Okay, I'm officially confused...
Sep. 14th, 2003 01:08 pmSo I'm doing the web page for the Pern group I used to be in and which wants to resurrect itself, and I want to buy it a domain name, telgar5.org. However, when I go to the site I bought annathepiper.org from, i.e., Network Solutions, it claims that telgar5.org is not available. But I can't get it to come up in a web browser, nor can I ping it or whois it or nslookup it. Same thing happened when I tried telgarweyr.org. Does anybody know any reason why Network Solutions might be confused on the matter of .org domains?

Date: 2003-09-14 01:29 pm (UTC)I tried to find a good, all-registrars whois server, and Google suggested a couple of possibilities — Better Whois and Allwhois — but at the moment neither one actually returns any result when I try doing a lookup on grumer.org.

Date: 2003-09-14 07:14 pm (UTC)Apparently now the .Org domain is being administered by the folks at pir.org, and you have to go there to do whois lookups on .org now. But buying .org domain names in theory is supposed to be still working the same, so there seems to be at least a little shakiness between the PIR folks and the registrars.
