Grrr. Here's another anti-GBLT bill the Virginia legislature has coughed up. I've already heard of at least one queer friend who will be fleeing the state with his partner; this saddens me deeply. :(

Another anti-LGBT bill was also introduced this week in Virginia. Here's the link to the bill itself:

Interestingly, that part of the Virginia Code already was amended to prohibit local schools boards from denying access to their facilities specifically from the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts.

"HB 2868 -- Schools Bill -- Del.Glenn M. Weatherholtz"

"Policies regarding certain activities in public schools. Prohibits local school boards that provide equal access and fair opportunity to use school facilities or to distribute literature from allowing such access or opportunity to use such school facilities or to distribute literature to any club or other group that is focused on supporting, assisting, or justifying any lifestyle involving sexual behavior."

Says Equality Virginia: This measure is an extreme attempt to prohibit "Gay Straight Alliances" from existing in Virginia schools by making the untrue assumption that the purpose of these groups is to promote sexual behavior.

That's a very cleverly worded and constructed bill. I have to give the conservative right their props for creating a document that would seem harmless enough on the outside; by not promoting any lifestyle involving sexual behavior (what are we f-ing automotons now?); and worded loosely enough to allow to ban Gay/Straight Alliances. I guess they'll have to start GBSE (Gay/Bi Straight Edge) Chapters which promote abstinence. Who are these people!?

I bet they would claim that abstinence was a sexual behavior.

I lay you ten to one against them forbidding any abstinence-supporting clubs in Virginia schools, though. But it'd be real interesting to see somebody challenge an abstinence group on the grounds of this bill, if it passes.

Only problem with them organizing a queer-friendly abstinence-supporting club, unfortunately, is that in their minds abstinence applies to them only until after they're married, whereas with queers, they don't want us having any sex at all.
