Failure to suck

It seems I've accrued enough total hours with Volt that I am eligible for another week's worth of paid vacation. Which is extremely good, because that means I will be able to take most of my thyroid surgery recovery time as paid--and not have to worry about going an entire week without a paycheck. Yay!

The only downside of this is that since I have to take the whole week as a consecutive week rather than overlapping it across weekends, I can't go--say--Tuesday to Tuesday. And since Dr. Stickney does as I recall do her procedures on Tuesdays, I'll probably have to just take the Monday before the surgery and do the entire week. There will likely be a bit of recovery time overlap into the next week, which will make that week a short one, but at least I will be able to take most of the recovery time as paid vacation.

This is very heartening. Now, to just go and meet Dr. Stickey on Wednesday, and get everything arranged.

Yeah well, still not affording Worldcon regardless. And since Nasfic is going to be a working con, Dara and I will have to have some sort of other vacation later this year; don't know yet what kind!

Yeah. We decided weeks ago that we weren't making Worldcon this year. In fact, there's a non-zero chance that I will be having surgery during the actual timeframe of Worldcon anyway. It's early this year--August 4-8. And that's about when I expect Dr. Stickney to schedule my surgery if this goes the same way it did last year

Yeah, totally. Week's paid vacation reading a bunch of Harry Potter and other books won't suck.

Of course I'll be on Percocet at the time and my throat will have stitches in it, but hey!

If you haven't bought the books yet, may I suggest giving Harry Potter a skip and going for George RR Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" series?

I've already started that one--I have read book 1 and I have book 2 on my To Read shelves.

That said--I think reading those will require more brains out of me than I'm likely to have while I'm on painkillers! So Harry Potter will be rather more likely to be my speed. ;)

Howl's Moving Castle?

I am somewhat interested in reading Howl's Moving Castle, but as I am on a strict no-book-buying budget until September (when we get more rental income), I'll have to settle for reading whatever's in the house. Which means #1, what I have on my To Read shelves, #2, what other housemates have on their shelves (and spazzkat has all of the Harry Potters now), #3, whatever people might bring me, and #4, what I have brainpower to read. :)

I don't know if that'll be part of the official recovery program, but let's put it this way--if there's sorbet in the house, chances are high that I'll eat it. ;)

Yeah well--my contract expires in October. So by the time I'll be ready for another vacation, I'll be on my mandatory 100-day break from further Microsoft contracts anyway. Ah well!
