I’m getting an iPhone! And celebrating with a contest!

So spazzkat has himself a shiny new iPhone 3GS, and has gone and given his old first-gen iPhone to solarbird. Dara futzed around with the device some last night to get it all set up and activated and stuff, and then let me play with it some to get the final bit of critical information I needed: i.e., could I use the virtual keyboard on the thing well enough to write on?

Survey says, YES. I quite liked the virtual keyboard that came in with the 3.0 version of the iPhone software, especially in landscape mode. This doesn’t leave much screen room, but that’s okay; for my purposes, all I really need is to be able to whip out a few paragraphs here and there (such as when I’m at a con or something), which I can then sync up onto my laptop later.

Knowing this, I stopped in the AT&T store this morning and ordered me a shiny new iPhone of my own. I asked for one of the 32G white ones, and the girl who rang me up said those are coming in pretty fast. So I should get the device sometime in the next few days–it may even come in before I get back from Disneyland!

And, folks, this is where you come in, because I also need to settle the vital question of what to name this incoming iPhone. Drop your suggestions in the comments! The strongest contenders will then go head to head in a poll.

To sweeten the deal, I will heretofore announce my very first author contest. The winner of the poll will get one free e-copy of Faerie Blood in the format of their choice (options: PDF, Mobi, or Microsoft Reader). Or, if you already own a copy of Faerie Blood, I’ll give you a copy of any Drollerie Press book of your choice from the Drollerie bookstore!

So spread the word far and wide, people, and start winging those suggestions at me! You have until Monday, when I get back from Disneyland, to submit your nominations for the poll!

ETA 4:47pm: A couple of quick addenda to stick in a couple of rules!

1. Multiple nominations will be allowed but I reserve the authorial right to allow only one nomination per person to get into the final actual poll.

2. If you’d like to endorse someone’s nomination, you may do so by dropping a comment in support of it wherever the nomination originally showed up (which is to say, angelakorrati.com, LJ, Dreamwidth, Facebook, or Twitter, since I doubt anybody’s actually reading this post from InsaneJournal or JournalFen). I've always liked Memoria, although I do realize it's not terribly original and has been used by Charles DeLint in 'Moonheart'. (Which is where I got it from, so...um...yeah. Not original, as I said.) If I can come up with something better I'll let you know.

Petalwing! Fits with existing naming structures, yet has the aspect of being portable and a bit flitty. :) Or some other preserver name if you prefer them. ;)

For the record, F'hlan's firelizards, at least after Sioll (which was the name of a son of mine and Dara's in an RPG), tended to be named after Elfquest soulnames of various characters, either canon or played by me on TM. His gold for example was named Neme, after Goodtree's soulname.

Mehlani's firelizards, aside from Holl who was named for a Northern Exposure character in honor of the hatching where she got him, were all named in honor of Indiana Jones characters or things. Rianet (Marion), Munki (the monkey), Enri (Henry Jones Sr.), Brodi (Marcus Brody), Elsi (Elsa from Last Crusade), Wili (Willie from Temple of Doom), and Arki (the spirits from the Ark, which is why Arki was always deeply, deeply scary, especially when she was proddy).

I vote for nameing it after one of the computers from a story that i'm sure no one here has ever read.

Arrakis, the phone computer. Or since it's an Apple product, Gallifrey, the MacinClock. Or a computer that was only mentioned once, Tattooine, which was used to IRC in episode 112.

I dunno, some folks reading my journal are pretty old-school with their SF, so it may not be wise to assume that nobody's read it but you. ;) For myself I have not, though I seem to recall hearing Arrakis mentioned in a Julia Ecklar song.

The only reference I have for Tatooine, one t, is Star Wars. What are you referencing with Tattooine, two t's?

You're WAY off... Yes, all three of those names are plannets from sci-fi stories, BUT that's not what i was refrancing. The main character in the story i was talking about had named all of his computers after planets. Those were just the three computers that had something in common with your phone.

Green is not out of the question if I find a suitably colored protective case for it! (Which I am told I ought to do so as to preserve its shiny goodness in as scratch-free a state as possible.)
