In "couldn't happen to a cooler set of novels" news,
naominovik has just announced that Peter Jackson has optioned the Temeraire novels. WOW. I mean, WOW. I will look forward to seeing Laurence and Temeraire come to life with great, great anticipation. :D
Man, now I'm going to spend the rest of the day trying to figure out who they might get to play Laurence, or if they'd find some previously unknown but swoonable British actor. And who would be the voice of Temeraire?

Date: 2006-09-12 03:47 pm (UTC)Y'know, having thought about it for, like, thirty seconds, I'd cast Daniel Craig as Laurence. Ted thinks he's a bit too old. Ted would cast Clive Owens, which I gotta say is a good choice, or James Purefoy (who played Prince Edward in "A Knight's Tale" and I've seen him in nothing else), the idea of which makes me go OMY TEH SEXAY. Purefoy is in fact older than Craig, but god damn. O.O

Date: 2006-09-12 03:51 pm (UTC)I am unfamiliar with Mr. Craig or Mr. Owens! And mostly unfamiliar with Mr. Purefoy, save that one of my beta readers mentioned him to me for the first time as the guy she'd envision playing one of my side characters. ;)
I get the overall impression that Laurence is in his thirties, neh? I don't think the books ever come right out and say. But if he's old enough to have made captain in the Navy, yet young enough to switch services and still be pretty adaptable, I'd ballpark him early thirties.

Date: 2006-09-12 03:59 pm (UTC)Clive Owen was the lead in "King Arthur", was the one who wasn't Jude Law in "Closer", and was the mastermind in "Inside Man". And oh, huh, in fact, he's also older than Daniel Craig.
Yeah, Laurence is in his thirties, I expect, and all three of those guys are either in their forties or close to it. Still, I think any of them would rock. However, I would settle for James Purefoy doing Temeraire's *voice*, because OMG that man has a beautiful, beautiful voice. And it's not as recognizeable as JEJ or any of the other Voices that get used.

Hrmm, if they made His Majesty's Dragon first I expect they'd have to get somebody to do "growing up Temeraire" at least for the first little bit of the film, or at least do some processing on whatever actor does his voice when he reaches adulthood. He is still a very young dragon, and needs to sound like it! But I think it'd be easier for a suitably talented voice actor to sound younger than it is for that actor to look younger. ;)

Date: 2006-09-12 06:43 pm (UTC)In fact, he's so good that I sat through this really awful B fantasy movie called 'Dragon Sword' because he was the lead. And he made it entirely bearable.
He's worth an IMDB just to see if there's any of his stuff you may've seen already. :)

Date: 2006-09-13 08:49 pm (UTC)so while he makes up his mind and/or frees up the time to deal w/ them & the filming process regarding them, at least she would have something to show for it if the financial assurity payment or whatever...

Date: 2006-09-13 05:30 am (UTC)Did you somehow manage to miss my gushing review posts about these books earlier this year? ;) (If you click on the link, you can see all three posts, with the spoilery bits behind lj-cut tags; this way you'll at least see my picoreviews.) Short form: the first one, His Majesty's Dragon, remains hands down the coolest thing I've read all year.
