Working on a Sunday post
Mar. 20th, 2005 02:06 pmI'm at work today, making up for impending Not Being at Work on Friday, and it's actually kind of cool. The lab is practically deserted--though not entirely, since there are a couple of other lab folks here today doing Stuff. I had to call Security, though, to make sure that they knew my car was here--I hadn't yet bothered to register my car and get the obligatory "Yes, you're actually working at Microsoft" parking thingie to stick in the window, so I didn't want to take the chance of Security wandering by and going "HEY!"
So anyway, while I'm getting a few hundred tests running on a bunch of test servers, here now is an LJ update!
+0: So my St. Paddy's day wasn't terribly exciting, but I didn't really mind. In a small twist of irony given my insomnia problems lately, I actually overslept that morning--due to having stayed up late the night before, and being sleepier than usual by the time I went to bed. This seemed to make me forget to actually turn on the stupid alarm! I kicked it into 'display what the alarm setting is' mode instead, and so when
solarbird woke me up, we both thought it was 7am, which is when I usually get up. Only when I got outside and on the way down the hill to the bus stop did I realize I'd overslept by nearly forty-five minutes. DOH.
As a result I wound up staying later at work than usual, and taking some of the later busses. I decided to make that day's exercise, too, be walking instead of treadmill; I did the same thing I did the last time I wanted to walk out in the open air, i.e., taking the 545 to Montlake and walking down to pick up the 372 in front of the U Village shopping center. Then I caught the 372 and got off by Lake Forest Park Town Centre, which gave me another mile to walk to actually get home. It was a pretty hefty walk all told for an evening, but it got me about the same amount of effort as I'd have put out on the treadmill. So, yay!
+1: As appears to be becoming a weekend tradition,
spazzkat gave me a lift home from work on Friday afternoon. We stopped at his place to pick up the next episode of Lost, and then hung out at MurkNorth to watch it as well as this week's Battlestar Galactica. I am now behind on my BSG journal posts, and I have a lot to say about the recent episodes, so I'll be doing my best to get those things written down!
Only half a mile for Rivendell purposes on Friday, since Paul gave me a lift home, but .5 miles is better than none!
+2: Though my weekend was technically truncated, yesterday was pretty fun.
Dara and I played around with the music-sharing functionality of iTunes, and made it so that we could see each other's music libraries from our computers. Dara's immediate reaction to seeing mine: "Man, you have a lot of crap, doncha?" (Of course, she then cheerfully acknowledged that SHE has NIGHT RANGER on her machine, so she isn't exactly in a position to talk. ;) ) She was also amused to see that Great Big Sea dominates the "Top 25 Most Played" playlist I had set up--and though I then changed it to be a "Top 40 Most Played" playlist, GBS still reigned supreme, with only one ditty by Heather Alexander challenging their monopoly! But hey, I really dig "The Witch of the Westmereland". :D
It was pretty cool to hear her playing stuff off my computer via hers, especially since she has way better speakers on her machine than I do on mine. Mostly, though, this discovery is probably going to prove useful for sharing out both of our libraries to be accessible via our server kimo, which we have in our office, and where we can play music on Real speakers.
Bill-paying occurred, and so did editing of Chapter 12, and so did the watching of "Return to Tomorrow", the 'Sargon Take Me Away!' episode of Old Trek, to which I am partial. There are prime Shatner moments in that ep--especially when Kirk starts waxing eloquent about exactly why he wants to go through with trading minds with Sargon for a while. Hee hee hee.
flit arrived from California, so's to spend a few days hanging out with
risu. Pleasant conversation was had by all.
And then Dara and I went out in the evening, to visit
writersweekend and congratulate her on her new house. We didn't stay terribly long, but we did say hi to folks who were there, and had some pleasant conservation there as well.
Karen's new place is in Bellevue, not too terribly far from 520, and not too far away from downtown Bellevue either. As we were coming out of her place, we heard a couple of HUGE bangs off in the distance, and Dara spotted a couple of flashes of light. We don't know what it was, yet, but the bangs were pretty impressive.
Over then to a birthday party being held by our former housemate Ian. It was supposed to be a joint birthday party, but the other two guests of honor were not yet present when we showed up. So mostly we hung around a bit, chatted with Ian, and chatted with a few other of his guests; Dara shared all her blackmail fodder about Ian, to the amusement of others. And Ian made me a drink he called a "Greyhound", which had grapefruit juice in it. And homemade moonshine. It was STRONG, and I could not put more than a scant dent in it. This is what I get for being a very cheap drunk. ;)
We wound up not staying there too terribly long either, though Dara teased me about dragging her off early. But I wanted to get home and keep editing while I still had a brain, and I wound up getting two of the 2 1/3 pages I edited yesterday done after we got home. So that was all good!
Miles on Thursday: 2.75
Miles on Friday: 0.5
Miles out of Hobbiton: 47.55
Miles to Rivendell: 410.45
