Non-writing stuff in the life of the Anna
Jul. 10th, 2004 04:57 pm+1. Went to do the Ave this afternoon with
mamishka, which I hadn't done in a while, and it was pleasant indeed. We had lunch at the Wing Dome, and went to the comic store, and went to the bookstore (and I bought the fourth Ben Reese mystery by Patricia Wright). And we found the nice lady who works at the Soap Box has broken her arm, which prompted a visit into there. After that, it was down to Cellophane Square where Meems bought a few disks; I got one myself by a group called Anam, who I have not heard before but who attracted me on the grounds of 1) I like the name, as it is the Irish word for 'heart' as I recall, and 2) they have a bouzouki player, and 3) lots of jigs and reels. So right up my alley!
+2: Last night Meems and I got caught up on episodes of The Dead Zone, which was fun! Especially since it's the only show I'm keeping up with these days.
+/-3: Had to take Polly back to the vet yesterday afternoon, and while this was supposed to be a good thing--a free followup check on her teeth as well as another blood draw to test whether the thyroid medicine I've been giving her is effective--boy howdy was Polly NOT PLEASED about this. She made her displeasure known in particularly pungent fashions in her kitty carrier on the way in, and it took two vet techs to get her out of the thing once we were there. She did a lot of hissing and slashing out with her paws--or, well, sort of doing the right motion even if her front paws don't have any weaponry. She barely put up with me skitching her head when she huddled behind the cabinet. And when Jason the vet tech tried to give me the towel he'd sprayed with pheremone spray, so they could wrap her up and try to get her immobilized for the blood draw, she was having NONE OF THAT. She started growling at me, and at that point they asked me to go ahead and leave--since, as the doctor said, "if you get bitten it's our liability". So I retreated to the lobby, but I could hear Polly yowling from all the way out there.
They did at least get the blood drawn, and that was good--the vet called me back this afternoon in fact to tell me that the medicine had helped her, though I need to be more diligent about giving her the right dosages because right now I'm only remembering to do it once a day and she needs it twice. So!
+4: Thursday night was
solarbird and I heading over to the Varsity to catch the last night of showings of the original Japanese release of Godzilla, which was also fun even though I had not quite grasped exactly how grim a film that actually is with all of the footage of Tokyo in a sea of flames, all the people crammed into the hospitals with radiation sickness, and Godzilla actually frying people with his Radioactive Flaming Halitosis Fu. At the same time I was amused to see the requisite scientist who is distressed because the Invaluable Research Opportunity Involved With Giant Monsters is being needlessly squandered--even as I was thinking, "So exactly how ARE you going to research a 150-foot tall, pissed off, radioactive lizard, anyway?"
+5: Dara and I went back to the house in Kenmore on Thursday afternoon to do the inspection part of the house buying process. We were met by our agent Tami and a guy named Gary from World Inspection Network. The whole process was fairly straightforward and painless. Two weirdly amusing things happened, with the first being how another agent showed up with clients while we were there--and he'd inadvertantly brought them to the wrong house. Whoops! The second was discovering that the crawlspace, being kind of wedged in under the house where it is set hard into the hill, is this strange sloping sort of area that you get to via a sort of hatch in the wall of one of the downstairs rooms. The sloping floor is partially--but not entirely--covered by plastic, and the current owners are using the space for random storage. They had lots of empty cardboard boxes thrown in there in haphazard piles.
+6: Spiderman 2 on Wednesday with Meems, Dara,
spazzkat,
risu, and
lyricae, and that was a decent amount of fun. Our viewing was at the Cinerama, which made for some nice loud splody fun. Definitely groovy villain with Doctor Octopus. I also really liked a couple of the points in the movie where normal, everyday folks get to react to Spiderman, though there were other parts with his Aunt May that we all found a bit shaky. Still, a fun movie.
+7: Two current reads at the moment--though one of them is really a re-read. The new read is With Child by Laurie King; the re-read is Season of Storms by Susanna Kearsley.
+8: Been beating my Inbox down to size lately, trying to weed out a whole lot of backlog that's built up for the past many months--clear back to when I broke my arm. I've put a sizeable dent in it and am almost down to sixty messages. I've also gotten a lot of logs posted to the Two Moons page as a result; still putting in an amusing amount of effort on the web site for a game I'm not even really playing on anymore. But well hey.
