annathepiper: (Good Book)

Made it over to Target with [livejournal.com profile] solarbird yesterday afternoon, as announced. We bought clothes. It was fun. :) We both got a bunch of socks and some pairs of pants, and I picked up a top that'll look good on me if I can lose another 15 pounds or so. It's a great green color and has some nice leafy embroidery work around the collar. We also stopped at Barnes and Noble, though--where I picked up The Cardinal Rule by Cate Dermody, [livejournal.com profile] mizkit's other writerly self.

Last night was sushi with Joi, and that too was very pleasant; the food and conversation were both quite enjoyable, and it was good to see Joi again.

Today is more low-key, with a bunch of paying of bills and balancing of checkbooks. But between last night and this morning I zipped through Kit's book. It amused me. This was the most non-romancy romance novel I'd ever read. There was plenty of chemistry between the heroine Alisha and two different men, but not a single sex scene or smooch. Plenty of things exploding, though, and Alisha pulling off Daring Feats of James-Bondian Spying. Have to admit--I liked it, and I'll be buying the next one in the storyline when it comes out. ;) In the meantime I need to keep moving through Mississippi Blues, which gets more surreal with every section of the book. And it's a slowish read, too. But I think I'll finish it off.

Tonight: pizza and a viewing of Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a good movie. There's only one part I turn my eyes away from in their big fight, but for the most part it's equal parts sexy, funny and awesome.

And hoo, do they both look amazing in this movie. You can practically see the sparks shooting between them the entire time they're on screen. They're both good enough actors that I could see it being faked, but I'm not at all surprised by how they ended up together offscreen.

And since I was always vaguely annoyed at Jennifer Aniston, I really don't mind it that much, either. I guess I should buy one of those 'Team Jolie' t-shirts they're selling online....

Anyway, sounds like a nice day! :) Enjoy the movie!

I usually shop for clothes at Target myself but this entry (http://mistressmatisse.blogspot.com/2005/12/today-not-only-is-there-new-column-and.html) in Mistress Matisse's blog has changed my mind. The relevant part is down towards the bottom of the entry.

I don't think that "feminist" is a label that could honestly be applied to me but the situation described there is beyond the pale.

there's a "lesser of two evils" thing going on with me in regards to Target. Because they are also getting slammed by a lot of radical right groups for their use of "Happy Holidays" decorations rather than "Merry Christmas"
*sigh* I usually ignore PC boycotts for this very reason. It makes it so difficult (especially for a po' person like me) to buy anything. How do you decide? Not to mention, how do you keep up with all of it?

Also, in terms of amount of money I'm willing to spend on clothes, there aren't too many other department stores in these parts that are in the same neck of the woods
I hear ya there. Plus, I'm short and fat (though I'm getting skinnier these past few months... w00t!) and finding clothes that fit both my funny shape and old skool taste is a real challenge.

I'm still waiting for the time machine so I can zap back to the Weimar era, where I belong.

Dang - guess I'd better get myself over to Target - that's *exactly* the kind of cut that I totally need. I can't handle the higher waists. I was thrilled when the 'new fad style' went low-waisted... but now the trend is swinging back toward higher waists. Why can't there just be pants for EVERYONE? ("All I want is pants - a decent pair of pants!" "Solomon Grundy want pants too!")

Ah. I always felt that the higher ones were cutting into my belly - I guess lower-slung ones might not hold it in all snugly, but they don't feel like they are cutting me in half either. It took a while but I figured out that the higher ones were actually interfering with my digestion somehow and causing heartburn - it would go away if/when I unbuttoned and unzipped the high jeans. I don't have an enormous belly or anything, it just gets really cranky about pants, I guess. ;)

I used to wear mine really tight when I was younger - but I don't wear 'em that way anymore! First of all, I've got a lot more to stuff into them than I had in high school, and it doesn't look nearly as good as it used to! ;) I'm usually happy if I can find ones that are not too tight, not too loose, and don't succomb to saggy-butt syndrome after a couple weeks.

Fred Meyer is comparable in some respects to Target, though I haven't bought many clothes at either place so I don't know if they'll have the same kind of options as Target. It's worth a look, though. There's a Fred Meyer just north of Bothell on 527 (at the next shopping center after Canyon Park), and there's another one on Lake City Way not far from 145th.

Fred Meyer was independent for a long time, a Portland institution, but now they're part of the Kroger empire (which also owns QFC, Ralph's, and Payless, among others). Kroger gives 88% (http://www.buyblue.org/node/1304/view/summary) of its political donations to Republicans, but the total pool of donations is only $17,000 and they aren't associated with discriminatory policies in their stores (that I know--none of their properties are in the top 50 pharmacies in the US, and so aren't evaluated at Planned Parenthood's scorecard (http://www.saveroe.com/fillmypillsnow/content.php?pid=302).) By comparison, Target gives 83% (http://www.buyblue.org/node/1963/view/summary) of its political donations to Republicans out of a total pool of over $200,000, and it's one of five companies highlighted by Planned Parenthood for refusing to give medicine to women.

Did you know that AMC is doing a mini marathon of Elvis movies. They're showing repeats of three of his movies; Girls! Girls! Girls! is on now, with Blue Hawaii and G.I. Blues waiting. I'm listening in because Aunt Eileen wanted me to record them on the DVR for when she gets back to KY (she's in MI helping Tanya now, babysitting).
