And just for the sake of acknowledging that other things are in fact going on in my life...

+0: Somebody else has Friended me! Hi there [livejournal.com profile] morgie; I have the suspicion I should know you, as your ID looks familiar, but I'm not placing you right now. Sing out and identify yourself?

+1: I am not normally one prone to retail therapy, but I went out on a shopping quest today and acquired some items which I have been needing for a while: a new coat, a new pair of shoes, and a new bag. So off to Northgate Mall I went.

As a side tangent, I will note that the mall was jam-packed with people when I walked in, all lined up to get autographs from the cast of some show or other on UPN. I'm not exactly sure what show it was, except that I think it had "Veronica" in the title. That's about all I made out when I walked past the area where all the autographs were happening. Not a UPN watcher and haven't been since Buffy went off the air and [livejournal.com profile] solarbird and I stopped watching Enterprise on a regular basis, so this was mostly only interesting to me just for seeing what all the hullabaloo was about. The real purpose of the mall mission was, after all, the buying of STUFF.

First up: new bag. The goal here was to get something that would let me still carry stuff I consider absolutely vital to my daily existence while also making me carry less. Ever since breaking my arm, as I have been periodically prone to bitch about over the last many months, I have found myself with sporadic back pains if I'm on my feet for extended periods of time--especially if carrying stuff. So I thought I would punt the yellow backpack I've been carrying as well as the green fannypack, and try to carry just one bag on a daily basis. My bag of choice turns out to be made by the same people who made the backpack--Kipling. They make these brightly colorful bags of all sorts of styles, and luggage as well, with little monkeys dangling off of 'em. I (heart) the monkeys, so I have a new small red Kipling bag, too little to be a backpack, but looking a lot more like a backpack than a purse.

Next up: shoes. As I have lamented in a recent post, my shoes have been prone to getting my socks wet in recent days as I walk down the hill towards the bus stop in the mornings. This is not acceptable. So, having realized that the soles of my shoes were starting to come apart, I decided new ones were in order. I wasn't exactly sure where I wanted to get said shoes, not being terribly familiar with what I can find in malls these days, but a systematic ramble around Northgate brought me to a store called The Walking Company. Popped in there. Found some nice suede-type walking/light hiking shoes, and after trying them on, deemed them Nifty and purchased a pair. Being heavily prone to earth tones and greens, I was very tempted by a pair in that sort of color scheme, but finally decided instead on one with tan suede and bright yellow and black trim instead, just in my ongoing effort to wear more colorful things. The young sales dude also convinced me to buy a bottle of waterproofing goop for said shoes, and since this went well with my whole Keeping My Socks From Getting Wet On Rainy Days theme of shoes purchase, he didn't have to convince me very hard.

Last but not least, my major mission of the afternoon: a new coat. The jacket I have typically been wearing for the last five years is starting to look pretty old and shabby. It also doesn't really quite fit me properly through the shoulders anymore--probably as a result of my working with weights, even if I haven't done that in a while. So a new coat was in order, and as with the shoes, so with the coat--I wasn't particularly clued about where I wanted to get said coat. My walk around the mall was mostly fruitless; I didn't want to try the Bon or Nordy's just on the grounds of being seized by a Stranger in a Strange Land feeling every time I set foot in those places. I also said 'nah' to J.C. Penney's, and was on my way out of the mall with the intention of heading over to Target when I went past Eddie Bauer.

And my brain went, "Hey, they do nice outdoorsy stuff. Maybe they have coats."

Went in. Was greeted by a perky salesperson who asked me what I was after, and when I explained I wanted a short, sporty jacket, not really a 'rain jacket' kind of thing, she pointed me at some nice down jackets. Wound up buying a black one of those, as black is one of my colors, and was quite satisfied. The lady who rang me up was new to the job and kept apologizing for her unfamiliarity with what buttons to push on her register, but I assured her it was okay--and grinned and thought "Okay fine" as she chirped that if I got my purchase over a given amount I would be able to get a $25 holiday card to spend later. So I humored her, and got a pair of stripey socks. And a card. Which I will probably later spend on more stripey socks. Because what the heck else am I going to buy at Eddie Bauer for only $25?

