... but nevertheless, this is an eloquent protest against those who would claim that queer folks are a threat to marriage, when Britney Spears can get married on a whim and annul it 48 hours later.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone, indeed. Nobody, but nobody, but NOBODY has any business denying queer folks the right to marry, but especially not when they do not also condemn straight folks who show no respect for the institution of marriage.

Where is this ardent defense of the sanctity of marriage when so many marriages fall apart every year? Where was it when my straight father went through four marriages? Where was it when my straight mother went through two?

I have to say that I also read an unrelated article that referenced the same thing - a sarcastic observation about how same-sex marriages were dangerous threats to the sanctity of honest marriages 'like the one Britney Spears enjoyed for 48 hours a few weeks ago,' and it made me angrier than ever about the whole situation. How dare anyone DARE use that argument. The very idea that same-sex marriages 'threaten' male-female marriages is ridiculous. It makes my blood boil every time they trot out that tired old refrain. *snarl*

Unfortunately pointing this out to them will be ignored....for the simple reason that she had it annulled. She didn't get divorced.

In the circles condeming same sex marriage annulled means "It never happened" not "it was a bad idea." They won't see the hypocrisy of ignoring her marriage because in the eyes of thier religion she never was married.

sigh (of course that shouldn't keep people from throwing her marriage at them....maybe it will work with some of them)

*nods* I see what you mean and the cynical part of me opines that you are right. However, it certainly doesn't stop with Britney--see previous commentary re: so many marriages in general falling apart every year. I find it bitterly ironic that so much money gets spent on marriage counseling, that wives cheat on their husbands and husbands cheat on their wives, that abuse happens between spouses, that spouses abandon one another when they realize that the person they'd become infatuated with is going to drive them batshit when living with them in close proximity on a daily basis, or that they aren't going to fork over enough income to make them comfy for the rest of their lives...

All this shit happens in marriages, and somehow straight people want to keep it to themselves.

Yeah, I hear you. If a straight couple's marriage is so fragile that a gay couple getting married is going to somehow threaten it, that straight couple has way more problems than whether or not two people of the same gender get to be married.

I still periodically sardonically think the same thing that assorted friends were piping up a while back: "Marriage is in danger? Quick! Everybody run right out and get married as fast as you can!"
