Word in from my sister-in-law this evening says that my grandmother is doing pretty well and will be released from the hospital on Sunday. She would have been released earlier, except that she had an allergic reaction to the dye that they were using (presumably to track their way through her system, or something; Didi didn't mention) on her. I'm also informed that my aunt Kim, one of Grandma's surviving children, has come in to spend time with her. Kim was coming anyway as Grandma has a birthday this week, but her being in the hospital made it more important.

So, that's a relief! Yay, grandmother being out of the hospital soon!

I'm glad to hear she's doing well. :) {{{{{{{{Hugs}}}}}}}} My mom just went in for knee replacement sugery today, and my bro, [livejournal.com profile] nyipe04, said she's doing well, and should be home by Sunday... Bad knees seem to be something that runs on my mom's side of the family, and since my knees give me more trouble than they should, I'll be gettingthe same surgery down the road... ::sigh::

My sister and mother have both required surgeries on their knees, due to problems arising, ultimately, from weakness. My mom shattered her kneecap, and my sister tore some ligaments or something. And my father twisted his so badly he tore a bunch of stuff, too, come to think of it. All the right knee. My right knee, lately, has begun dislocated at the slightest provocation, and when I was a kid, I could pop it in and out on demand.

Hmmm...

I wonder if she has the same incredibly rare allergy to IV contrast dye that I have: Gadallinium (sp?). It's rare enough that the doctor did a double-take and insisted on checking my records when I told him about my reaction.

pardon me butting my nose in here, but that's the kind of info that ought to be on a medic-alert bracelet in case you're not conscious enough (ie after a car accident) to tell them yourself.

I*think* the "dye" is a radioactive isotope with a very short half-life..say, a few hours. I used to work in a hospital, and have seen the tracing process in action,as well as the "dye" being delivere from the place that created the isotope. I've forgotten which element was used as a tracer.I used to get the radiology department to save the lead containers the stuff came in. Little lead cylinders about the size of a film can, with a radiation symbol on the side...cool looking. Scott
