Movie review: Jurassic World

It took a bit for Dara and me to finally see Jurassic World, but we got a chance today as part of a big afternoon birthday party bash for our good friend Mimi! We all gathered downtown for a movie and dinner shindig, and a lovely time was had by all.

Picoreview for the movie in particular: I liked it far better than I was expecting, actually! I was wary after seeing this review over at the Bitchery, as well as Seanan McGuire’s disappointed commentary. Seanan’s in particular had me worried, because she is a devoted fan of the franchise. We’re talking fangirling on the same level I throw at Great Big Sea and Le Vent du Nord here, people, so she knows what she’s talking about.

So I went in with fairly low expectations, prepped to be annoyed by gender portrayals but wowed by the nonstop RAAAR! And actually, I found myself only mildly vexed by the gender portrayals, so I count that in the win column.

And really, let’s get real: the primary reason I wanted to see this movie was this guy right here.

Owen Means Business

Although that said, Jurassic Park is only a little bit behind Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Raiders of the Lost Ark when it comes to formative movies of my adolescence. And it certainly ranks up very high on the list of my favorite John Williams soundtracks. So I have a pretty hefty fondness for the original movie, and that was pulling me into the theater to see this one, too.

And in the meantime, heads up: the spoilers are HIDING BEHIND THE FOLD and they are totally tracking you.

That line to Claire from her sister about 'when' she has kids was the single most annoying thing in the film. And if the sister was handing over care of her sons to an aunt who hadn't seen them in years, she might have thought to provide some useful instructions, such as, 'Make sure Gray's in bed by 9pm, don't let him fool you that we let him stay up later watching TV, because he will try it on.'

Pretty much everything about Claire's sister got up my nose, in fact, so I'm glad she was only in the film for about five minutes total!

I generally agree with everything in your review, though I didn't care either way about the assistant - she never became a real person, she was just a plot device.

I didn't recognise Fisk - the hair makes such a difference! But he obviously changed his voice too, not so dark and dramatic in his speech.

Yeah, if I'd been filming that scene with Claire's sister being all WHEN you have kids, I wouldn't have even needed to change the dialogue--I would have just shot Claire going "yeah yeah yeah" on the phone while panning down to her scribbling a reminder to herself: "Do not argue with sister that I DO NOT WANT CHILDREN she won't listen". Or something like that.

Dara did point out to me quite correctly though that you can read a lot of Claire's sister being annoying as "I'm freaking out because I'm going through a divorce". And yeah, valid. But yeah, you'd have thought that she'd at least have shot Claire a wee bit more data to work with on how to deal with the boys!

And yep, d'Onofrio looked TOTALLY different with hair, and he sounded so different as well. Dude _can_, indeed, act. :D

All that line really needed was an eye roll from Claire, and if I'd been directing, it would definitely have been in there!

Good point about the sister and the divorce. Though you would think that makes her less qualified to tell her sister how to live her life, not more lol.

Yeah, though as Dara pointed out, it's totally plausible for somebody in that situation to be emotionally needy and demanding, so!

An eye roll from Claire would have been good. That is now totally what she's doing in my headcanon version of this movie!
