Jan. 13th, 2005 10:31 am+0: The more I watch Firefly, the more I groove on it. Stupid Fox network, cancelling a most excellent show.
Rebecca informed us that she had heard tell of a convention at which Nathan Fillion had been in attendance. Apparently the gamers at this con were running a Firefly scenario, and he just showed up. They let him play Captain Mal. I cannot verify the truth of this little story, but it amuses the hell out of me, just because I giggle at the thought of the looks on the gamers' faces when Mr. Fillion wandered in. Hee. Hell, I'd let him play Mal too. ;)
(Did I mention Captain Tightpants is exactly my kind of swoonable hero? Lean, rugged, independent, not exactly well-spoken, but absolutely principled. Also, he looks VERY good in his pants. ;) )
Also, I got Kaylee on the "What Firefly character are you?" quiz. Meems agrees with me that of all the characters in the cast, she's definitely the best match to me. I figure it's because she's geeky in her own way, small, cute, and invariably sunny. And yet, capable of standing up for herself when she needs to!
However, I have yet to make sweet love next to a large humming engine.
+1: Assuming nothing interesting shows up in today's mail, today is the three-month mark since I got the acknowledgement back from Tor. I need to go back and dig into my 1987 diary and see if I can nail down when I originally sent off my very first attempt at a story to Del Rey--just because I'm not certain if I've passed the turnaround time I had on that. If I can pass that turnaround time with no rejection letter, this will sit very well with me.
-2: Didn't bug something fast enough at work and our lead got stern mail about it. Oops. Fortunately this doesn't seem to be entirely my problem as this thing only came to my attention this week; the last time we ran the test cases we had other things going on at the same time, and the guy I'm working with was working on those cases, not me. So I only have to be 'providing information' girl. Sucky pay or not, there are advantages to being a contractor.
+2a: I was informed in yesterday's status meeting that once the thing I'm currently working on ships, I will be "repurposed". (Don't you just love corporate-speak?) This would seem to suggest that my contract will get extended in April. I'll have to get that verified when the time comes.
+/-2b: We're getting a new lead. I'm a little disappointed about this just because I really like my current lead; he's on top of things, he's sociable, he shares some interests in common with me, and he's really great at asking you for immediate statuses but also standing back and letting you do your work. On the other hand, the new guy seems pretty nifty; he has a streak of purple in his hair, and he's apparently a musician! So that'll be good too.

Date: 2005-01-13 07:21 pm (UTC)I got the DVD set for Christmas, and watched the entire thing with my Dad, two episodes a day. It is perhaps a sign of the odd sense of humour we share that, though we had seen it before, we both laughed for twenty minutes (in that roaring, then giggling, then looking at each other and roaring again as one of us makes the appropriate 'thwiiiip!' noise sort of way) at the end of "The Train Job", in which Niska's henchthug has the unfortunate encounter with the engine.
I get Wash on the quizzes, every time.

Date: 2005-01-13 07:28 pm (UTC)If you like Joss Whedon's work you'll probably dig Firefly a lot. It's got the same nifty ensemble-cast chemistry and snappy dialogue. However, I give it higher marks than either Buffy or Angel--just because by and large every single episode comes across to me as very solid. This may be because there are only a limited set to choose from and we didn't have time to get any crappy ones, but. :)
Also, it does do the odd thing of combining a futuristic setting with a flavor of the Old West, which I am given to understand puts some people off. Me, I really like it.

Date: 2005-01-14 02:54 am (UTC)I think it'd be an interesting question, though, as to whether Joss Whedon would want to resume doing Firefly as a TV show. It'd be kind of weird to go TV show-->movie-->back to TV show. The X-Files did it, but then again, after the X-Files movie, the show started to suck. ;)
