Wanna hear and see Great Big Sea perform? Wanna see these Newfoundlanders that make Anna swoon? Go look here! That webcast I mentioned is apparently available to everybody right now after all, for the time being. :D You will need a high-speed connection to view it; it's a streaming broadcast.

HURRAY! Tides me over till they go on tour again!

And now, some high points of what's in the show. If you don't have the bandwidth to play the whole thing at once, hit these songs first!

In the intro: "We come from a culture where music and musicians are leaders." SING IT, Brother Alan! I want to live in a culture like that.

In "Lukey": Mmmm, that nice little layer-y bit in the bridge, and the final closing chord; beautiful! I still miss the hell out of Darrell Power, but Murray Foster has one gorgeous bass bottom note when those boys make with the harmony.

Really nice rendition of "When I'm Up" on the part of The Doyle.

Intro to "The Night Pat Murphy Died":

Séan: "This is a song I sing every night with this band. Every night, because of this song, someone has to die. Shall we kill him? Shall we kill him, people? SHALL WE KILL PADDY MURPHY AGAIN?" (Crowd roars.) "You're a bloodthirsty crowd, but I'll oblige you. Ohhhhhhh the night that Paddy Murphy died..."

Intro to "When I'm King":

Alan: "And now, brothers and sisters, a song about what might happen should... by some strange twist of fate... should I become King!" (Crowd roars.) "I agree that it's most unlikely that that will happen!"
Séan: "It could happen!"
Alan: "It could happen!"
Séan: "It could happen! Stranger things have recently happened."
Alan: "George Bush became President, so I figure I could become King!"

"Scolding Wife":

I love this song with all my heart and have ever since it came out on Sea of No Cares. However, this is another point where I miss the hell out of Darrell, because Murray, who now sings Darrell's verse, is so obviously NOT from Newfoundland every time he takes over singing. ;) He's got a great voice, but the accent switch still tilts my brain every time I hear it!

"Clearest Indication":

BEAUTIFUL vocals from both Alan and Séan. This is one of my favorite GBS ballads; I love playing this one on the guitar, though I haven't managed to figure out how to play it and sing it at the same time by myself.

"Excursion Around the Bay":

This STILL sounds wrong sung by Alan on the lead instead of Darrell, but this is what I get for being a veteran GBS fan used to that being the only song Darrell sang in the later shows when he was still in the band. ;) If you listen to GBS's live album Road Rage, or if you buy the recently released Great Big CD & DVD, Darrell sings lead on this ditty there.

This is not to say, however, that the B'ys do not hit their usual glorious harmony here. Yum!

"Rant and Roar":

Speaking of glorious harmony! Mmmmmmmm!

Now if I can figure out how to actually save this thing on my hard drive, I'll be set. ;)
