Seeing the title Battlestar Galactica in the show lineup on our Tivo.

Seeing a female Starback on said show.

Seeing an Apollo who was, amazingly enough, even whinier than the original and not nearly as cute.

Seeing Baltar getting hot Cylon nookie.

All in all, this mini-series version of Battlestar Galactica feels too Sci-Fi Channel and not enough cheesy Battlestar Galactica goodness!

I knew going in it wouldn't be the original series - but I like it, big-time. Already watched the first half three times in a row, catching a lot more details I hadn't heard the first time through. (I won't post spoilers in case others reading this haven't seen it yet.)

I haven't seen the original show in ages, which I suspect helped on the enjoyment level. Warm fuzzy memories of the show are tempered with 20+ years of memories, and were originally viewed through a heavy dose of preteen hormones. Re-watching it as an adult, it would probably suck - Galactica 1980 did when sci-fi ran a few episodes last summer.

*giggle* Galactica 1980 sucked the first time around! ;D

Hell, this is also me acknowledging that the original Galactica wasn't exactly high art either, but still it had this certain cheesy charm about it.

This new one... there are bits and pieces that worked for me, but even with giving allowances for this being a new version I just had a hard time figuring out why to LIKE most of the characters.

I DID like "We can't use the port bay!" "Why not?" "It's a gift shop." Snicker.

I almost liked Chick Starbuck. But the problem was that while she seemed to be one of the best characters in this cast, she just wasn't STARBUCK! As I commented last night to the Murkworkians, Dirk Benedict had a certain smarmy charm about him, which was totally missing from this chick. She had the gambling, the cigar, the short ruffly blonde hair, and the disrespect for authority, but not the flirting with everything that moves.

On the other hand, I then told myself, if a woman was portraying the same smarmy charm that Dirk Benedict put into Starbuck, she'd get perceived as a slut.

Also, I REALLY REALLY REALLY didn't like the telegraphing in big neon lights future boinkage between this Apollo and Starbuck. WRONG WRONG WRONGITY WRONG WRONG WRONG.

I thought Chick Boomer was Asian-looking, myself?

I waffled about the real names vs. callsigns thing. I kind of liked it but on the other hand, giving everybody first names and last names really made the culture of the Colonies start feeling too Earth-y. So did all the 'normal-looking' clothes, too. What this tells me is 'we have no wardrobe budget'! ;)

And OH THE BABYLON FIVENESS of the command crew uniforms.

Oh, chick Boomer was Asian? I got all the pilots mixed up several times. Probably because I was watching it out of the corner of my eye as I played Everquest. My partner was wondering what the hell was going on, because my character would come to a dead stop as I would turn from the keyboard and start shrieking at the television.

Yeah, she was an Asian chick. (Though she looked only part Asian to me, that specific actress.)

I was less bothered by Boomer being a woman and Tigh being white than by Apollo and Starbuck just being WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG! Especially the part where future boinkage is telegraphed in huge neon lights! *BZZZT!* WRONG!

(I may be wrong about the telegraphing, but given that there were no less than three gratuitous sex scenes in Part 1, I don't THINK I am.)

I mean, Apollo was a whiny, angsty asshole a good part of the time all throughout the original series, but he did at least have some redeeming qualities! So far this new Apollo just seems to be even whinier than the original, which is rather impressive a feat.

Oh yeah, I was totally all over swooning after Richard Hatch. :) He may be a whiny, bitter asshole NOW in real life, but at least then he was very good at looking broody and angsty and noble all at once. ;)

#9: Constant taking turns as to which of them will crash-land on a previously undiscovered alien planet (where the inhabitants are all surprisingly human) this week insures neither will have handy getaway Viper for secret romantic escapades away from the Galactica.
