So I'd posted earlier about winning myself an ARC of Jessica Andersen's Dawnkeepers. This book finally showed up in the mail on Tuesday--two weeks after the book actually came out, so it's less an ARC and more an RC at this point. But I emailed her nonetheless to let her know that it had safely arrived and that I'd bumped it up to the top of my reading queue.

I also pointed her here so that she could see examples of my book review posts, and she came over and read a post or two, and then flung me more mail in delight--because she too is a Battlestar fan, and we were mutually very pleased to discover that we both could geek about this show for hours.

In the process of this she flung me a very interesting little theory that I must now share with you all!

That theory is this: Fifth Final Cylon Ellen will be reborn as the product of Tigh having gotten Caprica!Six pregnant.

I read this in her mail and my jaw dropped. Partly because I'd totally forgotten about that entire plot point, but partly also because it's sick and wrong and flat-out ZOMG that I totally would not put it past the BSG writers to have that very goal in mind.

In a warped way, it works for me. The Five have to have come from somewhere. Maybe they're the only Cylons who can breed? Maybe this is how they've actually managed to recreate themselves?

Um. Ew.

Just... no.
I'd not forgotten that plotpoint, but -gross-!

I am totally with you on the yuck train. Eww.

What happens to the Immortal and Everlasting Love Story of Ellen and Saul, then? I will not believe that the producers are pulling a Stephenie Meyer.

Especially as it's two Cylons. The Hera subplot certainly has been... shall we say... lacking? Not at all what it was advertised out to be.

I'll have to wait for SciFi Rewind... we missed the broadcast. :(

Is all good. We picked it up off of Hulu. (We got rid of our cable and DVR, being that everything we watch is now on Hulu.)

I've been thinking that the Five are replicated through generations of human breeding, possibly as an unused bit of DNA that under the right circumstances can take over the normal genetic reproduction process and produce an exact genetic duplicate. That explains why Tigh at least seems to have a background and to have aged--he was born and ages normally, just like the other Four. I can't quite figure out if there's a way to do this that is wholly consistent with the narrative, but it does seem consistent with the idea that Six could give birth to a new Ellen. For that matter, at least some of the supposed "hybrid" babies look more like members of the Five than their parents.

I also can't shake the conviction that somehow all humans are cylons, but that runs into problems with the various cylon detection technologies that have been used throughout the series. I think this bit of pseudoscience might just be a huge whole in the plot, as [livejournal.com profile] wrog suggests.

Nah, I still think humans create cylons who rebel and eventually become the new humans who create cylons. How you get certain differences between generations that always cycle I think is still undetermined but can be laid at the feet of the Third and Fourth Actors, who we have not yet seen directly. (First and Second being the Colonials and current Cylons, respectively.)

definition of "cylon" has gotten severely messed up IMHO. whatever it was that Tigh et al are remembering from 2000 years ago, it's not at all like the cylon society that we saw on Caprica a few seasons ago (where Sharon and Caprica!Six are celebrities and it's just the seven models...).

still missing some really important pieces of the puzzle. At this point, I'll be happy if it doesn't end up being like the last episode of The Prisoner.

Either way, it'll be interesting...

Unless they pull something totally off the wall. I could see it now...

"Starbuck! We're going to be late for patrol!" (Played by Richard Hatch, wearing the original series uniforms.Meanwhile, Dirk Benedict rolls out of the rack, groaning about a hangover and having the wierdest frakking dream...)

And there's a chimp in a robot dog suit. That would be awesome.

They did refer to the original series at least once, when they played the theme music over a funeral scene.

I'm sure Ellen is going to be an upload, i.e., if she shows up again (I put the odds at about 50-50 at this point). Anything else would require another of these fast-forward-n-months/years and, quite frankly, I don't think the series can afford any more of that.
