According to my favorite Russell Crowe fan site, Patrick O'Brien fans (who, quote, "will soon be circling the cinemas like sharks", unquote) are already starting to bitch about Mr. Crowe's weight for the part of Jack Aubrey.

In that he is, in fact, too LIGHT for the role. Since the good Captain is described several times in the books as portly or even fat, fluctuating between 14 and 17 stone.

This may be the first time I've ever heard tell of people bitching that a leading man isn't heavy enough. Me, I think I can cope with this particular exercise of creative license. ;D

On the McAnallys list that I'm on, in the middle of the huge discussion that's been going on about whether Jim Butcher's Dresden Files books are going to be successfully made into a TV show, Mr. Butcher weighed in with his opinion about who ought to play his characters. Most notable in this discussion was that his hero, Harry Dresden, is 6'8", and yet there are a dearth of actors in Hollywood of that height. Mr. Butcher announced that he could care less how tall an actor to play Harry winds up being; what is more important to him is whether the actor can capture the spirit and flavor of the character and play him well.

I'm of the same opinion re: Mr. Crowe and Jack Aubrey. ^_^

They are referencing an article in Empire magazine, which is apparently in the UK; several excerpts from the article are quoted, though they don't have a link off elsewhere to the actual magazine as they sometimes do.
