Uh-oh. The first season of MacGyver is coming out on DVD on January 25, 2005. :D I can hear solarbird groaning now, but I WILL be buying this. I mean, hey, Richard Dean Anderson and I have the same damn birthday and the 25th of January is just two scant days after the day in question, so how can I pass this up? :D

Also, I hear rumors that both Remington Steele and Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman will be hitting DVD next year as well. I must, must, MUST have the first season of both of these shows, and probably ALL of Steele!

Hee hee! I actually have the first season of Stargate on tape but never got around to watching it. A friend in Kentucky gave me the tapes when she learned I was a big MacGyver fan.

The first couple seasons of MacGyver were the best-they had the guy who did "Mr. Wizard" as a science advisor,and the stuff MacGyver did could've worked, though not as reliably as it did on the show...the later seasons got kind of goofy at times-you could tell when they stopped having a science advisor.
The name "macgyver" is part of American slang now, meaning to kludge something together on the fly. At my last job,it was often asked "Are we going to fix this, or have to MacGyver it?"..Scott

For me, the first three or four seasons were the best not just because of the better MacGyverisms (yes, they do actually have their own slang term), but because of the better plots.

I liked the vaguely-secret-agent-y flavor of the first few seasons, and then there was the environmental-y flavor of many of the middle episodes, which was also cool. But once the show kicked over into "social issue of the week" mode, BOR-ING. And the last season, when they filmed in L.A. rather than in Canada, was especially lame that way. You could kind of gauge the lameness of the season by the length of MacGyver's mullet. ;)

I figure I'll probably buy maybe the first four seasons. I was taping them off the TV Land channel, but it'll be nice to have them on DVD instead, to take up less space on the shelves!

Dead on-when it got preachy,it got lame.There's enough Disease/Social Problem/Disater Of The Week stuff on..
Years ago, when the show was new, a friend of mine was a big MacGyver fan,and I got him the identical knife and watch MacGyver used. Models changed over the years, but at that time, he used the Tinker knife,and the Timex military version(made one year-1982..radioactive dial! How Non-PC..) Scott

Hee hee! I wasn't quite young enough to play being MacGyver when the show had its run--I was already a teenager when it started coming out, so my interest in MacGyver was much more of the 'schoolgirl with a crush' variety. ;) (Hey, handsome, rugged, and smart! My kind of hero, both then AND now.)

But I would TOTALLY have played MacGyver if I'd been six or seven years younger.

I've already started buying Buffy; I've got the first season. Haven't really had the opportunity to pick up the rest yet.

I tried to watch a rerun of MacGyver on cable a few months ago...Just couldn't do it. The mullet was awful! :) And I do love RDA.

Ah, Remington Steele. I grew up watching Remington Steele. I wanted to BE Remington Steele. haha!!

It was so much better than Moonlighting too. (Which seemed to be more popular I think.)

I could care less about MacGyver or the other thing though.

Remington Steele was, indeed, loads better than Moonlighting. :) I saw occasional episodes of the latter, but Bruce Willis didn't have a thing on Pierce Brosnan--and story-wise, from what I saw, Steele was consistently better regardless. Better mysteries, better writing, much better chemistry between the principals.

Yep, definitely looking forward to that Season One DVD set. :D
