So I'm doing the web page for the Pern group I used to be in and which wants to resurrect itself, and I want to buy it a domain name, telgar5.org. However, when I go to the site I bought annathepiper.org from, i.e., Network Solutions, it claims that telgar5.org is not available. But I can't get it to come up in a web browser, nor can I ping it or whois it or nslookup it. Same thing happened when I tried telgarweyr.org. Does anybody know any reason why Network Solutions might be confused on the matter of .org domains?

I don’t think NetSol handles .org domains anymore.

I tried to find a good, all-registrars whois server, and Google suggested a couple of possibilities — Better Whois and Allwhois — but at the moment neither one actually returns any result when I try doing a lookup on grumer.org.

OK, it seems to be working now. BetterWhois says telgar5.org is available.

Wait, now it’s just spinning forever and giving no result again. Man, you just can’t get decent whois service anymore.

And I just got Allwhois to tell me that telgarweyr.org is available.

Anyway, you should’t be using NetSol; they’re expensive and crappy. I’ve been getting better service for less money from Dotster and 000Domains.

GANDI is only 12 euros per year, and you can do 3 year terms

(which is probably not a bad idea seeing as how the dollar is probably going to fall a bit against the euro)

they take credit card payments, so the VISA/Mastercard folks deal with the all of the exchange issues.

in other words, no, unless you have a really strange credit card.

I just came across something interesting about VeriSign (http://chris.quietlife.net/archives/000296.html)...
