Jun. 26th, 2003 01:03 pmI must have been anxious about my appointment with the Bone & Joint Center today, because for about half an hour or so before the alarm went off I was having a bunch of disjointed dreams that involved a) oversleeping and missing the appointment, b) going ahead and getting up and getting ready, and c) Mulder and Scully making out on the sheepskin rug by the bed. I am not sure what Mulder and Scully have to do with my broken arm, unless my subconscious is trying to convince me that my bike crash was caused by aliens.
But, I got up on time and even got out of bed by myself, though this involved just sliding out of the bed onto the sheepskin rug (sans Mulder and Scully). And we got to the appointment on time and it went fairly well. I am in a much smaller rig now: I've lost the huge pillow and the splint, and instead I now have this thing the doctor called a 'shinguard'. It is three pieces of slim interlocking molded plastic, velcroed very snugly about my upper arm. They look sort of like bits of stormtrooper armor, and underneath all this is a snug-fitting cotton 'sock' to keep it all from annoying my skin.
solarbird and I made jokes about it.
Me: "I feel like I'm going into battle."
Her: "Are you ready, gladiator?"
Me: "Maximus! Maximus! Maximus!"
Her: "So, they call you Spaniard. Funny, you don't look Spanish!"
Me: "Neither did Russell Crowe! Didn't know they had blue-eyed men in Spain!"
Her (and this last line only makes sense if you've seen the fan-produced MSTing of Highlander II): "A Spanish gladiator -- with an Australian accent!"
ANYWAY, I got to see the x-rays from last week for the first time, which was simultaneously kind of cool and quite disconcerting. The break is very clean and almost right in the middle of my humerus, but my brain kind of went YIP at the sight of my bone snapped in two. The good thing is that the bone bits are well aligned and should heal cleanly.
Both the nurse and the doctor were impressed by the velcroed t-shirt I was wearing. The doctor said we should sell it. Dar is very amused by this.
While said doctor was slipping the sock bit of my new brace on, some conversation happened about what the brace was made of. Dar surmised polystyrene, and embarrassedly then tried to shut up. I told her to keep talking as it was nicely distracting me, and the doctor told me about other plastics used in the body for joints.
Dr. Tittleman was mildly concerned about the radial nerve damage though and asked me to come back in in a couple of weeks for tests. He was very good about explaining to me how they can't really effectively test the nerve yet since it would be difficult to get a decent evaluation; all they could have told today was that the nerve is in abnormal condition, and, well, I knew that already. Whereas in a couple more weeks they should be able to tell if the nerve is actively cut or just bruised or what.
I described for him how my arm did not seem to be shifting about as much the last couple of days and he surmised that my bones might be doing the thing where the ends start sticking together, but he wasn't definitive about it. If that is going on in my arm, though, I'd be about a week ahead of schedule.
I am also to come back on the 1st to have an appointment with one of their physical therapists to try to deal with getting proper circulation going in my arm again, and to flex and stretch the muscles. Things feel all weird and tingly in my lower arm right now, and I definitely have some reduced mobility in my elbow.
But. I do feel a million times better with this new thing on my arm, as
kathrynt predicted I would. Also,
mamishka,
ssha, and
poetry_lady all kept me company yesterday afternoon and evening, Meems up until she had to go to work. On her BIRTHDAY, which blew. However, we did watch UHF and a good bit of the Muppet Show. These were all good. So were the crab rangoons. Bless Mimi and Dawn-Marie and Cyn all for arranging it.
One more good thing: Volt wants me to come in for an interview. TOMORROW. Yeep! I don't dare let myself get too hopeful about it, but it sure would be nice if I could get a job even if I am injured. I must say that Andrea at Volt has been far and away the nicest of the recruiters I have spoken with there.
Wish me luck, folks.

Date: 2003-06-26 01:40 pm (UTC)I wish you lots of luck on the job interview. That would indeed be nifty if you got something now.
You keep up the healing, I'll keep up the healing thoughts.
