Y'all know this already, of course, but yay, back ahead of schedule! Here, have some linkage to celebrate.
I believe the correct word for this is "shiny".
Isn't
blackaire's forthcoming cover for Street Magic breaking some sort of Law of Urban Fantasy Cover Art by actually having two figures? Who changed the Cover Art Law when I wasn't looking? (Props to
mdhenry for sharing the goodness, though!)
And for the two or three of you out there who might not have actually seen it yet, the first full official trailer is out for the new Trek flick. I have to admit... I'm really rather geeking out about this now. From a worldbuilding standpoint I'm curious to see what they'll keep and what they'll change, and whether it is actually biologically possible for someone to play James T. Kirk and not channel William Shatner. Zachary Quinto looks like he's totally nailed Spock. And I want to see Simon Pegg being awesome as Scotty.
ETA 9:26pm: And in the admittedly cool even if it means your spam can follow you all the way to Mars kind of way, NASA is testing an early-stage interplanetary Internet.
Also, here, have a cat riding a Roomba!

Re: watched the trailer
Date: 2008-11-19 04:08 am (UTC)Eh, they're clearly going for harder-edged than TOS. I ain't going to hold that against them unless the movie actually sucks. And JJ Abrams does have a decent track record with Lost. (Plus, without going into rumors I've heard of spoilers, there's at least one thing that if true is going to be worth the entire price of admission for me. ;) )
Re: watched the trailer
Date: 2008-11-19 04:54 am (UTC)Now, that said?
1) Dude, Spock can totally get pissed off if suitably motivated. Hell, Kirk deliberately provoked him into nearly breaking him in half. The episode with the lotus spores, I think--
2) This is a much younger Spock than we'll have been used to seeing in TOS. One therefore presumes he hasn't gotten down his Vulcan control yet.
3) It took half a season for Nimoy to really get the portrayal of Spock down cold. First half season or so, Spock was way more emotive than we saw later. Which would be in keeping with him being more emotional and volatile when younger, if you want to try to find a canon explanation for that as opposed to "the Trek producers really didn't know what to do with Spock yet". ;)
Re: watched the trailer
Date: 2008-11-19 05:12 am (UTC)And, heh, yeah, 'fair nuff, "I don't want them messing with my beloved thing" is a reasonable reaction. :) I'm willing to give JJ Abrams the benefit of the doubt, though; see previous comments re: Lost.
(Although I will also reserve final judgment until some actual reviews come out, as well as, y'know, the movie. 'Cause the first trailer for Phantom Menace was good, too, and we totally didn't get the movie that thing advertised. ;) )

Anyhow. WHEEEEEEE!

Date: 2008-11-19 08:34 pm (UTC)Just looked up the Wikipedia page for the new flick. New Boy playing Kirk has been quoted as saying he's looked to Harrison Ford for inspiration. Okay, if he's inspired by Ford, he just got a few more points in my book. ;) (And this also answers the question of 'how do you play Kirk without channeling Shatner?')
'Cause really, as long as they get Kirk, Spock, and Bones reasonably correct, they can rearrange everything else in the movie as far as I'm concerned!

Date: 2008-11-22 11:45 pm (UTC)I suspect that what this may wind up actually meaning is that New!Kirk's brand of charm will be scruffier than Original!Kirk. Original!Kirk definitely lays in on thicker than oh, say, Solo. But not as much as Jack Harkness!
