I was pretty much dead sure I was going to want this soundtrack, and I was right. There is a whole lot of lovely violin and cello work all over it, and a bunch of thundering percussion as well--especially in the tracks representing the battle-flavored parts of the movie. Very little woodwinds, though there are whistles here and there, and I don't think I caught any brass at all. So it's a very strings-heavy and percussion-heavy soundtrack, and that totally works for me, since it helps convey Aubrey as a violinist and Maturin as a cellist. :D

My favorite track so far though is Track 4, "The Cuckold Comes Out of the Amery", an arrangement of a trad ditty that involves a violin, a whistle, and a drum. Since I've been all about the Celtic/folk this track made me sit up and go "OOH!"

The track with the most cello, not surprisingly, is listed as being performed by Yo-Yo Ma. Lovely, lovely work. That cello hit low notes I didn't know could be made on an instrument!

Track 13, "The Battle", is almost entirely percussion. I missed the music during the first viewing of the movie, but am not really surprised by this since we were in the fourth row or thereabouts, and it was kind of hard to pick out the drums when the cannons were booming in our ears. ;D

Some very nice recurring themes, and I caught the one they were playing during the camera shot where Crowe and Bettany turn their instruments around and pluck them like mandolins. *giggle*

Still need to listen to the final track, but on the whole, yum!

And oh yeah, the soft-focus picture of Captain Crowe with violin in his candle-lit cabin on the inside of the album insert doesn't suck, either.
