Friday night, my birthday, was pleasant even aside from being ill.
spazzkat and
ssha came over to hang out; the former presented me with a $40 gift card for Barnes and Noble that I greatly look forward to spending, and the latter gave me a Christmas ornament that she'd actually intended as a Christmas gift, but hey. It's quite cute, a little bear in a stocking that she painted herself.
I am still a little too ill to actually go spend the card, though. I kind of want to do it today, but while I am feeling on the mend, I half-suspect I shouldn't spend the energy. I have had it suggested to me that I should just go online and spend it at B&N's website, but that smacks of lameness when there is a B&N right down the hill from my very house. ;) Besides, if I actually go down to the store, I get the satisfaction of being able to handle the books and wander around looking at this book or that before I decide, and I can buy them RIGHT THEN as opposed to having to wait for the things to be delivered.
solarbird regretfully informed me that the actual gift she'd gotten me is late because Amazon.com is being lame delivering it. So she wound up giving me an adorable plushy toy elephant that she'd gotten me for Valentine's Day, instead. It is lap-sized, and soft and squeezable, and has a big fat curly trunk with a pink end curled up, and big fat floppy ears that are the same shade of pink on the inside, and big black beady eyes, and two cute little plush tusks. Dara has dubbed him Tusky McFlathead until we come up with a better name, but I kind of like that one. ;)
Dara also made me a cake, which was a bit of an adventure as it was supposed to be an ice cream cake, but the ice cream misbehaved when she was trying to make it set. So she wound up whipping it up together with some cream or something and making it be frosting instead, and that was pretty nummy, as was the jelly used to be the center of the cake.
mamishka joined us after her Friday stint at the Home Show, and gave me a card with a really cute alligator popping out of a cake. ^_^
The rest of the weekend has mostly been about the lying around on the couch and being sick. I've been lying around enough this week that my back has been cranky about it, but there's not much I can do about that at the moment. :( I've been trying various exercises to stretch my back out, but there's only so much energy I've got right now.
To try to keep from going buggy from boredom, I've written and I've played Nethack a lot. And Slashem, as well, the best-known, longest-lived Nethack derivative. I even installed the latter on lodestone, just to have it easily handy. It's weird bopping back and forth between the two. They look ostensibly like the same game until you start noticing differences in how each game handles stuff--e.g., base armor classes for the Rogue, one of my character classes of choice. And I've seen at least one level so far that is unique to Slashem.
And I've finished off May the Best Man Die, the third in a mystery series written by a local author and set in Seattle. This is the series I've mentioned on my journal before, the one in the "unlikely person who has no ostensible business solving crimes doing so" subgenre of mysteries. The heroine du jour for this one is a wedding planner chick. I'd bitched about something that came up with the love interest in the previous book; she did sort of redeem what came up with said love interest in this one, though in other ways it played out in an unfortunately predictable fashion, so while I don't regret having read it, it also didn't knock my socks off.
My little brother called me last night, to wish me a belated happy b-day and to just chat about family goings-on. All of his family are doing well, and the new baby, Michelle Lynn, is in good shape. I am informed that she popped out tiny, 5 pounds and I believe 9 ounces. He mentioned that the hospital web site was supposed to have a picture up of said child, but I couldn't find her. Ah well!
I told Marc about the current state of affairs with our trying to sell 5026--Dara is in fact going to show it to TWO, count 'em, TWO prospective buyers today, so this could get really interesting really fast if we're lucky. I like the words 'competing bids'. And Marc heartily recommended corrective laser surgery for both Dara and me since we're both nearsighted; Marc's wife had it done on her and Marc says the procedure has paid for itself in the last couple of years that they haven't had to spend on eye exams and contacts and the like. We'll have to revisit this concept later, maybe, when we have more monex.
On the agenda for today: more lying around, more Nethack vs. Slashem, and if I get really inspired, trying to finish the book. Stupid flu/cold/whatever.

Date: 2004-01-25 01:47 pm (UTC)I know y'all are younger than me, but I'm not sure exactly how much younger. If you're anywhere near 40, you might reconsider.

Date: 2004-01-25 03:34 pm (UTC)One thing to note on the laser surgery is that it's only guaranteed 20/20 up to a certain level; after that, you're not guaranteed any results (which is why I don't do it...I don't want to STILL have to wear glasses after forking over for surgery; they won't even guarantee 20/60 for me (I'm 20/850 in terms of nearsightedness)).
Good luck selling the other house!

Date: 2004-01-26 02:43 am (UTC)A friend of mine had hers done about 3 years ago, and they didn't correct to 20/20. She still has to wear glasses for reading, for driving at night, and when her eyes are tired- they're not coke-bottle-bottom glasses anymore though, so she considers it money and risk well spent.
