How I Began My 2004: A Theme, By Anna
Jan. 1st, 2004 11:31 pmA summary of my day: Gaelic geeking, cat service, laundry, finances, Russell Crowe's voice as workout motivation, diet Coke with lemon in it, Nethack, TM geeking, and words.
0. I tried a second time to announce myself to the Gaidhlig-B list. My first attempt, asking for translation help, had gone unanswered. But when I posted a very short message with as much Gaelic as I could muster, I got a couple of nice replies. So I took the time to try to compose all-Gaelic answers to them, so let's see if I actually did that correctly. Teach Yourself Gaelic is incredibly badly organized, so I have to flip back and forth a lot through the book to actually look stuff up. It has no index to speak of, and not much of a table of contents either.
But I did, I think, manage to figure out how to say "I don't know him" and "Is that right?" I tried for "I will greatly enjoy learning Gaelic", but I screwed the verb up. A friendly helpful poster gave me tips about that, though.
The other really cool thing though about this interaction is that another poster has alerted me to a PNW-based Gaelic-supporting organization, which sounds really interesting. I may have to check those folks out.
1. Performed an act of service to the cat (ALL HAIL POLLY THE MAGNIFICENT) and cleaned up her little kitty area in the upstairs bathroom. Mmm, the brisk, bracing scent of Pine-sol.
2. Did laundry. Lots of laundry.
3. Paid the mortgage, because I am a fan of having a house.
4. Checkbook balancing, oh joy oh glee!
5. Had another workout today, and let Mr. Crowe sing me through it this time, since I hadn't been working out to music for a while. My numbers are up as a result. Note to Self: working out + beat of 30 Odd Foot of Grunts = good.
6. Diet Coke is suddenly much tastier with a squeeze of lemon juice in it. Rather better than the lemon-flavored diet Coke they're selling now. Credit to
solarbird for the idea.
7. Got distracted from working on Chapter 19 by a treacherous game of Nethack! Which I lost, of course, but well hey. And I valiantly stuck to just the one game.
8. Helped a newbie named Firesinger on TM today; he was interested in Grove Holt, and I explained to him that the tribe had just recently been destroyed and that he might want to chat with the chief-types of Grove to see about setting up his character with taking the destruction of the tribe into account. Also made sure 2004 shows up where it's supposed to now on the TM site, though I haven't yet gotten in any timeline events for the new year.
9. Last, but not least, tonight's word count: 528. This brings Chapter 19 up to 1,677.

Date: 2004-01-02 02:16 am (UTC)I first read that as "garlic geeking" which sounded mighty tasty. Speaking of tasty, a squeeze of lime juice is also a nice addition to diet Coke. So-called "diet Coke with lemon" tastes like Pledge furniture polish cola to me! If I think of it as Pledge, it's interesting, if I think of it as lemon, I'm sorely disappointed every time.

Date: 2004-01-02 09:59 am (UTC)Of course, one can say the same about my knowledge of Gaelic, but I'm working on that part.
Yeah, I've had lime in diet Coke before, I forget where exactly but it was in a restaurant. I remember that it did startle me, because I'm used to having restaurants put lemon wedges in diet Coke when they do something like that. That particular time, it was lime. And I have been kind of liking the commercial lemon diet Coke, enough that I've been disappointed lately when the little store near our house is out of it--but after trying regular diet Coke with lemon in it, I think I'm cured of that little problem. :)
