Added as a backdated Livejournal entry 5/15/03 -- herein being the trip home

Tuesday, August 29, 1995: The Trip Home, or, Do You Prefer Screaming Baby or No Screaming Baby Seats?

The trip home was reasonably uneventful. We got up to have our last breakfast in the hotel - which was free, although we'd actually checked out first - and afterwards, caught the cab which Dar had reserved the previous night. The driver chatted with us a bit as he drove us to the airport, and helped us get our heavy luggage out as well.

In the airport, we had to wait a bit in the check-in line, but thankfully, that went reasonably quickly. We then hurried to the plane and got boarded without any problems. On the plane, we wound up sitting near other fen, and chatted with them a bit as we got off at Heathrow. We spotted others who were obviously fen going home to the States, as well.

The layover in Heathrow wasn't particularly exciting, but it wasn't particularly bad either. We checked a few duty-free shops to try to find a certain kind of chocolate - Bourneville's - but unfortunately didn't; we did, however, buy a couple of containers of other kinds of chocolate to bring home for the household. And I bought a couple of sets of fragranced travel soaps to send home to my sisters. After getting our money changed, and getting boarding passes and passports checked appropriately, we boarded.

Interestingly, the trip home was longer than the trip there by at least two hours - and it seemed all the longer with the larger number of crying children that were seated in our section of the plane. The food was just as good as the previous flight had been, but the noise from the children made sleeping more difficult, and more than once I wished I'd not packed away my CD player and headphones. To blot out the noise, I listened to more of the TV broadcasts than I had on the way there. This time, we had different films (which I skipped) and different TV shows, including Roger Moore starring in The Saint and an episode of I Love Lucy.

We got in to Seattle around 3:10pm local time, and staggered our way into the airport. Customs, as predicted, was a little more complicated than Scottish Customs had been - there was actually an agent present, and we'd had to write up a list of all the items we purchased overseas, along with their market values. We did not have to pay duties, however, which was assuring. During the process of getting our passports checked and baggage obtained, we chatted with an amenable Russian fellow who was on his way to Spokane... and at last, after turning over our baggage to go through another baggage carousel, we found Paul waiting for us. We took the shuttle back to the main terminal, got our luggage, and were at last on our way home.
