Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Sep. 16th, 2005 06:27 pmWound up leaving work early today; the cough and the headache I was getting from it, combined with general exhaustion, was turning my brain to sludge. Plus we had nothing to do anyway, since we'd never gotten any builds to test, and all I was doing was busywork. So I sent mail to
spazzkat to let him know I was bailing early, caught the bus, and headed to the U district.
I wanted the Montlake walk even though I was fried, hoping that some exercise would help kick my metabolism up. I also wanted to swing by the Barnes and Noble to pick up the Serenity novelization, since
seimaisin had posted about it, and I wanted hot cocoa and a toffee almond bar from Starbuck's. The book acquisition was successful. The cocoa and snack acquisition was not, as both of the Starbuck's in the U village had unacceptably long lines and I was not in a mood to wait. So I trudged on over to the bus stop to read more of Pattern Recognition, and wait for the bus...
...where, to our mutual pleasure and surprise, I bumped into
solarbird on her way home from MurkSouth. So we rode home together and got off at Lake Forest Park Town Centre, where I got that hot cocoa and snack from the Starbuck's there, and Dara got preserves at the Albertson's and a package mailed at the post office, and I popped into the Rite Aid to ask them for a recommendation for a good medicine to take to conquer this goddamned cough. (They told me either Robitussin DM or Delsym. I opted for Delsym. I am not sure that was a good choice yet, having now taken a dose of the stuff and finding myself still cough-y, but this may be my fault since I neglected to actually shake the stupid bottle as per the heavily emphasized instructions on the bottle. Bah.)
Once I got home I got on the treadmill to continue to try to poke at my metabolism and also because I really needed to hear some Great Big Sea, and that got me another mile on the exercise total.
Paul's cooking now, and I'm wiped, and I think I'm going to doze until food is ready.
Friday miles: 3.77 (walking + treadmill)
Miles out of Hobbiton: 333.17
Miles to Rivendell: 124.83

Date: 2005-09-17 01:34 am (UTC)They actually have free wireless at that QFC, and a nice-ish area to sit with your coffee and laptop and a big hi-def flatscreen tuned to the news.
My roommates and I used to hang out down there just after we moved and didn't have net or cable TV. :)
Hope you feel better soon! One remedy I've found that can really help loosen up a cough is keeping yourself hydrated, both by drinking a lot of water and using a humidifier to make the air less dry. Also, you can try boiling some water, dropping in a couple of coughdrops, and breathing in the steam -- I usually drape a towel over my head so the steam doesn't just drift away. It's not a long term solution, but it can bring some relief without adding to your chemical intake. :)

Date: 2005-09-17 02:03 am (UTC)Last couple of nights, I've actually been using Vicks Vaporub, which I think achieves much the same concept that you're suggesting here. It helps... some. But I think you're probably also right in that I need to drink a lot more water. The coughs are feeling dry and deep, so that suggests I'm not hydrated well enough. This would also connect in with the fact that Dara and I actually do run a dehumidifier in the bedroom overnight, traditionally to help Dara's allergy problems, but also because we're now both used to the noise. Maybe I better try turning that off tonight.

Date: 2005-09-17 02:44 am (UTC)E&G boost your immune system. I take it at the first little tickle in the back of my throat. Zycam helps relieve the symptoms of a cold/cough and speeds up the whole process. So you wind up being sick for a much shorter period of time.
Well, rest up and feel better! :)

Date: 2005-09-17 11:42 pm (UTC)However, the Delsym I bought yesterday seems to be doing pretty well easing my chest. It hasn't gotten rid of the cough entirely, but it's helped a lot. And it tastes better than Dayquil.
I'm familiar with E&G, but not Zycam.
And thanks, I'm doing my best to get some rest. :) Didn't sleep the night, but the bits when I slept were better than they've been for the last couple nights.
