Anybody able to help out [livejournal.com profile] brightbeak with a hardware issue? She installed SP2 on her Windows box and suddenly can't see her D: drive. I've poked around a bit on Google as well as Microsoft's own support site, but I'm coming up dry; this is what I get for being more of a software geek than a hardware geek.

Her post about the problem and details thereof is here. Go give her a hand if you can!

I've sent mail to my dad and step-mom, to see if either of them will give me an answer other than 'get a Mac'.

Which is why I did not want to simply say that.

i'm || this close to take it to the computer docs the first DRY day we get (currently we're getting rain, rain, more rain, and oh yeah, RAIN)...

and i've HAVE been considering a mac for a long time, it's just for the even longer time, hubby & i shared this computer, and his job requires him to use certain software (as he teaches it) and it's on the MS platform there... :P

Heh. Yeah, that's a difficulty. The Mac can run most PC software now, though, I believe. You might look into that. And those bits which it can't run will generally have a Mac analog that can create PC-readable versions of the file.

msoffice for mac's don't play nicely w/ autocad/autodesk products (the vba components are umm.. FUBAR!) and those two products are among the ones that hubby has to integrate in his teaching (plus he uses camtasia, demo-ing various tasks) and if it's NOT ****EXACTLY**** the same, his students are clueless knobs & can't make the leap

i dunnow hat they're teaching in high school these days, but folks just ain't got the sense that god gave a fleabite... i think the reliance on calculators has gotten to the point, you could castrate a guy b/f he'd give up his calculator (and that's just going too far on the reliance thing, ya know??)

as for running autodesk in a virtualpc shell, i'm honestly NOT sure if it would play nicely once he took the files back to the MS environment (we've already HAD autodesk/autocad issues b/w variants of windows, add mac to the mix, and ummmm... OY!)

*cringe*whimper*

Yeah, that fails to suprise me. Windows is such xenophobic software. And MacOS is like... the friendly neighbor who shows up at the door with a casserole while the moving truck's still in the driveway. Heh.

mac's are shockingly easy to deal w/ compared w/ pc's & ms stuff!
on my SECOND DAY using os8.6 i helped someone debug her installation of it. as in, my second day using a mac in over 10 years, and i was already lightyears ahead of this poor soul, but it was SO EASY!!!!!!!!!!!!
i'd not be as comfy editing some of the system files as i am w/ tweaking win's system files (i've kinda gotten good at reg-edit), but i'm sure w/ a bit of exposure (like more than a month or so) i'd be up to speed!
and some things are so shocking easy on a mac, that well, going back to a pc was umm.. hate-inducing!
the only thing i missed was my right-click (i LIVE on rightclick) tho i did find out how to do just about everything i needed to w/ click-hold :)

Heh. Yeah. And my step-mother's Mac, I'm pretty sure, has right-click capabilities. Since she has a two-button mouse and all.

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :)
that, and now that Opera is out in version 7.54 for macs, i'd be in heaven! :) :)
i can do things in opera that i can't do w/ other browsers (or can't do as well) and certainly can open a LOT more tabs than any MS product would let me (yeah, i was at 178 the other day, 91 last week, tho today i'm running just under 75 open tabs - power surf :))
this has really helped me make the decision that my next beastie (likely a laptop) WILL be a mac! there's too many advantages!!!!!! :)

Yup! In terms of innovation and compatibility and function and stuff, MacOS is rapidly overtaking Windows.
