Third cool thing of the day

Reading Post Captain, the second of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey & Maturin books, and on page 213 I find the sailors singing the song from which Great Big Sea's "Rant and Roar" is descended!

We'll rant and we'll roar like true British sailors
We'll range and we'll roam over all the salt seas,
Until we strike soundings in the Channel of old England:
From Ushant to Scilly 'tis thirty-five leagues.

We hove our ship to when the wind was south-west, boys,
We hove our ship to for to strike soundings clear,
Then we filled our main-topsail and bore right away, boys,
And right up the Channel our course we did steer.

Clearly I'm going to be having GBS ditties rolling through my head the whole time I'm watching Far Side of the World, when it comes out. ;)

*giggle* I know, you'd sung it to me before as I recall... isn't it a far more minor-y tune in the English version? With more jumps between notes?

Um, "they" are making a movie of Far Side of the World? I read all the Aubrey/Maturin novels.

Hi! Do I know you? :) And yes, an Aubrey/Maturin movie is being made, starring Russell Crowe as Aubrey and Paul Bettany as Maturin, and it's due to be out next summer. To the best of my knowledge the working title is Far Side of the World, though I do not yet know whether or not they're using that book's plot or the plot for Master and Commander.

Not that I know of. We have a couple LJ friends in common: agrumer and mamishka. (Maybe others, but those two I know about.)
