haha!! And now I remember, I didn't really care for the episode. I think my sister was into it. But I much preferred the episodes where there was a lot of action with the car. haha. (I was a young tomboy at the time remember... and I certainly wasn't interested in the sappy angles at the time. haha.)
"One wonders how well the writers can keep finding new stuff to write about."
I don't think they do! haha.
Though I have a friend who used to watch General Hospital (maybe she still does but she hasn't mentioned it in awhile), and she's mentioned some of the stories on the show... stuff I would definitely categorize in the supernatural or sci-fi categories. Before this friend told me about this, I didn't think soap operas went in for those sorts of areas. But I guess a soap opera as old as that has had to go outside the scope. haha.
Well, of course I know about Dark Shadows (I even have a hand-me-down board game)... both my sisters watched that show after school in the 60s. I've seen some episodes myself. But that show was specifically made as a supernatural soap opera. I don't remember anything supernatural or sci-fi-ish going on in The Young & the Restless when I saw it as a kid.
Re: David Hasselhoff
Date: 2005-03-14 04:06 pm (UTC)The character Felicia did have an accent, yes. Though apparently Mr. Brosnan's first wife was in fact Australian. She didn't do much besides those guest shots on Steele, either.
Me, I'm less into celebrity gossip per se and more just extra aware of such little informational tidbits when they pertain to celebrities I like. E.g., Mr. Brosnan. E.g., Mr. Crowe. E.g., the boys of Great Big Sea. :)
Heh. I was just old enough, while watching Knight Rider, to be duly impressed by all the shiny flashy thingies on the car's control panel but starting to get interested in the sappier side angles. I have this niggling memory of being vaguely irritated that Michael did not in fact wind up romantically linked with the brown-haired chick who was part of the cast as well. Hee.
As for supernatural/sci-fi soap opera... well, I've seen examples of such in spoofs way more than I have in actual soap operas, but you're right, I can't think of a single example aside from Dark Shadows where that general genre was built in from day one as part of the show.
Re: David Hasselhoff
Date: 2005-03-14 04:27 pm (UTC)About the woman at the "headquarters" on Knight Rider... I think I was impressed by the fact that she wasn't romantically involved with "Michael". In other words, I think I was, at that age, happy that she was kind of like in authority... and not a fluff target or whatever. Know what I mean? I think because I seem to remember 'Michael' kind of flirting with her to try & manipulate her for what he wanted (you know what I mean), and she never fell for it - which I kind of was like "YEAH!!" haha.
Anyway, I should mention the television series Babylon 5 now... Because that was a sci-fi soap opera, definitely.
Of course the boyfriend I lived with at the time it was on... He was the one who was all excited when it premiered, and got me into it - and I LOVED that show. But when I remarked that it was a soap opera, he'd correct me and say "SERIAL". haha.
I mean, like The X-Files had a serial element to it... But it was not "A Serial" - not like a soap opera. But Babylon 5 was definitely a soap opera type serial.
I don't think that's a bad thing, anyway.
Plenty of men watch General Hospital & the like, after all. And tons of people love soap operas. So I don't get the stigma... Especially now that there's a cable soap channel that re-airs daytime soaps at night, and plenty of people work different shifts, and plenty of people have VCRs to record when they're not home... so there's not even the "home during the day" thing you can throw out there anymore.
tv fangirl
Date: 2005-02-14 08:45 pm (UTC)Nigel Bennett when he was on the tv series Forever Knight. Which I started watching during that same time I watched Baywatch - however, when I moved, changed shifts, and then even got cable, I had discontinued watching Baywatch, but continued watching Forever Knight. In fact and to this day, I'll still see any movie he's in... A few months ago I saw Post Impact just because he was in it, and I actually thought it was 10 times better than The Day After Tomorrow.
I once met a woman on-line - really cool lady who I believe ran his fan club or something. But man, she mentioned a few things about the real guy... you know, the actor Nigel Bennett. And I was like, no no, I don't want to know!
I'm generally like that - in that I'm not your average "fan" type... I don't want to know about these people. They can have their own lives to themselves, I'm just not interested!
Not that she ever said anything bad about that actor... But in the past people have met other famous people and told me not so flattering things about them, and I could've done without knowing, because it kind of ruined things.
And I did have a thing for Keith Szarabajka on The Equalizer. I was just mentioning to
And I said to her, "I just can't imagine getting worked up about Night Court being released on DVD." hahaha. I mean, the thought of me sitting here now, in 2005, watching old episodes of a show about a judge with rubber chickens, starring Markie Post & John Laroquette, would just make me want to get in the bathtub with razor blades. hahaha!
On that thread, someone mentions watching The Greatest American Hero via Netflix. hehe. I have to admit, I did watch that show when I was a kid. I could probably sing the theme song still, duly off-key. hahaha. But I just can't imagine renting the dvds.
My own Netflix queue is full of CSI and Monk episodes that I haven't seen yet.
I don't actually watch television, and I don't have cable - and I have poor television reception. But I wound up getting hooked on CSI because of the whole visine on nipples myth (http://www.watermelonpunch.com/blog/archives/000037.php) thing, I felt compelled to research. heh.
Re: tv fangirl
Date: 2005-02-14 09:39 pm (UTC)I think we're on similar wavelengths when it comes to what one should and should not know about one's object of fannish crushes. :) For example, despite my being a raving Elvis fan, I would feel weird setting foot in Graceland. Part of me would think it's almost too commercial somehow, too instrusive. As long as my lads keep putting out good movies and good music every so often, I'm good with them being over there somewhere being handsome and talented. Up close and personal, they get scary! ;)
Pierce Brosnan
Date: 2005-02-14 08:45 pm (UTC)But the best ever movie he's ever been in, in my opinion, was The Thomas Crown Affair. And not just because the movie uses a Nina Simone song, either! haha. I absolutely LOVE that movie.
I found out my sister Marie actually really loved that movie too.
The thing about my over 2 decades long fascination with Pierce Brosnan though... Is that I've never had a crush on him... it's that I wanted to be him!!! Kind of odd really, though maybe not so odd since I was still a tomboy kid when I first started watching Remington Steele and started idolizing him.
Re: Pierce Brosnan
Date: 2005-02-14 09:33 pm (UTC)And I don't find your wanting to be him odd at all. I mean, one of my favorite roleplay characters--Julian on AetherMUSH, who I have adapted for one of the novels I'm working on as we speak--was cast as Mr. Brosnan in my brain. :D
Re: Pierce Brosnan
Date: 2005-02-14 11:09 pm (UTC)But it's a hard thing to explain to people... People just assume I have the hots for Pierce Brosnan. And well, sure he's handsome & all. But my fascination was never quite like that.
Are you SERIOUS about the sequel?????? Where did you hear this?? Are they filming? When do they start? When is it due?
