Not exactly restful...
Dec. 12th, 2004 10:34 pmAfter the week I'd had, a peaceful weekend was really rather what I wanted. That was not, however, what I got. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing--just that I don't have much reserve built back up to slog through this next week. Here, however, is the weekend in review.
writersweekend had a party at her place, to which she kindly invited me. I showed up with
solarbird, a bit afraid that I wouldn't know what to say anybody--but thankfully found a couple of very nice folks with whom I had a most pleasant time discussing Laurell K. Hamilton's books, J.D. Robb's books, our own books in progress, and the joys of Great Big Sea. :D (Ah, the pleasure of having my Sea of No Cares shirt actually recognized by total strangers!) Happily, Dara also hit it off with Karen in the realm of housegeeking, and we were both impressed by the size of Karen's household pets. The big gray cat was about the size I envision for some of my very favorite book cats--Mister in Jim Butcher's novels, as well as a plethora of the big buff cats all over the Amelia Peabodies. If he had been orange and long-haired, he'd have been perfect for the part of Fortissimo in my own little book.
Also, English mastiffs are very, very large. We got a look at the doggie when Dara happened to peek behind a door and discover that it led down to the basement--which alerted the dog, who came up the stairs and made plaintive "please let me come out and play" noises. Karen advised us that he needed to stay down there, on the grounds that he had a tail that would actually bruise people with the force of its wag. Given the size of that dog, I believe it.
It was also a surprise and a pleasure to see that Karen had acquired a copy of Scream Queens of the Dead Sea, which she told me she highly enjoyed.
All in all, not a half-bad evening. I normally feel very awkward at parties, especially parties full of pretty much total strangers, but once I got past the initial 'eep' it was nice indeed.
Thanks again, Karen, for having us over!
+1: In honor of
spazzkat's forthcoming birthday, he arranged for a small number of us to go bowling at Leilani Lanes in Greenwood--in what is fast becoming a yearly tradition. (
sarekofvulcan, I know I said I'd let you know next time we did bowling so we could bring you in on it--Paul arranged this one, not me, but when I arrange some bowling, be assured you'll hear about it. :) )
kathrynt and
llachglin, who had watched Star Trek II for the first time with Paul the night before, showed up with a birthday cake that read "KHAAAAAAAAAN!"--which was quite well received by all. Also in attendance: myself and
solarbird,
mamishka,
darthhellokitty and
kingchiron, and
jessicac.
Erik, Doug, Dara, and Paul were definitely the best bowlers amongst us. I could probably get a better hang at it if I did it more than once a year--I always have a bit of ramp-up time while bowling before I remember how to make the ball roll straight. We did in fact discuss the possibility of bowling more often, possibly expanding our bowling efforts to take in Kenmore Lanes. We'll have to see what happens in that regard.
Far and away, though, the high point of the event was Kathryn scampering over to a bunch of guys a few lanes down who were having a bachelor party, and getting them to come over and sing "Happy Birthday" for Paul. That was GREAT. They had come to our attention by making a rule amongst themselves that if any of them got a ball into the gutters on their lanes, they'd have to go find a stranger and ask for change. So Jessica and Layna and Kathryn countered by making a rule that if they wanted change, they'd have to sing a song. Hee. Anyway, the guys were great sports and didn't sound bad at all when they sang for Paul. They even got in a little harmony on the end.
Later that evening, Paul came over to hang out with Dara and me and watch Doctor Who. We did not include pizza as is our usual Saturday evening custom, since we'd had lots of nummy food at the bowling alley as it was. But it was a nice quiet evening, anyway.
+/-2: Today, I went to the mall. Part of this quest was to spend the gift card I'd gotten when I bought my new coat a few weeks ago, since today was the last day I could spend it. That netted me four pairs of socks that came to about three bucks and change, total, which was pretty cool. I also wound up buying a pair of headphones to replace the small set I'd been using with the iPod and a new watch battery while I was still at the mall. The latter was just a buck-and-a-half watch battery, but damned if I could find anywhere in the mall that would actually PUT THE THING IN MY WATCH for me. One watch shop claimed they'd not be able to do it until the next day. Another little booth with watch bands and batteries refused to install any batteries but their own.
So I had to hold out a bit, till after I'd gone to Silver Platters and picked up a couple of gifty thingies there for persons who shall remain nameless, till I got back closer to home and stopped at Lake Forest Park Town Centre. There I got a jeweler store to put the battery in for me for another four bucks, and while I was waiting for them to do that I scored my own copy of Scream Queens of the Dead Sea. (You reading this,
elbom? This means your book is in fact on shelves in Lake Forest Park, Washington. ;) Third Place Books had three copies!)
And I got grocery-type things, and a randomly grabbed suspense paperback just for the sake of something fluffy to read, and then I headed home again.
Quiet afternoon and evening for the most part, involving editing attempts while Dara and I watched Ghostbusters, and reminded ourselves that we still need to get a copy of Groundhog Day.

Groundhog day is a great movie... have it on VHS, but would love to get it on DVD... just got Spiderman 2 and Harry Potter 3 this past week, and will probably end up waiting until after the holidays to get ROTK... after losing 3 days of work to turned ankle and stomach bug last week, this next paycheck is going to be rather small...

Date: 2004-12-14 12:09 am (UTC)Talked to him about it after he first moved in... didn't do any good... Landlady doesn't give a damn... she still hasn't done anything to fix the roof that's been leaking down the back corner of the house... all she cares about is the money...
as for ROTK... YEA!!! wanted to get the mega boxed set, but that's looking to be well over $70

Date: 2004-12-13 05:21 pm (UTC)I've got a pocketknife, as well as a set of tiny screwdrivers, but no specific tools for taking watches apart. And I have to do this so seldom that I'd just as soon pay somebody four bucks to do it for me. :)
