Third cool thing of the day
Jul. 19th, 2002 04:28 pmReading Post Captain, the second of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey & Maturin books, and on page 213 I find the sailors singing the song from which Great Big Sea's "Rant and Roar" is descended!
Clearly I'm going to be having GBS ditties rolling through my head the whole time I'm watching Far Side of the World, when it comes out. ;)
We'll rant and we'll roar like true British sailors
We'll range and we'll roam over all the salt seas,
Until we strike soundings in the Channel of old England:
From Ushant to Scilly 'tis thirty-five leagues.
We hove our ship to when the wind was south-west, boys,
We hove our ship to for to strike soundings clear,
Then we filled our main-topsail and bore right away, boys,
And right up the Channel our course we did steer.
Clearly I'm going to be having GBS ditties rolling through my head the whole time I'm watching Far Side of the World, when it comes out. ;)
The tune is different, too!

Date: 2002-08-10 12:05 am (UTC)Not that I know of. We have a couple LJ friends in common: agrumer and mamishka. (Maybe others, but those two I know about.)
I read some of your recent posts based on agrumer's comment yesterday and decided to add you to my friends list. Hope you don't mind.
