+0: Every time I launch the Task Manager on one of my servers here at work, I see alg.exe in the list of running processes. I have no idea what this is, but it makes me giggle every time I see it, because it reminds me of alg. Maybe I should send it a manuscript. ;)

+1: It looks like at least two folks on my Friends list--aside from the usual suspects connected to the Murkworks, that is--are going to be at Norwescon! Anybody besides howlinhobbit and elfmaid planning to be there? If so, sing out. We should meet!

+2: No treadmill last night, but I didn't have any cake either, so that's all good. And I groove on getting in a mile a day with the bus stop walks, too.

I call it algore.exe. It has something to do with ICS and the firewall, but I can't figure out why it runs on MY machine when I have both items turned off. feh

Did you turn off the firewall from the control panel settings, or kill the actual service in your services manager? Maybe it's connected with the latter. Dunno.

I see I've got it running on my system as well. Sounds like as long as it's doing what it's designed for it's harmless. I think some people on that site I linked to are trying to spread a little anti-Microborg fear.

Well, it's not implausible that certain virii/trojans/worms out there might in fact replace alg.exe with their own version--in which case, if someone is only familiar with that that virus/trojan/worm does and is NOT familiar with the Windows executable, they'd be right to be nervous about it.

There's at least one other similar situation I know about, where people think that another executable in Windows is a virus when it fact it's not. It's less about being anti-Microsoft and more about people being so twitchy about virii and such that if one person gets a mistaken idea, it can spread like wildfire across the Internet. Very few people actually think to go check virus information sites for real data.