All in all a successful retail mission.

+2: I am informed by [livejournal.com profile] jesshartley that she has indeed met up with [livejournal.com profile] mamishka and [livejournal.com profile] jessicac at Orycon. This pleases me, as it means I have arranged for three cool people I know who did not know one another previously to become acquainted. Yay!

+3: Nothin' says "OH GOODY" like finding a partial recording of the MST'ing of Manos: The Hands of Fate on an unidentified video tape. Snicker. Apparently we recorded it in 'not sucky' mode (I never remember whether that's EP or LP or SP or whatever), because it's the only thing on the tape, and the recording is in good shape. That's Manos for you--enough of an MST3K classic that one tape of said movie just isn't enough!

+/-4: [livejournal.com profile] solarbird and I lamed out of going out to see some live music over at the Lake Forest Park Town Centre this evening with a couple local friends, but I did at least get all my bills paid. If I'm going to be socially lame, at least I can get stuff done around the house.

And laundry. Rah. Having to break out my jeans now that the weather is actually turning colder, all two pairs that actually fit me. ;P But, as previously mentioned, I'm not much for retail therapy--so I'm almost less likely to actually make myself un-lame and buy jeans as I am to make myself remember to do exercise so I can fit into the jeans I've got!

-5: I have estimated that my iPod seems to be able to cough up about three hours' worth of battery life these days, and I can apparently squeeze out another 15-20 minutes if I futz with it a while--though this seems to be mostly in increments of a few seconds as I keep trying to warm the device up, hitting the Play button, and seeing what happens. I shall have to see if having just enough battery power to get me to and from work and some random opportunities for music while AT work shall suffice me for a while, or whether it will annoy me enough to actually send off to Apple for a new battery.

So far the annoyance is not very high, though. It lets me make it all the way through my Great Big Sea Favorites playlist plus extra stuff on a daily basis, and right now, that's about all I need out of a musical device!

-6: Time to get new meds for the cat. Oh joy, oh glee! She's running out of the thyroid goop I have to put on her food, which means I need to unlame and call the vet. Note to self: CALL THE VET.

And I have to go get more cat food, too. And kitty treats. I mean, geez, what is she, my PET or something? ;)

+/-7: Now that Ynderra has actually reached the Palace on Two Moons, have kind of handed off Doreel to other sources of RP. A small portion of me is a bit disappointed by this--the part that's going, "But I ought to be RPing!"

However, it's being sternly overridden by the rest of me, which is determined to get as far along on Lament of the Dove by the end of the year as possible. Plus, I still need to finish off the edits for the third draft of Faerie Blood, in the event that Tor tells me "not interested". I think I may be finding myself tempted by the prospect of trying Daw next rather than Baen, but we'll see what happens when the time comes. Like Baen, Daw wants the whole manuscript--so regardless, I will have to have a complete third draft of the book ready to send off to them.

+8: And lest I forget, I actually picked up both my favorite instruments again this week. Both the guitar and the bouzouki were in major need of tuning, and my fingers have gotten un-accustomed to the zouk's metal strings! Grf. This tells me I really need to play more often. How the heck am I going to be able to play Great Big Sea bridges with a proper Doyle-esque flare if I do not practice?

Happily, however, I have not at least intellectually forgotten the fingering for "Salmon Tails Up the Water", which is the bridge of "Jolly Butcher". I say intellectually, because I have yet to actually convince my fingers to go where I want them to go throughout the entire bit. What I really want is to be able to play it by hitting the proper strings plus a drone on one side or the other to round out the tone and take advantage of the fact that I am playing a multi-stringed instrument--but I can barely pluck out the entire melody with single-string strikes, much less double-stringed ones.

Do any of the musicians on my Friends list know if there is an actual term for what I'm trying to do with this?

No, it was the MST3K version. It's just darn near unwatchable, even with JoelAndTheBots' help. :-)
