According to posts by catrysa, who is quoting the the Weather Channel, Ivan is coming back to smack Texas and Louisianna as a tropical storm. I am flabbergasted. That is one HELL of a determined storm! If I weren't a heathen, and I were a Southerner, I'd be wondering what the hell my states did to piss off the Powers That Be!

you had to THINK about "winter rain on ice"??????
i thought that one would be so ingrained into your psyche that it would be the most evocative of the lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's the thing--ice doesn't actually happen that often in Seattle, at least not in the city proper. Plenty of winter rain, sure. But ice is a sporadic occurrence! So it's not all that emblazoned into my brain. I have plenty of the smell of cold-damp-on-leaf-mush, though!

*I* had to think a minute on that one, and EWWWWWWWW, that's not exactly a 'welcome-y' type smell! and i thought seattle got more ice than that... oooops!
we've got "autumn rain on already mushed leaves" for today's menu here... and yuck! prefer "snow" smell muchly!

Usually, we have a short stretch right around the turn of the year when it gets cold enough for there to be ice. A few weeks either at the tail end of December or early January, pretty much. Right about then is when we tend to have the one (1) snowfall of the winter. There have been exceptions to this pattern since I've lived out here, but by and large that's pretty much how the winter weather behaves around here.

Aside from that it's a lot of gray, gray, gray, and a lot of rainy, rainy, rainy, hovering in temperature right around the freezing point but never really getting colder than that. So it's that sort of pervasive cold that soaks into your bones, and you don't get the benefit of having snow to make up for it! Sigh. :) If we want snow, we have to go into the surrounding mountains.

But I am too lame for that, mostly. :)

i find the cold doesn't sink into my bones to the same extent when there is snow on the ground... must be my weird body, well maybe.. who knows...
but not having enough snow to justify the cold would make me MOVE somewhere that DID! and sounds like seattle & environs don't get enough to satify the snow-hound in me!

Nope, if you're a true snow-hound, Seattle wouldn't cut it. :)

But I get what you mean about the cold not being so intense if there's actual snow--I'm the same way, actually. There's something different about the cold of a day where there's snow on the ground, and the cold of a day where you're getting freezing rain.
