Tri-lingual Hobbit re-read: Chapter 14

Fell behind on this again due to being in MASSIVE DEADLINE mode with Vengeance of the Hunter–for the past several months. But now that Vengeance is signed off on text-wise, and with the coming of The Desolation of the Smaug VERY NIGH, I feel a mighty need to return to this project.

So let’s get cracking with Chapter 14, shall we? Esgaroth has a pissed-off dragon to contend with, after all!

How horrible is it to "cross-comment"? :)

German "willen" is almost cognate to English "will" (as a verb) and German "sollen" is almost cognate with English "shall". So "oder ich will en Narr sein" is almost "or I will be a clown/jester/fool", but I would translate the "will be" to "am", were I translating it, because idioms and all.

There's a somewhat cool translation of The Hobbit to Swedish with illustrations by Tove Jansson (of Mumintroll fame/obscurity). I don't recall who did the translation, though.

"Willen" is an actual German verb? I thought the "ich will" here was a conjugation of "wollen"...?

Woo, the Swedish translation sounds neat. I have a bit of a goal to collect Hobbit translations in all the languages I'm interested in eventually trying to learn. ^_^

It may be "wollen" (I think, at this point, my actual "having studied German" is a whopping 28 years ago). I stil lmanage to vaguely converse in it, since it, well, is basically a Germanic language, like most of the languages I vaguely understand.

Tove Jansson even had Seattle connections, that's where her partner was born.
