And now, a Very Important Critical Vital question!

As I exulted in my previous post, thanks to my beloved solarbird and the made-entirely-of-Awesome spazzkat, my holiday present this year is going to be a shiny new (well, a shiny newly refurbished!) MacBook! Keeping in mind that a) it will be a black computer, b) Dara and I have a tradition of naming computers after Elfquest characters and objects, and c) who my various and sundry objets d'fandom affection are at the moment, I need some help picking out a good name for the box!

"Elvis" is disqualified on the grounds that my very first computer was named Elvis. Also disqualified are "Aron" (Elvis' middle name), "Garon" (the middle name of Elvis' twin brother), and "Newstar" (my current Windows laptop).

ETA 1:13pm: To address a few remarks noted in poll answers and comments, names of actual living persons are also disqualified, which counts out 'Alan', 'Doyle', 'Russell', 'Crowe', 'Harrison', 'Ford', and any other portions of names of persons over whom I have been known to swoon.

Other names which have come up in the comments or elsewhere which are of potential interest: 'Rayek', 'Ororo', 'Zoe', 'Martha', and 'Zuko' (as in, the prince in Avatar: The Last Airbender). If there is enough interest in any of these names I may do a second poll!

I vote Kaylee. Because it's so cute and easy to get along with that you'd suspect it would be just a toy, but then it turns out to be surprisingly competent and powerful.

Though I must also observe that janne, below, suggested 'Ororo' (Storm from the X-Men) because 'powerful, pretty, and black'. An argument which can be quite splendidly applied to Zoe from Firefly! Does this change your answer at all?

Solo. Because you'll be solo, i.e. alone if any problems with this thing arise... Or go to service. But there are not too much that could be advised with Mac's mlfunctions... and compatibility issues.

Compatibility is not a worry for me. The only thing I'll need it to do where compatibility might be a question, really, is saving things I write in a format compatible with potential agents and publishers. I intend to address this by installing OpenOffice, which saves out in Microsoft Word as well as RTF format. :)

Also, I am totally not worried about any potential problems. spazzkat, solarbird, and I are all technically inclined, and they've used the Macs they already have with great success. If mine throws anything at me, I'm fairly confident I'll be able to deal.

I made the suggestion of Sparrow to go with technoshaman's pirate theme. Also, Sparrow could be slightly linked with ElfQuest as relating to nature.

Heh, thanks for chiming in! "Sparrow" actually does have Elfquest connotations for me; it was the name I'd chosen for my character Rillwhisper's mother. :)

One of solarbird's earliest computers was named Rayek, it turns out, but she says that since that computer was never on the Net (and can't be, since it's a C128), she considers the name open. So yes, in theory, the box could be named Rayek!

And the idea of slapping XP on the box just so I can name it Two-Edge makes me laugh and laugh and laugh. But it also makes spazzkat cringe every time I mention it! ;) I think much will depend on how much I'll miss the few Windows-only games I have on my current system.

Lurker Morgan here, catching up on your journal after a long vacation which included the Browncoat Cruise (Awesome) and marching with the Mutant Enemy folks and meeting Joss (Doubly Awesome) and thanking him for Firefly and because of which my meeting my wife, Kikki (Priceless).

Curious about your thoughts on the last Harry Potter book.

Did you hear that Naomi Novik (sp?) will be at Norwescon? Have you read the current book? Did I miss that review?

Lastly, a couple of thoughts on a name for the Mac. I just got an Ipod and have been listening to a lot of GBS so my thoughts are with them and names from their music. Lukey, Gen. Taylor, Mary Mac, and lastly a nod to RC, Macsimus. Yeah, I'm a dork. :-)

Couple of tid bits. Joss was of course very personable, shy but engaging, and definitely listened after what I'm sure was a very tiring few hours. Also, while in San Diego we went to see the Rose which is moored 1/4 mile from the cruise ships. She's back to full sailing trim after being abused by the film crew and has been out getting her Coast Guard certification, or so the wife told me who is more plugged into that world than I.

I did indeed hear that naominovik will be at Norwescon! In fact, I heard it from solarbird, who is on the concom guest selection committee, and to whom I recommended Ms. Novik in the first place. ;> I did indeed also review the current book. It's a shorter review post than my previous ones for her, since I did it in keeping with the other review posts I've been doing this year.

*giggle!* It had not occurred to me to name the computer after GBS songs; "Mari-Mac" is very clever. As is "Macsimus". I shall consider these!

Hee, I was specifically thinking of characters I fangirl for in particular. Boomer and Six are both very cool, but I don't fangirl 'em. ;)

That said? Six would certainly be in the same theme as Winnowill for names of computers.

It's nice to have naming schemes, anyway; all my portables are named something starting with P (the iPhone is Ping, the Dell laptop was Packet, my old Powerbook was Pixel, my MacBook Pro is Pico...)

Two-Edge is still tempting, but going down in likelihood, I think! I haven't been able to convince myself that I have any need for the machine to dual-boot that won't be adequately addressed by any of the Windows machines in the house. (My current laptop, for example, not to mention its predecessor which mamishka is about to give me back to me, either of which would suffice for anything I really need to do on Windows.)

But I'm totally with you on the naming schemes thing!
