Return of the King with 11 nominations, Master and Commander with 10. I am pleased. I am very pleased.

Even if Mr. Crowe is not up for Best Actor again this year. I love Russell dearly, but even I have to admit he was not stretching his formidable talents to play Jack Aubrey. I am, however, miffed that Paul Bettany is not up for Best Supporting Actor! Because he was a WONDERFUL Maturin!

I am equally miffed that Sean Astin is not up for Best Supporting Actor for Sam. Because "I can't carry it for you, Mr. Frodo, but I can carry you!" *sniffle*

On the other hand, I'm also amazed and charmed that Johnny Depp is actually up for Best Actor for Captain Jack Sparrow. :D I mean, "Buh-HUH?" He was amazing, but a fluffy flick like Pirates of the Caribbean scoring that nomination and several others as well?

So half of me wants to, as per usual, ask the people in charge of Oscar nominations WTF they're smoking, and the other half wants to ask if I can have some. ;)

That's the problem with being in a movie with an ensemble cast -- who do you (as the studio) support for best actor? Elijah? Viggo? Ian? Supporting actor -- Sean? Orlando? John Rhys-Davies? Bernard Hill? Etc. etc. Etc.

Sean was robbed. :P He should've at *least* gotten nominated.

I'm considering starting up a fund to collect money to have an Oscar made for him anyway. From the fans. :)

i think that Sean's performance as Sam really was what YANKED my heartstrings out and made me go thru SO MANY tissues during RotK!
it's a travesty that he wasn't nominated! TRAVESTY
at least this time Peter Jackson was recognized!

Oh, *I* agree with you -- but the studio apparently decided very precisely not to make one character "more important" than the others by hyping the actor for an award, and without hype, no nominations.

Me too. As the PvP online guy said, "Don't MAKE me roll for initiative."

Fluffy as it was, Depp was incredible :) I hope he wins.

He completely blew me away, and I was already a fan. So yes - fluffy or not, I'm behind him ALL the way! He carried that movie. He was incredible. Heard he's playing the title role in a Tim Burton version of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory... can you even imagine? (If anyone else were directing, and if anyone else were playing WW, I would start getting the burning pitch ready, but with that combination, I think it might actually *not* be total blasphemy to remake that film.)

Yeah, I can see that. I mean, who can top Gene Wilder? Well, maybe, just maybe, Depp can do it.

I'd like to see them go back to the book for the remake, rather than just remaking the movie. Because of the one f-up that I can't forgive the movie, geek that I am. Charlie should *never* have drunk the fizzy pop...or broken the rules in any way...and still won at the end. But still. What *will* Tim Burton do with the Oompa-Loompas???

I firmly believe that Johnny Depp could play a woman, and I'd be completely taken in.

He's just that good.

And you just know his Willy Wonka would be completely different, and just as _right_.

Did you also notice that the three running for Best Make-Up could also run for Longest Titles.
