Back at work again today, trying to regain some semblance of normalcy in my life, not to mention resumption of a steady paycheck until my contract runs out. But I feel all weak and wobbly and disconnected; part of this, as [livejournal.com profile] spazzkat observes to me, may be illness. But I'm also on Dayquil, and I'm coming off of a night on Nyquil--and an interrupted night at that. I woke up around 4:30 after having... well, I can't quite call it a nightmare, because it was not particularly traumatic or anything, but it was definitely an annoying bad dream.

I dreamed [livejournal.com profile] writersweekend was having a party in an enormous house, but I was exhausted and desperately in need of sleep. I remember having to retreat to an unfinished attic to sleep up there, only some workmen showed up to do remodeling, so I had to leave. I wound up in a spare bedroom with a couple of bunk beds, but visitors had already been given that room to sleep in, so I couldn't sleep there. Finally [livejournal.com profile] mamishka came to rescue me... only as we tried to go home, we wound up having to get her car out of an enormous parking garage full of people and deal with huge lines of cars. We wound up at a cafe to get me food, only then a friend of Mimi's showed up and started chattering socially at her, so I still couldn't get home and get to bed...

Meh.

I still haven't written a word since the flu hit, though yesterday I did at least finally regain enough braincells to peer at my timeline of events for Lament and try to figure out where in time I'm starting Kestar's next chapter. I'm not sure what words I'm going to use to start that chapter yet, but I did at least get a question answered about it.

And I started reading William Gibson's Pattern Recognition, since I was in the mood for something SF-noir-ish, thanks to Charlie Jade. Good read thus far, even though I'm not sure I care for Mr. Gibson's penchant for sentence fragments. Especially sentence fragments that start with verbs and which have no subjects. (She said, writing a sentence fragment.) It grated on me when I read The Shipping News, and it kind of grates with this book; I keep wanting to yell, "Where's the rest of this sentence?!" Now, okay, I get that this is a stylistic thing with Mr. Gibson, and with this book, unlike with The Shipping News, it actually kind of works for me in a way because it seems somehow more appropriate for the edgy SF feel of the work. Regardless, it's an interesting enough story that I'm enjoying the read.

Still working my way through the first season of Remington Steele, and [livejournal.com profile] solarbird reports that she's downloaded all of Charlie Jade now. We're also making a hard push to get through the rest of Lost in time for the season two opener; last night, we watched episode 18, "Numbers", which was fun. Hurley is one of the few members of this cast that I find genuinely likeable as a person.

However, I note with chagrin that I missed the premiere of Bones, the new thing that has David Boreanaz in it, which I kind of wanted to see because of, well, David Boreanaz. I see at least one person on my Friends list ([livejournal.com profile] alg) caught it and was less than impressed; any input from anyone else? Is it worth my time to track it down?

I regret deleting it so fast- I didn't think anyone would have wanted to watch it. :P

It's not bad, but not great. I will most likely continue to watch it because it really wasn't that bad. They do tip their hat to quick and say "oh, here is some NPC that gives information to the Audience to let you know more about the person" Too much say, not enough showing. Though if they temper this down they will have a pretty good show. Unless every plot is going to be exactly the same. hehe.

I would rate it a B+

Thanks. :)

btw: David is worth the watch.. though my more critical thoughts are:
1. David does play a serious person like he did before. There are simularities I find between the two characters- yet duh, they are the same person I suppose. He is soo neat to watch.

2. Ryan and I made the joke that this is X-files Part 2. IT has skully, mulder, and an eirily simular Mitch P. looking FBI boss.
They solve crime that deals with squimish things- there is a 'gross' factor for people who don't do well with bones. Hence the name. Interesting concepts, and a beutiful building of the lab where She does her work.
btw: I saw in the 'credits' that it is based off an actual person who is what the main actress does. She wrote a book and all. Thought that was sort of cool.

anyways. We should see if there is a rerun, I know most pilots get played fairly quickly afterwards. The WB is playing Supernatural 2 more times - we missed it because "Good Eats" had higher priority. oops. hehe. (We have tivo)

We recorded it, and I'll probably watch it tonight. It's based on Kathy Reichs, who has a bunch of novels out featuring a forensic anthropoligist, and I like her books.

For a series premier it wasn't bad. There are smart women all over the place in this thing and the female lead is very reminiscent of Jodie Foster (probably no accident there). It does feel like The X-Files: Part 2 only without the extraterrestrial bent, but that's not necessarily a bad. There was even a line between the two leads early in the episode as they agreed to work together on a case, "Spit on it [her hand and then shake, for context] and we're Scully and Mulder." So they're quite aware of the comparison. :) The lab was high-tech eye candy that I only hope they don't come to overuse. I can also see coming that the long-term dynamic of the show is going to revolve around growing unresolved sexual tension between the leads, but I suppose it matters most how that's executed. If they don't handle it cleverly, this will get boring fast. So we'll see. This first episode didn't suck though.

Bones was kind of interesting, not great but hopefully the kind of show that just takes a few episodes to really get going. I do have to agree with Gazer's assessment, though: the Boreanaz character is Angel with sunlight & no immortality. He was a military sniper, killed a crapload of people, and now his whole goal in life is to solve at least that many murders before he dies. Still trying to atone for his "evil" past.

Hee! The dream sounds like a very likely scenario if I were involved. Excited about Charlie and crossing my fingers that Bones shapes up nicely. :)
