+0: And a welcome goes out to alg, the latest person to be looking on my journal. Hiya!

+/-1: Rumors are starting to fly fast and furious about Six Apart buying Livejournal. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with Six Apart, they're the folks that do Movable Type, the blogging system several folks of my acquaintance use. I'm seeing some worry about this on my Friends list, primarily in the realm of 'will this make LJ prices go up?' and 'what will this do to the greater LJ community?' I'm not sure what I think about this yet. But I'm hoping it won't impact LJ in a negative way. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

+2: I sent an email last night to the greatbigsea.com site admin, just to give her (and through her, the band) some words of support for what must have been a very difficult decision about shutting down the OKP. It's a sad thing for those of us who have made some great friendships via that board, and I just wanted to let them know that having had it does mean something to GBS fandom. I got a nice reply back from her telling me thank you for the letter, and that she was going to forward it on to the band. *^_^* Those of you who are OKPers on my Friends list, I encourage you all to consider sending Joanne (and the band) appreciation notes for letting us fans have the OKP for so long and to please continue to keep in touch with GBS fandom via the web page (e.g., Alan's From the Road journal and the band newsletters). Without the OKP as an easy way to monitor fan feedback, positive emails to remind the B'ys that the vast majority of their fandom are not idiots will be a Very Good Thing.

-3: Stupid weather.com and its rapidly changing forecasts for the Seattle area. Yesterday, signs of snow all over the place for the next week or so. Today, barely a peep. Which just goes to show you that you can't predict the weather around here till you actually look out the window.

+4: Back at work again this week, and it's pretty much the same routine. We have some new people on our team, though I have yet to really talk to any of them as they sit clear down on the other end of the lab. But I'm sure I'll see more of them in the next team meeting.

+5: This weekend is the anniversary of Elvis' birthday and there is a big ol' Elvis movie marathon scheduled on AMC. :D darthhellokitty, I'm looking in your direction, since you were making amused commentary at me before about Elvis movies. ;) Of course, I OWN most of the movies that AMC is going to show, but hey!

+6: I definitely need me some more albums by Altan. Just to prove that I do occasionally listen to bands besides Great Big Sea, I went through my entire Altan playlist yesterday and found myself grooving more than once on several of their instrumentals; plus, when the whole lot of them kick into harmony on the vocals, they make a very nice, full sound. Thanks to starfallz for originally recommending them to me!

+7: I really, really like today's Get Fuzzy. "I am a walking weasel-beating unit... a living ferret nightmare." HEE. Funny, though, how Bucky's lines in this strip sound almost Tickian. ;)

I am not familiar with this particular group, but Celtic/Irish folk is definitely my cup of tea. I tend to prefer groups with a livelier beat--GBS being a fine upstanding example. La Bottine Souriante is another, with their nifty "wall of sound" brass they have going on. If it's a more mellow group, such as Solas or Altan, I look for large numbers of singers in a group for multi-layered harmony goodness (again, GBS being a fine example), or else one or two very distinctive singers (La Bottine Souriante has a fine, FINE lead vocalist and so does Solas). Also, blazing fiddle goodness is a plus. ^_^

I'll check these folks out!

I haven't avidly paid attention to the weather for years. My habit has been to look out the window, possibly with the window open to see what the weather is like. I may eventually get to the point of having an ear open to what the forecasters say, but until then, I'll keep to my own system.

*snicker* I'm here to tell you though--Kentucky has nothing on the randomness of Seattle weather. At least in Kentucky, a day or two in advance the forecast is usually pretty reliable. All that flat in Kentucky gives meteorologists space to see the weather coming, maybe. ;)

Up here, though, with dozens of tiny little microclimates all over the area, you might as well be throwing darts at a board.

Hahaha... sounds about like Erie... about the only thing you can be certain of is that on any given day there are bound to be clouds somewhere... not one of the TV stations gives the same report as another, and weather.com, AOL, or Weatherbug can't seem to agree either...

Your proximity to a large body of water may well be playing the same havoc with your local weather systems that Lakes Washington and Union and Puget Sound play with here. What's the terrain like there? Flat? Or do you have any hills at all?

hrmm... well, it's a slight uphill climb til you hit I-90, and then you hit the hills... I'm only 8 blocks from the bay, and I'm already uphill a bit (prob from the erosion, etc over the eons) there's a nice little rise or whatever you want to call it on the south-side of the bayfront...

So in other words, you may well have a similar sort of "pockets of microclimates" situation going on. Okay.

Yup... you could say that... apparently the colder air just blows over the relatively flatter land between the lake and I-90, and that little rise just gives it enough of a boost that's favorable for condensation and creating lots of snowfall... Erie can have very little or no snow at all (0-4") while points in the snow belt get 8-12" or more...

The NOAA (http://www.crh.noaa.gov/forecasts/WAZ004.php?warncounty=WAC033&city=Mercer+Island) seems to think it's going to snow. I prefer both noaa.gov and wunderground.com to weather.com

Oh, I approve of that forecast. That's way cooler than weather.com's.

(Of course, I'll believe we'll get flake one when I actually see it falling from the sky. But!)

Also, in a similar vein, it is Very Cold in my house right now. Brrrr.

My mom (in Bellevue near eastgate) has frost all over her house and yard that's been there for 2 days straight. Brrrr.

I hope it snows, but not enough to close school.

So do we! Have frost that's been hanging around for the last few days, that is. This is us learning that Kenmore is in fact generally a few degrees colder than Seattle.

It would be fabulous if we had weekend snow. Or maybe snow fortuitously timed on Friday such that I could still come in and get a majority of the day's work done and then get to go home early but not have to take three hours to get home because of snow, like I did round about this time last year. :)
