Return of the King with 11 nominations, Master and Commander with 10. I am pleased. I am very pleased.
Even if Mr. Crowe is not up for Best Actor again this year. I love Russell dearly, but even I have to admit he was not stretching his formidable talents to play Jack Aubrey. I am, however, miffed that Paul Bettany is not up for Best Supporting Actor! Because he was a WONDERFUL Maturin!
I am equally miffed that Sean Astin is not up for Best Supporting Actor for Sam. Because "I can't carry it for you, Mr. Frodo, but I can carry you!" *sniffle*
On the other hand, I'm also amazed and charmed that Johnny Depp is actually up for Best Actor for Captain Jack Sparrow. :D I mean, "Buh-HUH?" He was amazing, but a fluffy flick like Pirates of the Caribbean scoring that nomination and several others as well?
So half of me wants to, as per usual, ask the people in charge of Oscar nominations WTF they're smoking, and the other half wants to ask if I can have some. ;)

Date: 2004-01-27 09:35 am (UTC)Elijah... I want to say he should be up for Best Actor but I'm also having a hard time selling myself on it. Possibly because the engaging Mr. Wood does after all spend all of RotK wandering around looking tragic, and that, too, is not exactly a stretch of acting ability.
Ian... I think he actually had a more compelling performance in FotR, compared to his performance in RotK. In the first movie he had a lot more presence and power; in the third, he's just one of the ensemble.
On the other hand, Sean for Best Supporting is a really clear choice for me. :) Orlando and John had much reduced presences in the third flick, whereas Sean was all over the place and really obviously driving the Sam/Frodo half of the story.

it's a travesty that he wasn't nominated! TRAVESTY
at least this time Peter Jackson was recognized!

Date: 2004-01-27 10:02 am (UTC)Hrmph. Well, RotK had damn well BETTER get Best Picture, that's all I have to say about it, and I say this even as the Russell Crowe fangirl who is also very pleased to see M&C in that lineup too. ;)

Date: 2004-01-27 10:51 am (UTC)I'd like to see them go back to the book for the remake, rather than just remaking the movie. Because of the one f-up that I can't forgive the movie, geek that I am. Charlie should *never* have drunk the fizzy pop...or broken the rules in any way...and still won at the end. But still. What *will* Tim Burton do with the Oompa-Loompas???

And you just know his Willy Wonka would be completely different, and just as _right_.
