Does anyone on my Friends list familiar with Newfoundland music ([livejournal.com profile] scrunchions, [livejournal.com profile] framlingem, [livejournal.com profile] gerimaple, [livejournal.com profile] brightbeak, [livejournal.com profile] divagypsy, [livejournal.com profile] avalonmissy, I'm looking in your all's directions) know of a band called the Streels? Apparently they are Newfoundland ex-pats based in Vancouver, and they're playing at Folklife today at 1pm. I'll miss them as I am at work, but I'm interested in checking out more Newfoundland bands. :)

(I was alerted to them by [livejournal.com profile] veiledpanda, who informs me that she thinks of me now whenever she sees the word 'Newfoundland'. Hee!)

My friend Dave in St. Johns recommends Tickle Harbour - trad folk. - and Figgy Duff who are "the band that started the folk-rock revival in NL" according to him.

He also mentioned GBS. I pointed out this was unnecessary. :)

I don't think I've heard any bands from Newfoundland, but the link is definitely an interesting one. I know thise group is from a totally different country, but the Pogues are great, even for Irish folk music. Got a lively beat. Don't worry, its not the genre I'm into. All but rap are on my good list.

Sounded off, I know. Didn't mean for it. Irish folk is awesome, and the beat very contagious. Sound like a music major. *grin* The Pogues are among my favorites for this genre, with the Corrs a very close second. I've a few MP3s from both, and in search of more for my collection. Redneck country is not a place to find good follk music. Driving the neighbors mad with bagpipe music when they blare their rap is way too much fun to do. *evil grin*

With that singular exception, there's little I won't listen to. Finding it is usually the problem.

I'd love to listen to them if I can find their CDs here in Arkansas.

On that note, if you locate a link where they might have snippets or even a full MP3to sample their music, send it my way. Any fan thatis this into them can't be too far off the mark in my opinion. *wink*

I don't know them but as far as trad and Newfoundland music I reccomend: The Navigators, The Irish Descendants, The punters, A Crowd of Bold Sharemen, Ryan's Fancy (if you are able to find anything since the band no longer exist) as for other then trad like Avalonmissy I will suggest Brothers in Stereo and Barry Canning.

Other trad bad that is not from Newfoundland and that I highly reccomend: The American Wake, Celtae and Glengarry Bhoys. If you need links just tell me.
