ahh... but they could fish for a compliment, or something could be "fishy." just trying to be helpful... but it IS your story ;)

Fishing for compliments would be totally inappropriate for the scene in question, and, while there is plenty fishy going on in the heroine's immediate life as of that point (and in fact the entire point of Chapter 9 is for her to get major clue-age about the fishiness), 'fishy' is not really a word she'd use. ;) And the story is in first person and from her point of view, so!
