A few small things
Dec. 15th, 2004 09:27 am+0: A big HIYA! to
+1: I am trying an experiment: drinking more water throughout the day and allowing myself only one can of soda at work and one when I get home. So far this has had the interesting effects of my being startlingly awake in the morning, sleeping a little better, and not feeling like quite so much of a spazz. I have also lost half a pound, but I'm not yet convinced that that isn't just incidental fluctuation. We'll have to see if I can keep it up, though.
-2: I just finished up reading Murder is a Girl's Best Friend, the second Paige Turner mystery by Amanda Matetsky. I thought the first one was cute, being set in the fifties and all, but I'm less enthused with the second. Too little of the relationship she'd established between her heroine and said heroine's love interest in the second book--he was pretty much reduced to token appearances to show up and smooch Paige every so often, and had pretty much no participation in the plot. And a lot of Paige's behavior towards Dan struck me as relying too much upon stereotypical "girly" behavior from that era: her boy 'forbids' her to do something, so she goes behind his back and does it anyway, and doesn't have the guts to tell him to his face that she needs to do this thing and just ask him for his help. She gets a phone call from the villain who gives her the silent treatment on the phone, and then when Dan is the next person to call, she naturally thinks he's the villain and snaps at him. Which makes him snap at her. But does she explain what was going on? No. She claims she's having "female trouble". The character is described in blurbs on the book as a "force of nature"; in the first book, I kind of bought that, as she was bubbly and irrepressible. In the second book, though, she mostly came across to me as a ditz.
Oh well, on to trying to finish off The Three Musketeers!
+3: Turns out I've accrued enough hours with Volt this year that I'm entitled to a week's worth of paid vacation. YAY! So I won't actually have to have most of my time off this December as unpaid leave, which absolutely Fails to Suck. The only glitch was that I have to take the paid leave all in one week--so I have asked to have the 30th and the 31st of December as well as the 21st through the 29th, which was my original plan. Because it would still kind of suck to have 40 hours of paid vacation and not be able to spend it all!
Also, having two extra days to decompress after coming back from Kentucky will probably be a good idea anyway.
Less caffeine..
